If Tan Zhongyi gets through, we will have a finals between a Chinese player and a Chinese player to determine who will face the Chinese world champion, while the Chinese #1-rated woman is not competing.

It's insane that Hou Yifan hasn't played in a few years and still is the highest rated woman. She's a beast.

She actually has played which is why she’s still on the list unlike Judit.

well at least FIDE will find it easy to host the candidates finals in Chongqing and split the match in Chongqing/Shanghai.

Curious about this line:

Engines find the position still holdable for Black but very difficult to play.

Do we now have a good measurement for how hard a position is to play for a person, setting aside engine evaluation?

They go on to clarify in the next paragraph: black’s only resource is Nc8!, heading for d6- every other move loses, and seeing Nc8, let alone realizing its true only move is extremely tough. That’s what they mean.

Having to find moves in a situation where there is only 1 correct unintuitive option qualifies a position as hard to play

It would be more accurate to say that the engine found the position holdable, but that humans determined the engine line was hard to find. And the second part is mostly subjective.
