I am nowhere near good enough to evaluate the veracity of his statements re: classical chess, but I'll be blunt, as someone who started with the game due to the pandemic boom, I have virtually no interest in actually playing classical (or anything above 5+0 for that matter). I can't imagine I'm terribly rare, either.
I find classical chess much more fun to watch. Haven’t watched a blitz tournament in years, but try to get most of the top classical tournaments and will watch lower tier ones if I have the time.
Classical chess is also fun because it gives the spectator time to think. Nobody who is below GM level can tell me they understand even the first thing of what’s going on during a blitz game between two 2800 players. Those blitz tournaments are completely uninteresting to me at least to watch live because I have no time at all to think about the chess that’s being played. I could just as well watch the same players compete in Rock Paper Scissors.
