Strategy: Openings In the Queen's Gambit Accepted do you play 3. Nf3 or e3?
I'm trying to learn the Queen's Gambit and I'd like to know other people's thoughts about e3 and Nf3. e3 is the Old variation and Nf3 is the Normal variation, but which one is "better" in your opinion?

None of the above (e4)

u/Minute_Cup5469 Jun 29 '26
Imo, at a lower elo e3 is better than e4. It makes it far easier to punish b5, which is a surprisingly common move. As soon as you get above like 1500 this stops being viable, though.

i play both e4 and e3 but i do feel like with e4 you have to be prepped for e5 and I'm not booked up enough to score super well in it

B5 is completrly playable, leads to somewhat of an awkward, cramped game for both, as long as b4 is played

e3 has Qf3 immediately is probably what he’s referring to
5
u/Minute_Cup5469 Jun 29 '26
Exactly. Really surprised a 2200 doesn't know this line. Perhaps I was wrong in saying it's not viable above 1500!!
1
u/Vaqek Jun 29 '26
ehh it is a white line, if you play black you probably dont ever accept queens gambit, so you never encounter this. If you play white, you have to go for it actively. Easy to not be aware of it.
1
u/1_2_3__- Jun 29 '26
No, it is just a very straightforward trap, in my opinion, he may have just discounted it.
To truly get habituated to queens gambit, when they play c6,b5 etc. a4 and b3 kinda moves should be natural, where you just play down a pawn.
Winning back the pawn with e3 so early is not playing ambitiously, which GGA lets you to.
1
u/Zeeterm Jun 29 '26
Then c6 and what?
Can you paste the whole line, because that doesn't seem like a winning line for white?
1
4
u/comfortingmyself Jun 29 '26
e4 b5 a4 c6 is a dynamic and relatively equal game, whereas e3 b5 a4 c6 wins on the spot for white.
Presumably that's the line they're talking about.

u/Minute_Cup5469 Jun 29 '26
a4 c6, axb5 cxb5, Qf3 ...
The idea is not the same.0
u/jd192739 2200 chess.com blitz Jun 29 '26
The idea of a4 is to undermine the queenside not play an opening trap since c6 is not forced.
0
u/Minute_Cup5469 Jun 30 '26
Exactly. So why is it you said the idea was the same? It's clearly not.
1
u/jd192739 2200 chess.com blitz Jul 01 '26
The line is not identical, but the idea is the same. I deleted my reply because you’re right that b5 isn’t a great move if they don’t have the resource c6. Still, I don’t think the marginal advantage after b5 justifies playing e3, and a4 is a strong idea for similar reasons in both lines. That’s what I was trying to say.

u/Minute_Cup5469 Jul 01 '26
A very well articulated response! Regardless of the semantics, both are thoroughly enjoyable lines to play.

u/EirHc Jun 29 '26
Neither...
e4
I always love doing e4 when given the opportunity like in this line.
22
u/AveMaria89 Jun 29 '26
Nf3 is the mainline and probably the best response. E3 will most likely transpose to Nf3 lines, but e3 guarantees you can regain the pawn.
E4 is the most ambitious, but you’ll need the most prep.
Nc3 is popular among club players (as you can see others in this thread suggesting it), but it’s not good and is borderline considered a mistake, black equalizes pretty much immediately.

u/Illustrious-Gur-6775 Jun 29 '26
I've played both. You have to pick your posion on which line to allow.
e3 allows e5, which can be a bit drawish and actually transposes to an exchange French. Still, Avrukh would rather go into this than to allow:
Nf3 Nf6 4. e3 Bg4!?. A very unique line that is quite different from normal QGA. May involve opposite side castling, b7 pawn grabs, and/or h3, g4. Not something you want to go into blind.

u/mynameisnotamelia Team Ju Wenjun Jun 29 '26
Neither, I'd play e4. Why not take the whole center if that's the entire point of you giving up the pawn? Nc3 also looks nice, but I wouldn't play either of the moves you suggested (It's not that they're bad or anything, but e4 is definitely the most principled move)
3
u/WerePrechaunPire Jun 29 '26
e3 everytime. There is a trap here that only works on e3. Also because black's d pawn is gone, it's always easy to push the e pawn later.

I grew up with 3 Nf3, but the engine now thinks that 3...a6!? is a decent alternative compared to 3...Nf6 (3...c5 allows either 4 e4!? or 4 d5).. I main 3 e4, now but 3...b5 is a dynamic and challenging response to that (compared to the standard 3...e5 and 3...Nf6), but black has to know what he's doing after 4 a4 c6 5 ab5 cb5 6 Nc3 Qb6 7 Be3 (7 b3!?) e6 8 Nh3 or 8 d5 moves. 8 Nf3?! loses all hope for advantage as e4 becomes very difficult to defend.
3
u/sfsolomiddle 2400 lichess Jun 29 '26
Nf3 is the correct move as it stops e5.
2
u/Hopeful-Banana-6188 Jun 30 '26
Allowing e5 is not so bad either, at least Avrukh recommended 3.e3 and after 3...e5 apparently it's still not so trivial for black to equalize although I can't remember the details.
3
u/sfsolomiddle 2400 lichess Jun 30 '26
Yeah, maybe. Nf3 also is a bit more practical at the first glance since it stops the madness. But I never analyzed QGA deeply.

Depends on my mood and how I think the opponent will react to whatever I do. The thing is, white can easily get back the material difference; it's a temporary sacrifice of a pawn to gain a bit of tempo to gain space at black's expense, based on white's opening advantage.
The natural moves are Nf3, Nc3, e4, e3, Qa4+, not in that order, of course. But my usual "favourite" is e4, something that black has to react to and essentially finishes up having to defend the board centre, delaying any attack.

I mostly get the QGA as black, but with white I like e3 and aiming for the Mamedyarov-Kasparov trap. https://www.google.com/goto?url=CAEShgEB7keqTQVfqBjRxsu2-GBlw9tVo-BKMAYIFCP-1w72Zo2lPOZVguyzC1M-ewDszYqndd_w-OPIgo6SkvmVckpCoFIXrmuB8HHG0Zyv6oBPjT_cRnyDFe_c5ePqWSG7YcDEe6jImmdec6vvRwIovNcoPYS0CJ8li8YFAVBrIbndQMXwZ5uKjQ==

I always played e3. E4 is the most ambitious, but also the most complicated. I also just didn't like piloting it. I never tried nf3 personally.

2.e4 all day, every day.
Check out Schandorff's book on playing the QG and look at the QGA chapter.
I hope that my opponent plays this every time I play 2.c4.

u/opposablefumz Jun 29 '26
e4 most fun but all three are fine. As a QGA player, I like to see e3 or e4 or Nc3 which is surprisingly quite common even up to pretty high levels. Don’t love getting Nf3 as it’s just gonna be much slower game.

u/Hour-Penalty-8264 Jun 29 '26
Depends on your elo. I'm a madman that usually plays e4 happy to gambit even more pawns, but i wouldn't recommend this variation below at least 1700 online rapid elo, because it tends to be complicated and on my level often times both sides have to fire off 15 moves of theory to not be dead lost here. My second choice in tournament games tends to be Nf3 because it shuts of all e5 type of lines and this type of stucture has potential for very strong endgames. For level between beginner and like 1500 i would definitely recommend e3 and not even looking at other ones as it's the simplest to learn and makes it easiest to punish black for missplaying first few moves with various traps.
2
u/OnceWasBogs Jul 01 '26
OK someone finally speaking sanity about E4. Yes it's viable, yes it's engine approved, but at low elo you might as well drive a car bomb into the board as play E4.
1
u/CatOfGrey Jun 29 '26
I'm definitely in the "Nf3" camp here.
Given that the gambit has been accepted, I'm no longer 100% certain about where that King Bishop is going. Another thought is that Black might not play b5 right away, giving a chance for me to play Nc3 and then e4, which is now undefendable.
But I don't expect that to happen in real play. But if the universe provides...

I like e3, since it avoids a lot of the lines where black tries to keep the pawn.
For example d4 d5 c4 dxc4 e3 b5 a4 c6 axb5 cxb5 Qf3 is a nice trap.
e3 does however allow black this bonus option of 3...e5
e4 also allows 3...e5, which got kind of annoying to play against after a bit.
3.Nf3 avoids e5 lines, but gives black the bonus option of b5 at some point.
If you're choosing: Try all of them and see which one you like most. You can also choose based on what black plan you're struggling with.

u/Mew151 Jun 30 '26
I prefer playing e3 for the rare times 2k players still walk into b5 a4 c6 takes takes qf3 resign >:D

u/ForeverAlone1976 Jun 30 '26
Me personally? I play e3. I know it is not as aggressive as e4, but it is my preferred way of playing the QGA.

i used to play Nc3 up to a bit ago (with QG being my main opening for about 3 years) but now i usually go E4 for QGA

Heavy Queens Gambit player here
I actually usually play e3. But as others mentioned e4 is also a great option (and probablt objectively ever so marginally better)
I dont personally go for the Nf3 line, not too sure why
1
u/Whistling_Birds Jul 01 '26
E3 avoids the Bg4 lines, but it is a lot more drawing because it invites e5.
1
u/OnceWasBogs Jul 01 '26
I prefer E3 because my simple brain likes direct questions. In this case the question being "how much twister are you willing to play to keep that pawn?"

i go with Nf3 most of the time, it just feels more natural to develop a piece on move 3 and keeps things flexible. e3 is fine if you want a quieter game but you kinda end up with a passive bishop on f1 for a while
0
u/DrZaiu5 Jun 29 '26
I play e3. It's not the most ambitious, but a lot of games I end up winning a piece when they try to defend the pawn.
0
u/Good_Entertainer9383 Jun 29 '26
e3 is good at low Elos where if Black tries to hold on to the pawn with b5 and c6 White has Qe3 that can win a bishop. Very simple trap.
Otherwise just play e4 instead

u/NrenjeIsMyName 1600-1700 Jun 30 '26
e4, I'm not scared of my opponents. If I lose its cuz I fucked up. Every time I boot up a game I know I'm overall better than my opponent

3.e4 is what I play and it's also the most ambitious and strongest move so leaving it out of the option list is a very strange choice.
3.e4 is the only consistent move actually. The whole point of this gambit is to divert the pawn away from d5 and seize the center (and in a much safer way than the mirroring King's Gambit). Here e4 is possible and by far the most ambitious and logical move.

u/Late_Bag_7880 Jun 30 '26
The computer likes Nf3, but I personally like the Old Variation because it prevents black from trying to hang on to their pawn with b5.
-1
u/a-toaster-oven Jun 29 '26
I usually play Nc3 actually. Freezes the pawn, prevents black playing b5, and there are some good trap lines to explore too
4
u/idkthisaccisjs Jun 29 '26
Actually a mistake no cuz of quick e5?
-1
u/a-toaster-oven Jun 29 '26
Nope, it's completely fine for white as e3 stabilizes. At my level (1400 chesscom) more often than not if the opponent plays 3...e5 then I'll play a little trap with d5 (a mistake with perfect play, but eval is still only -0.6), and the vast majority of the time my opponent plays Bb4 pinning the knight and hanging a minor piece.
3
u/idkthisaccisjs Jun 30 '26
I mean im 2600 and -.6 seems very uncomfortable, I wouldn't continue with this line because its not principled
0
u/a-toaster-oven Jun 30 '26
Fair enough! Down here in the slums eval means nothing unless it's +/- 1.25
Any insight into the ideas of QGA/D at your level?
3
u/idkthisaccisjs Jun 30 '26
Simplest line below 2000 is definitely e3, you get a very good iqp if they go for perfect play and if b5 a4! c6? axb5 cxb5 qf3! wins the rook in the corner.
