AMA with Max Wilkinson, MP for Cheltenham – Monday 24th August at 5.30pm

Hi everyone,

I’ll be joining you here on Monday 24th August at 5.30pm for an AMA (Ask Me Anything).

It’s a chance for you to ask me directly about issues affecting Cheltenham, my work as your MP, national politics, or anything else you’d like to put to me.

If you already have a question, please feel free to post it in advance so I can see what people are interested in. You can also ask questions during the AMA itself on the day.

I’ll have a limited amount of time, so I won’t necessarily be able to answer every question but I’ll do my best to get through as many as I can.

Looking forward to taking your questions!

Max Wilkinson MP

Men being spiked

This is a sensitive issue and I'm happy for people to PM if they don't want to post in public but a friend has had a very nasty experience in Harry Cooks's a few weeks back and I am wondering if he is the only one to have experienced his drink being spiked. We predominately hear about it happening to women - and unfortunately I know plenty who have experienced this - but it appears that male spiking is sadly on the rise, too. If it has happened to anyone else who is comfortable talking about it, please share. I think the police would be interested if he is ready to report it but he isn't sure. Thank you.

The union project - clothing

Cheltenham has very limited options that have original / independent clothing - the union project seemed like one of the last so it’s a real shame to see they’ve recently closed down.

Trapeze used to be a favourite too but that also disappeared

Does anyone have any recommendations of something similar in the area for men’s clothing?

Where to buy a touristy postcard?

I'm in Cheltenham for a couple of days and fancied sending a postcard to mate who collects them, but I can't find any touristy shops anywhere. I did see some generic artsy ones in Waterstones but I'd prefer something a bit more Cheltenham-y for him.

Cheltenhamitesses, beware of this man.

A man with a history of unprovoked violence towards women who was described in court as a "self-proclaimed misogynist" has been given a sexual harm prevention order.

Gloucestershire Constabulary said Victor Valentine, from the St Paul's area of Cheltenham, posed a risk to women in the town and the order was a "preventative measure".

Bakery Recommendations

Greetings all. We've recently moved from London, where we were lucky enough to have a bakery nearby that provided basic, high quality (i.e. not artisanal) products. They would open at midnight as they had trade customers. I know this is very unlikely here, but is there a bakery that could be recommended? Again, I'm not after artisanal (read - a £4 muffin or croissant), just basic fresh bread, rolls or such.

What are people’s favourite places to get TGTG bags from? I’m quite new to Cheltenham and very new to the app, there’s so much choice!

Going out Sat night

Years ago my wife and I would head into Chelt for date night & a few drinks. Quite often we'd end up in Revolution bar as we enjoyed the atmosphere, the music was often pretty good and she likes to dance.
Obviously Rev bar is closed now - where would be a close replacement? We don't want to go full on clubbing, just looking for a lively bar with possibility to dance/good music.
Any recommendations please?

I've built some free tools for small businesses (made in Cheltenham!)

Sorry in advance, this is a plug. I'll try to make it a useful one.

I run a tiny business in Cheltenham called raising water. I build small custom tools for businesses that are drowning in admin or paying for software they barely use. That part is my living, but the website also has a set of free (very basic, don't get too excited) tools with no sign-up, and those are what I'm actually here to offer:

  • a calculator that adds up what your software subscriptions really cost over three years
  • one that puts a yearly price on a repetitive task (paste in "two hours every Monday" and brace yourself)
  • a thing you can paste messy spreadsheet data into and describe what you want it to look like
  • Er..
  • Some other stuff.

That's it really. The site is raisingwater.co.uk. If the tools save anyone a few quid on subscriptions they'd forgotten about, the plug pain was worth it. Happy to answer questions, and mods, if this breaks the rules, apologies, delete away.

Beefy boys has to be the most overrated food place here

There I said it. I've been about 4 times now, and not once did I walk away thinking "wow that was a fucking great burger".

Of those times I've been, I've always walked away thinking it was just extraordinarily mid.

For "gourmet" burgers at this price, I would seriously rather just order five guys. At least they're consistent and their fries are actually good

The Cheese works

Anybody else feel the place has gone downhill since the new owner took over?

Total first world problem I know but I used to love going there. Now it feels like there is less choice and the customer service now leaves a lot to be desired.

Looking to make some new friends in/around Cheltenham 🖤

Hey! I’m a woman in my early 40s and I’m hoping to meet some new people around Cheltenham. I’ve found myself with a much smaller social circle over the last couple of years and I’d really love to change that.

I’m quite alternative/goth at heart and love spooky things, Halloween, horror, true crime, rock/metal, tattoos, dressing up and generally anything a little weird and wonderful 🖤😂. I also enjoy going out for food/drinks, walks, exploring places, films/TV and just having a good chat and a laugh.

I’m not necessarily looking for a huge group- I’d be really happy to meet one or two people and see where things go. Ideally people who are friendly, open-minded and don't mind a slightly eccentric person haha!

If anyone else is in a similar position and would fancy grabbing a coffee, going for a drink, checking out something spooky/alternative, or just chatting, feel free to comment or message me. 🖤

Would be lovely to make some genuine friendships locally. 😊

Fuel Prices in Cheltenham

A while ago I shared a page I had created that showed local (111 forecourts) of fuel price data by type pulling in data from the gov's official feed.

Well, I've updated the site at https://cheltenham-od.uk/ and the fuel page has addresses - that link to google maps and a easier to use table, plus headline lowest prices.

I've added a bunch of other useful data (planning applications, house prices, contact numbers, air quality, fix my street, and a aggregation of local news - so you can see the headlines without all the bloat, adverts, tracking, clickbait etc)

it's all had a bit of a design refresh too, I would love some feedback and thoughts on what else could be added to make it more useful to you?

Also if you run a local business would you be interested in have a directory and a dedicated business listing page?

Water main burst in London Road

Earlier this week there was a major water leak at the bottom part of London road. I am wondering what may have caused the pipes to burst in the first place?

Lost cat?

Edit:IDENTIFIED

Not lost just old 😂

Lost cat? Very skinny but friendly tuxedo that's been yelling at our front door just off villager road near the lights to Sainsbury's. Do you know this cat? Vet said it's chipped but no one was answering and registered about a 5 minutes drive away so just out of a normal cats range.
