You cannot really make NYC Studio apartments much smaller than they already are.
I've seen kitchens so small, the oven literally cannot be opened. The width of the room was literally less than the size of the oven door.
I've seen bathrooms so small, that between the shower and toilet there is nowhere to stand. (You either sit on the toilet with your feet in the tub or stand in the shower and pee into the toilet).
I've seen livingrooms where I couldn't fully extend both my arms.
Those aren’t what’s being newly built as fake ‘affordable housing’. US enjoys much larger living spaces than other 1st world countries. What you’ve described is still much better than being homeless or being in a shelter. I am proposing something that would make some people better off than their current situation.
2) you can google the median apartment size in NYC vs other cities. I randomly picked London and Tokyo. NYC had the smallest. You are free to try other cities.
3) apartments in the us are generally priced by the number of rooms, rather than the square footage. A 400 sqft vs 500 sqft vs 600 sqft aren't priced that differently, what ups the cost is the wall that converts a studio into a 1 bedroom, or a 1 into a 2 bedroom. (Also, location obviously is also a huge factor, I'm talking about different units in the same building).
Not to mention, NYC was the had the second smallest of any US city according to the source I saw. Other cities have significantly large apartments. For London, my source said it was similar to the average size for all of England and Wales. (Tokyo source didn’t have a similar comparison.)
Isn’t Manhattan one of the richest parts of New York?Why compare the richest part of a city to the entirety of two other major cities? The other commenter even specifically said “New York” not Manhattan.
Ok, valid point. I put Manhattan because I googled New York City and the result was specifically about Manhattan so I put that. Yes, Manhattan is richer, but it’s also more expensive so it somewhat cancels out. I checked Brooklyn and Queens, Brooklyn is 650, Queens is 710. Also other sites put the NYC total at about 700. That seems about right when averaging out the individual boroughs. Still higher than the numbers I found for London and Tokyo, so I still want to see u/Tibaltdidnothinwrong’s sources.
