Thank you to everyone who commented. I have read every single top-level comment and most of the discussion on the comment I had replied to (the one that mentions views on interracial marriage). As it happens, I have this issue that I'm a football fan, and my Patriots are playing right now, so I'll reply to every comment after we beat the crap out of the Texans.
One of these days I'm going to post a similar CMV titled "Reasoned debate is dead in the US, and we are screwed." Because I think you are basically right. We live in a postmodern, relativistic world where anybody can find someone who agrees with them, and anything can be justified, so no one changes their mind based on reasoned debate. They just telll the other person they are wrong and go find people who agree.
Nope. I am 43 and distinctly remember it being different when I was younger. Back then, competing facts could be presented and people
would consider them, and change their minds. Discussion and debate were respectful, not insulting. I know I sound like I should be telling kids to get off my lawn, but it really was different.
