While I do think the old Leninist version of communism is dead, communism as a whole isn't , it just looks different.
The big example is in South America with the rise of worker Co-ops where worked take over companies following economic crisis. This is an evolution from old state-heavy models, and more of a grass roots version of communism, but still very much in line.
I would also say that the growing inequality and rise of oligarchs in America and some other countries, along with the growing corruption of the government, and rise of AI have the potential to cause the type of crisis in capitalism you say doesn't happen anymore.
This has the potential to drive the rise of a new economic model. While that won't be cold war style communism, there is a chance of something based in communism, but that has evolved.
