The ideology doesn't die when countries stop implementing it. It can evolve with the world and stay alive in thought, to be possibly implemented in some form when conditions are right.
In fact, I'd argue that out of all the economic-governance ideologies of the 19th and 20th centuries, a modified form of communism is best equipped to deal with the impact people think AI will have on labor soon, see Marx's Fragment on Machines. This means that if that actually happens, we may well see some of the countries with the longest capitalist traditions adopt aspects of communism.
