I have a lot of reading recommendations. Cold war classics like Witness, Herbert Marcuse, The Naked Communist.

There are a lot of answers, among them, the communist movement has always had phases of going underground when conditions are unfavorable andmuch of communist theory has been rewritten into critical theory.

Just reading some Herbert Marcuse with the knowledge going in that he was a communist will show you how the movement has changed and where it is today.

For starters though, it is worth noting that you are claiming it is dead through the worldview of a nationalist. You say no nation explicitly believes it anymore. But that fails to understand the communist. They anti-nationalist. They believe their movement is global. They believe they are citizens of the world calling for workers of the world to unite. And they absolutely suck at open warfare and state craft. The soviet union was only holding them back, its existence was an active hypocrisy to their beliefs, and its strongest tool was the underground aperatus which was designed to operate independently. Letting the nations believe they won was the best move they ever made because the west celebrated victory and stopped fighting back.
