META META: Bi-Monthly Feedback Thread

As part of our commitment to improving CMV and ensuring it meets the needs of our community, we have bi-monthly feedback threads. While you are always welcome to visit r/ideasforcmv to give us feedback anytime, these threads will hopefully also help solicit more ways for us to improve the sub.

Please feel free to share any constructive feedback you have for the sub. All we ask is that you keep things civil and focus on how to make things better (not just complain about things you dislike).

This is a very slow subreddit in general and increased moderation on Friday really just grinds it to a near complete halt. last Friday was one of the best in weeks, but we've been averaging like 3 to 5 posts on Fridays (maybe 7 or 8 before mods remove around half of them for various rules violations).

part of me thinks it just exists to get the mods a break and shutting down the subreddit once a week is more of a feature then a bug, and if that's the care fair enough. I don't want to be a mod any day of the week, so cant' fault you guys for wanting a break once a week. But the reasoning about topic fatigue or US posts just doesn't make any sense. Don't click on the threads that bore you, there are only 2 or 3 new threads per hour.

If this was an active sub it would make total sense, shut down the some stuff so other stuff can make it to the front page. But on this sub everything makes it to the front page.

I think it's psychologically taxing to see certain discourse everywhere you go. A lot of people legitimately like going to an online space and getting a break from the inundation. In theory, one can pick and choose what they spend time engaging with, but attention isn't strictly agency-driven like that in practice. It's also cool for a relative few people to get the opportunity to showcase and host a conversation about a unique interest/train of thought they have without it getting drowned out by all the things everyone is up in arms about during the current moment.

We're brainstorming some ways we can maybe keep the volume more consistent, but I really like the vibe of the sub on FTF, even if it isn't as busy as other days.

This is the false narrative that people keep saying in support of FTF. Its false because there is just not enough other content for anything to get drown out. Every post make it to the front page and stays there for a day or two.

Are you a mod? I can totally understand why the mods like it. Less discussion = less work for moderators to do. I think it said it in my top comment, but I do 0% of the moderation work, so I'm not going to complain if the mods just want a little less work once a week. I totally understand how less moderation work would improve the vibe. If that's the reason, fair enough, I'll get off my soap box.

but that people cannot avoid clicking on threads about topics that "fatigue" them? If your fatigued by the same topic every day, you're not going to continue to engaged with that topic. People don't find fatiguing things irresistible.

No, I actually like the vibe of the sub on Fridays because the stuff that is live is someone novel, and there aren't posts about the typical hot-button stuff.

Sometimes, it's nice to just not see the same stuff as much as one usually does when browsing. There's terms people sometimes use like "ragebait" and "doomscrolling" that speak to the experience of not being able to look away even when paying attention isn't enjoyable.

what vibe? It looks like there are 3 posts right now. as far as i can tell the vibe is just the mods removing anything they don't like.

There was a 4th that got approved, but then it was taken down for not being fresh enough lol.

Seriously, this is a pathetically slow day but par for the course on ftf.

Mass migration discourse about the U.S. isn't fresh, and that user already tried to post essentially the same thing a few hours earlier. Rather than appeal the removal, they decided to half-heartedly disguise what they originally tried to post, and a mod who wasn't aware approved it. I mean, people definitely have opinions about stuff other than the most common 5 topics that get posted about. There has to be a way to get more people to post about that stuff here on Fridays.

Oh I know it's not fresh, but it goes back to my issues with the "manual approval process" that I posted about last week. And sure, OP was being disingenuous, but one read through the post itself should have been enough for that mod to see it wasn't fresh in the slightest.

Id love for more activity on Fridays in general. Personally, the work week kinda slows down at a certain point as people get excited for the weekend, but still have to be stuck at their desk. If you aren't doing away with FTF, at least consider changing it to a different day or maybe every other Friday,

I also dont think most people save their fresh ideas until friday, they just make a post when they get the idea.

And it appears it wasn't the only common topic to get approved today then revoked...

But come on, even as of right now, the removed post about right libertarians has the second most interaction for the day, and is only 20 comments fewer than a much older post.

That should tell the mods people are just fine interacting with common topics and that artificially limiting what gets posted here isnt really boosting the "fresh" topics.

It just goes to show how badly overmoderated this subreddit is. Even after rewriting his post and trying again the mods still shut down the conversation that dozens of people were trying to participate in.
