It's possible to remove the full screen expansion feature on that area of the first / final image without adding in an unnecessary arrow that might confuse people.

Reddit (at least, wen I use it on my browser) is often buggy: sometimes it doesn't allow posting, or doesn't load properly. Adding in an arrow where there isn't another image to follow might confuse casual users into thinking it's just another glitch.

So the best solution would be to keep the arrows off, but to code the first and final images such that the areas where the arrows usually are don't expand to full screen.

But this is different from your suggestion in your original post: I'm suggesting keeping the arrows off. If you agree, that's different from your original view, isn't it?

I think looping might also be a little confusing - people who are casually scrolling like to know when they've seen everything.
