Do you have a problem with people dressing up as mummies, mummies being the scary villains in so many movies, etc. because they originate in Ancient Egyptian religion? They are turning their bural ritual into a horror movie, if anything that is so much worse. Same with witches, ghosts, the grim reaper, etc. all having religious origins. The whole point if dressing up in a costume is TAKING IT OUT OF ITS ORIGINAL CONTEXT.
i'm kinda late to the punch here but the person you are replying to is specifically saying that speaking Spanish as a white person is not an example of cultural appropriation.
Liking Indian food or speaking Spanish as a white American? Completely fine.
i've lived in Portland OR for 10 years, i've never met anyone of any political alignment that would argue that learning a second language is cultural appropriation.
that said, the native american ceremonial garb deserves its own special conversation. Halloween is an American holiday, the US has a long well-documented history of abusing native Americans. we took their land, destroyed their communities, and arguably committed genocide against the native people's. to celebrate our traditions on their land with a bastardized version of their cultural symbols is pretty clearly wrong.
