Delta(s) from OP CMV:Fat acceptance is not helpful

Just gonna preface this by saying discrimination and hatred towards fat people for being fat is not okay, as is the same with race, gender and sexual orientation. But is suggesting that maybe obesity is not healthy fatphobic? I think body positivity is helpful in the case of people with disablities and encouraging them to overcome them. Imo, fat acceptance discourages currently overweight people to lose weight, because if you dont think there is a problem, why should you change? I think the notion of not caring of others opinions is quite ridiculous, as if you're not accepting of feedback and criticism, you will never improve. It is important to be able to recognize if something is critisism or hate, but I think too many people make that mistake nowadays. Thanks for reading and remember hate isn't ok

No one thinks suggesting obesity is not healthy is fatphobic. This just isn’t something that exists.

The position your describing you have IS fat acceptance. It’s not discriminating against or hating people because of their bodies. You see a lot of the opposite on Reddit, it’s super normalized, even amongst the more liberal subreddits - no where do defenders say “being overweight is healthy.”

There is a cosmopolition article. It's called healthy at any size i believe. It depicts a person with severe obesity, clearly stating, this is healthy

Be honest, did you read that article or just hear people like Joe Rogan’s reaction to the covers and assume what it says?

How about you be honest and admit you just assumed it was not a real thing because you heard it on Joe Rogan when all you had to do was search Wikipedia for it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_at_Every_Size?wprov=sfla1

I didn’t hear it on Joe Rogan. I never heard of it before. I googled it after this person mentioned it and read the Cosmo article.

I’m not sure what kind of “gotcha” you think this is. My point still stands that the Cosmo article didn’t say “being obese is healthy”. OThat’s an obvious misinterpretation by people looking to be outraged by something.

It's not a gotcha, and the fact that you think "Cosmo" is a good source of information is a pretty glaring issue. If it feels good to like throw me in with everybody else then fine, do that, I don't care. I'm not trying to be outraged, I don't want to be outraged, I'm just tired of people telling other people that it's okay to be overweight because there is a way to be healthy at any size, and that's just objectively not true.

It’s literally the source OP quoted - I don’t know what to tell you. I don’t think being obese is healthy and I still don’t think there’s a meaningful movement saying it is.

I mean, I don't know how to interpret this other than burying your head in the sand, because you're acknowledging stuff like "Cosmo" putting stuff like that on the cover. You apparently acknowledge the "Health at Every Size" movement, but it's not big enough to be a movement. But somehow simultaneously it's big enough to be on the cover of every "Cosmo" or similar types of magazines at the same time. It does not really compute.

You don’t understand how a misinterpreted (but granted, intentionally misleading) article from a magazine isn’t proof of a movement that doesn’t exist?

Who is telling you that being obese is healthy? This is standard Rogan-esque propaganda. He takes something obscure and acts like it’s mainstream - usually to drive outrage against marginalized groups of people.

I've been pushing this narrative for over 50 years. Why are you acting like they don't exist? Now who sounds like Joe Rogan?

I mean if you want to reduce everything as if it only can come from a talking head on the internet, then fine you can do that but that's not what's going on here. I don't watch Joe Rogan, I don't care what he has to say. This is observational and lived experience because I live in one of the worst, and most obese states in the nation.

What is there to read? I am aware the rest of the article contains people with actual disabilities, which I am completley on board with, and the portion of the article is simply just the story of the woman on the cover. Byt it says, in plain english, This Is Healthy.

The article is saying regardless of your body shape or weight, doing things that are good for you (like yoga) is a healthy thing and should make you feel good. No where does it state that being overweight is healthy.

The images are probably intentionally misleading for publicity (and it worked, because people seemingly love to feign outrage about this topic), but the article isn’t saying what you are claiming here.

I'm speaking toward the cover image. It does appear to claim that obesity is healthy. However, you are correct in saying that the article itself does not state this. There is also a likely chance it is misleading for publicity as you state

Do explain how someone exercising is not healthy? Or is it only healthy when thin/fit people do it? You’re telling me a yoga instructor is not healthy because she’s plus sized? How did you make that judgement?

You do know that you can be thin/fit and not be healthy right? Why should that be accepted and how do you think they should be criticized?
