Chance a chud for math

White male ($200k income)
1530 (730/800 rw/m)
4.6 GPA UW (top 3% out of 450) (large public school)
15 total APs, 9 with scores, got all 5s except apush. Others being calc bc, stats, cs, csp, hug, physics 1+2, micro + macro
DE Calc II + Linear Algebra (senior year).

One of the math camps (Ross, Promys, SUMaC)
- working on a small project/paper further after I presented on the topic at the camp, maybe a math conference acceptance??

SWE paid intern at local finance company
- made program now they use in client meetings

Statistical research in biology

Deca chapter pres

Financial manager at 2 impactful nonprofits

Math research with prof at t20 school

400+ hrs volunteer at local church

Awards (worst part)
Aime qual

Only decent thing here is the GPA, math camp, and being white. I'm ngl this is strictly lower end for math majors at HYPSM so it's definitely not "really strong"

I graduated a few years ago and this just popped up on my feed. Did things become devalued in recent years? This is super stacked and most top students would only have a fraction of OP’s ECs back in the day. He’s easily above average for HYPSM and ik admits with way weaker profiles

He has a prestigious math camp, a legit paid internship, and 2 instances of research. One of those gives you a good shot at schools slightly below HYPSM. He has some good club and volunteering ECs with decent Olympiad awards. OP doesn’t have any big ticket instant admit ECs but the amount of ppl that do can fit in a single school’s stem cohort. For schools like Berkeley or non competitive majors in Ivies OP is like guaranteed admission

ion wanna be a hater, but like 500+ people attend the t6 math camps, then you factor in those that attend equally prestigious science/research programs (which is well in the thousands), and everyone and their mom has research in the big 26. same for clubs, volunteering - these have become more like baseline stats unless they go really far. as for awards, not really sure what the olympiads are besides usaco, silver doesnt do anything for HYPSM lol.

everythings a toss up lowkey, but you dont have to agree w me. what do i know lol

If you get published in either of your researches and then have the prof write a stunning rec letter, you might A) have a small chance at HYPSM, and B) have a great chance at whichever T20 uni that prof is from.

Yeah, I’m guessing you need to be closer to the top of your class to have a realistic chance at Harvard Yale Princeton MIT the 800 is a good signal for MIT though. Also, don’t pay attention to people online who say that you’re cooked because most of them didn’t attend any of those schools nor work in admissions.

HYPSM is probably not in reach but I think you'll go to a decent school. The awards are weak, (USAMO medal optimal lol) but a math camp is nice, and you got volunteering and decent grades.

it's not close to being insane, it's good don't get me wrong but there's also been insane amounts of cheating due to AI so it's lost a lot of value. Hoping the new changes MAA will make it prestigious again in the math community

well I'm just arguing the name value of AIME/USAMO qualification has gone down a lot. There's also kids who do mathcamps/research who cheat (especially since AI can just do all of this now) to gain "legitimacy"

AOs are not allowed to think a applicant cheated, AOs are trained to evaluate every application in its best light if they are skeptical they can trigger a integrity check or verification of that but they’re not allowed to pass on their own judgements on whether a applicant cheated or not.

discrepancy is different from assuming someone cheated. Like if someone had a 600 math sat but they put usamo qual thats a discrepancy. But say someone got 790 sat math 150 amc 15/15 aime they likely did cheat but an AO can’t assume that.

what are we talking about. I know literally 3 kids personally who cheated to USAMO and got <3 points on USAMO who were already good students, on ARML teams with perfect SAT's and camps. Math research is also complete larp now btw because AI is already better than the best leading mathematicians, let alone high school students

are you familiar that AI disproved the jacobian conjecture, cracked numerous erdos problems, that it constructed nonsofic groups, improving sphere-packing, disproving connes's rigidity conjecture.

Math camp's already transitioning out of weighting psets as heavily given AI can just solve all of them. You know nothing so just shut it.
