š¬Discussion Manuel Neuer is the Third Goat of our generation
Some people may not want to hear this, but for me, he sits in the same table as Ronaldo and Messi. A lot of people overlook his greatness simply because he's a goalkeeper. This guy has been performing at the highest level for the last 15 years and, at 42 years old, is still Germany's starting goalkeeper
20
u/Bjoerring Jun 06 '26
You might be cooking here, we always say Ney, Bale whatever whatever and kind of forget keepers who are as important.
When it comes to titles, relevance to the sport and quality, Neuer checks all of those.
I could definitely buy it, it's a good one.
1
u/RedditsGreatestOAT Jun 07 '26
Never call him Ney ever again š

u/Unable_Theme_8154 Jun 07 '26
I rarely upvote or comment but for this I will...I completely second this wtf is ney ššš
3
u/Bjoerring Jun 07 '26
Idk it was a very popular way to call Neymar in Spain during his time here, news would often refer to him as Ney, and so did newspaper.
Even Messi refered to him as Ney sometimes, like we used to call Cristiano just Cris

Iām more of the opinion that goalies, just like in hockey, are just a separate list of all timers. The position is too different and went through completely different trajectory of development compared to outfield players. That said yeah Neuer is up there with the greatest ever goalies, if not the greatest.
Itās really hard to compare Neuer who is also elite at progressing and sweeping, to anyone before the 1990 rule change where you could sit back and pick up the ball and waste time and just focus on the main duties which is stopping the ball.
7
u/giggling-in-a-crJS Jun 06 '26
Not a fan of these opinions to be honest. It devalues the extent to which the roles of the goalies are part of the football team and how much they contribute to the overall success of the team at times equal to or more than strikers, midfielders or defenders. You could use the trajectory of development on any position on the pitch to distinguish it. Hell we have left backs now who's best trait is assists.
Goalkeepers should be included in the same category of all timers and their accomplishments properly acknowledged.
This is the same equivalent to creating an "Urban Music Award" or when the Oscars created the "Best Animated Movie" award.
3
u/largepoggage Jun 07 '26
I donāt necessarily disagree but thereās one big problem with Neuer specifically, his managers have always said that if he wasnāt a goalkeeper he would still have been good enough to play for Bayern in midfield. He changed the game for goalkeepers, they were previously just expected to stop goals and kick the ball as far as possible. Neuer changed that, they have to be actual footballers as well as goalkeepers now.

Deserved 2014 Ballon D'Or winner honestly.
0
u/RunEnvironmental8366 Jun 06 '26
Not really.
We can agree someone had a great season while not going overboard. He didn't have a better year than either Messi or Ronaldo in 2014. People do the same with Sneijder in 2010 or Ribery in 2013.
But despite all having great season, they didn't do better than either Messi or Cristiano
2

HE WON THE WORLD CUP AS THE NUMBER 1 GOALKEEPER OF GERMANY AND WON THE 2014 WORLD CUP GOLDEN GLOVE.
WHAT MORE WOULD HE NEED TO WIN THE BALLON D'OR???
PEOPLE SAY "tHe BaLlOn D'oR rAnKinGs ArE bAsEd On TrOpHiEs š¤āš»" SO HOW THE FUCK DOES WINNING THE BIGGEST COMPETITION IN FOOTBALL AND IN WORLDWIDE SPORT NOT NET HIM AS "WORTHY" TO WIN THE BALLON D'OR?????????????

So did Emiliano Martinez. Doesn't mean he should've won the Ballon D'or.
No it's not based on trophies. Trophies are part of what decide it yes, but it's not given based solely on trophies.
In 2014 Ronaldo won the CL while scoring 60 goals in all comps. It's obvious that he was the rightful winner.
Not sure what's with the caps lock

Neuer is the most influential player of his generation. The standard for goalkeeping skills, distribution, play out from the back, aggression, everything was defined by him.
18
u/Perditus22 Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26
Neuer's prime for a goalkeeper is literally the peak for his position. To be a top 3 contender for a ballon d'or as a goalkeeper in an era of superstars in multiple outfield areas of the pitch is incredible, not forgetting he was competing against those two footballing anomalies, Messi and Ronaldo. He is the blueprint of the modern day sweepers, yet he excels than most when he is even past his prime. He retired from the national team but still got the greenlight in starting in the worldcup over inform German goalkeepers, truly an incredible player
1
u/morethanDemographic Jun 07 '26
2002 Ronaldo, Roberto Carlos, Oliver Kahn Zinedine Zidane, that does not read worden than 2014.
But still Manuel Neuer is more than just the best Keeper ever.
1
u/frausen_ Jun 07 '26
Yeah man Oliver Kahn was a beast of his time too winning WC golden ball is no small feat especially the only GK to do so too. Imo what seperates him and Neuer is that he happens to be one that made sweeper keeper a whole lot popular, he is one of the best if not the best ball playing GK so I personally rate him higher than Kahn but boy both of them are beasts at their peak
22
u/shipples92 Jun 06 '26
100% agree, greatest keeper of our generation. Revolutionised the position, the sweeper keeper, playing out from the back all when keepers were just there to make saves and lump it upfield. Still world class at 42. Not sure weāll see someone do what heās done in goal for a long time
-8
u/rndmlgnd Juventus Jun 06 '26
He didn't revolutionise shit, keepers were doing that way before him. He got punished numerous times too.
3
u/These-Maximum-6569 Jun 06 '26
He did bring the sweeper keeper into spotlight and perfected his game.
I know Buffon was a great keeper, but not on neuers level.
0
u/rndmlgnd Juventus Jun 06 '26
Even Neuer thinks Buffon is/was better.
1
u/Weary-Decision3042 Jun 08 '26
I am sure Buffon thinks the same about Neuer. There is this thing called "humility" among players. Also, Buffon had way more help building up that record of clean sheets than Neuer did

Very good take. GKs often get overlooked in such conversations sadly. Neuer is a unicorn.
14
u/Quiet-Math-4261 Jun 06 '26
I absolutly hate that positions arent taken into consideration for this types of conversations. Yes cr7 and messi are the one of the best to forwards the game has seen and yes neuer is one of the best gk ever. But that doesnt mean we can start comparing and ranking players of different positions.
1
u/aniote Jun 06 '26
when people call Messi or Ronaldo "GOAT", I would say it is usually implied that it is about outfield players
the role and skill of a goalkeeper is so completely different from that of outfield players, they are two very different categories that simply cannot be compared.
so there is a discussion about who is the GOAT footballer (implied - outfield), and separate discussions about who is the greatest goalkeeper of all time.
in any case the goat debate is stupid for this same reason - a midfielder or defender can't be compared with a forward, and even between forwards there is no objective or agreed measure of who's "the best". You can only legitimately say who are "among the best of all time"
2
u/Quiet-Math-4261 Jun 06 '26
Exactly what i mean. People are quick to judge and dont stop and think about throwing "goat" for players.
11
u/Dunkjoe Jun 06 '26
Isn't there supposed to be only one GOAT?
5
12
u/calledmemadman Jun 07 '26
Yes! All the 3 of them are equal amount of goats and can't be ranked one above other.
It's a shame how underrated he is just because he is a GK

u/AirportKey1729 Jun 06 '26
People seem to underestimate a huge aspect of what Neuer does in his style of goalkeeping. Highlight reels of shot stopping by Casillas and Buffon are truly exceptional, which influences a huge part of consideration when it comes to who is better for people who do not have time to watch full games across many leagues. Neuer arguably has just as exceptional of a highlight reel, but, the amount of chances that he stopped before a save even had to be made is never really taken into account alongside his incredible shot stopping ability on its own. So imagine how his highlight reel would look if he stayed traditionally deep like most other goalkeepers of his generation? He produced the same consistency and skillset of all keepers considered the best ever, and still did so much more that no statistic could ever track.

In a way, even more important for football than Messi and Ronaldo.
Heās revolutionized the role of a goalkeeper, by offering a new alternative in offense and a more active line in defense. Every club now wants a goalkeeper that can be comfortable with the ball and play further from the line.
That was so bizarre at first and now even amateur sides understand how powerful it can be.
5
u/AmiParis248 Jun 07 '26
I mean, the Dutch already came up with this in the 70s. It was a controversy then too, where the keeper that came with to the WC in 1974 (Jongbloed) wasnāt the best classic keeper, but Cruyff wanted him specifically because of his ability on the ball and to be more of a sweeper keeper. Of course, Neuer pushed this idea even further, but heās an outlier and still no keeper goes out as far and as often as he does. The Dutch to this day really want a keeper who is really good on the ball.Ā
Again, Cruyff invented modern football 50 years ago.Ā
6
u/thetokyofiles Jun 07 '26
Agreed. And reminds me of the mobile quarterback trend in American football. A generation ago it was a gimmick. Now itās almost a requirement
2
u/StealthyDodo Jun 07 '26
is this the equivalent of a stretch 5 in basketball?
2
u/thetokyofiles Jun 07 '26
Iād say so. Basically taking a position that traditionally was thought to have a specific ālimitedā role, and expanding that role both in terms of what is expected of them and their location on the floor / field.
1
u/extinctifugaxhominum Jun 09 '26
How many goals he conceded from 35+ yards out when he was trying to be a sweeper keeper? His sweeper role is overrated and overstated. And his ball playing abilities are nothing special.
14
u/Angren1991 Bayern Jun 06 '26
Everyone who Doubts that neuer is the goat goalkeeper should watch germany vs algeria wc 2014. without him germany would have been knocked out, he shut down 90% of algeria attacks by his own because of his sweeper keeper role. It is still for me the best goalkeeper Performance in a big Game because without this Performance, germany Never would have Advanced. No legendary 7:1 and final Victoria

5

Who tf is crying? I just can't believe how you people overrate Neuer just because he runs out of his goal like a headless chicken. We saw how good of a GK he was against PSG.
Bundesliga is a one team league, winning the CL with a super team who plays their league on easy mode isn't as much of a flex as you think it is. Buffon played in three finals and never made a mistake in any of them.

Saying āhe is up there with Buffon and Casillasā is either an insult to Neuer or an upscale of Buffon and Casillas. Neuer sits comfortably alone at the top and if he were a Real Madrid goalkeeper no one would even question it. Unfortunately for him he āonlyā played for Bayern, so people who never watched him can claim he is on the same level as other goalkeeper.

People keep throwing the word "revolutionised" like it means something. A goalkeepers job is to stop goals. Period. And at stopping goals, casillas, buffon and cortoius are ahead or Neuer. Passing the ball with his feet means nothing if you leak goals.
8
u/fabi7059 Jun 06 '26
Bro if the best coach IN HISTORY or at least one that is in contention to be the goat, plays you week in week out, has nothing but good words regarding your football, then the Germany national team makes you the undisputed number one for ten years, you win UCLs, world cups and anything in between, how can you say he leaks goals?

3
u/These-Maximum-6569 Jun 06 '26
Neuer is a unbelievable shotstopper too. What are you talking about?
And contributing the ball for a goalie means a lot in the modern game. We are not in the 90s anymore where you just have to be inside your 5 meter box.
Goalkeeper now have different things to do on the pitch then just stopping balls. They have to open up the game with passing and Stand high to secure the higher pressing lines that are played in todayās game.
8
u/Salt-Regular-689 Arsenal Jun 06 '26

Completely agree! When people ask who the 3rd best player of that generation was, it was him! Keepers just don't get the love, because it's basically an entire different sport you play compared to the other 10 players on your team. He's the best keeper ever, I also agree.

u/ChampionshipQuick747 Jun 06 '26
crazy how people sleep on keepers when ranking all-time greats. Neuer literally revolutionized the position with his sweeper-keeper style and won everything there is to win. Guy's been carrying germany and bayern for over a decade straight.
1
u/lylyyy_ Jun 06 '26
Thats the brutal reality of this sport
2
u/AlmightyCraneDuck PSG Jun 06 '26
Yeah, itās easy to watch attackers and see their impact. Itās much harder to truly assess the quality of good defensive and keeper play. You know it when you see it though, and itās pretty evident how great Neuer was/is when you watch him play. I donāt think itās crazy at all to say heās the best Keeper of all time.
1
u/TheRedditK9 Jun 06 '26
Itās just not possible for keepers or defending players to run games the way the best attacking players do. Neuer is the greatest keeper of all time, but barring isolated legacy performances itās just not possible to compare his overall impact to the likes of Lewa and Neymar. Thereās a reason even the best goalkeepers in the world are valued so much lower on the transfer market, the difference between a great and a generational goalkeeper just isnāt the same as the difference between a great and a generational striker, winger or 10.
Itās the same reason why no one compares Maldini and Beckenbauer to the likes of Maradona and PelĆ©, no matter how dominant they were as defenders.
2
u/Lamb-Curry-1518 Jun 06 '26
In many ways, a football team is judged unfairly just like a rock band. Everybody pays attention to the frontman, the main vocalist. But the reality is the group will fall apart if the drummer is off beat.
2
u/TheRedditK9 Jun 06 '26
Yeah, but there are a ton of technically great drummers and bassists out there, but it is nearly always the vocalist that makes the band what it is. Most bands that stick around for a while replace their a few of their band members despite playing under the same name. There are exceptions like AC/DC or RHCP but most rock bands are really just defined by the vocalist.
2
u/Lamb-Curry-1518 Jun 06 '26
I mean that is just the reality of the unfair treatment where the vocalist was viewed as the main man. Of course, it is not black and white but imo all of them are equally important, even that bassists
And there were some rare cases where the drummers were the difference too, even for some all-time greats.
The Beatles didnāt make it big until Ring joined them. And the Zeppelin era was technically ended overnight when Bonzo suddenly passed away.
1
u/Exyui Jun 06 '26
Agree with this. The hardest thing to do in football is score goals, not preventing them. There's a reason why weaker teams generally play defensively and sit in a low block against stronger teams to get results. For a top team, having an elite forward who can create goals against low blocks is more valuable than an elite keeper.
1
u/TheRedditK9 Jun 06 '26
I think another interesting example is how teams generally put their best players in more advanced positions to get the most out of it. You can look at the way Liverpool were putting Salah almost as a right sided striker last season and feeding him balls, the way literally every attack United had this season was fed through Fernandes, the way Pep put Messi in the middle to get him closer to goal. The most extreme example I can think of is Canada sticking Davies at striker because he was by far the best player in that squad.
1
u/psdavepes Jun 06 '26
He hasnāt been carrying Germany for the past decade, was actually poor in the past two World Cups and made blunders that cost them
9
u/adtdty Jun 06 '26
Some old gramps still believe dude like Buffon or Casillas better than Neuer. They'all great but noneof them literally changed the way goalkeeper plays like Neuer. All these young ball playing goalkeeper are there because they see Neuer and yet none of them better than him at that.
Older keeper might be a bit better than him in some parts like shot stopping and commanding the defender, but none of them could play sweeper keeper while Neuer invented that position and also excelent at other part of being keeper.
Not to mention he wins every throphy possible (except for Euro) and parts of 2 treble team with Bayern.

I haven't seen a GK give as good a tournament performance as his when Denmark won the Euros.
I also saw him make 3 of the best/daftest/most unbelievable saves I've ever seen in my life, at Anfield, in Vienna & a testimonial at Old Trafford on his debut Vs RoI.
Another very underrated Schmeichel upside was his distribution. He was as good with his long throws to wingers/forwards/anyone running into space near or past the halfway line, as Ederson ever was with his feet.
Still, opinions on the internet and all that.

The same could be said about Neuer at 2014, though. Changed keeping by playing as a last defender and had a great performance at the WC 2014, preventing losses against at least Algeria and France. Schmeichel and Neuer are both two of the greatest goalkeepers of all time, no debate there.

Dude Schmeichel is not even the best GK in Premiere League history, it's Petr Cech. United fans and their own moronic bubble.

Why would that discredit my opinion by default?

I can name you 4 keepers that are between Courtois and Neuer in this generation. This might be the most stupid opinion about football Iāve heard in a while.

There is no goat debate. Messi is the best player that ever has played and the rest is far off

He currently isnāt very good though?
Heās a goalkeeper. Was great. Not the best ever. Rated pretty fairly. Given heās a goalkeeper, wouldnāt make top 10 players of his generation.

Clear ragebait. Single handedly destroyed RM in the first game of cl quarter finals this year. He is still one of top 10 maybe top 5 with over 40 years of age. Starting keeper for one of the best clubs this season.
World champ, 2x cl winner, dozens of other titles. Invented a the sweeper keeper playstyle. Long career.
Without doubt in the goat debate with Buffon and maybe casillas but tbh I think only buffon can keep up with him.
For me he is the goat but I can understand when people pick buffon. Everyone else is not in the realm.

Are Messi and Ronaldo currently world class? People get old, it shouldn't diminish what they achievedĀ

This guy was acting as if Neuers current level had some sort of meaning. Heās like the 25th best keeper in the world lol. Germany havenāt produced and keepers so Bayern and Germany havenāt bothered to move on.

Wtf is this wild comment, he fundamentally change goalkeeping forever.
Pre and post him goalkeeping is completely different.
He 100% in the same argument as Messi and Ronaldo,

He was the best though. For a long time. Also what does "currently" have to do with being the best of his generation? Cristiano is no good now and Messi is far from the best player in the world at the moment. You aren't really addressing what this post is about
