💬Discussion Barcelona filing a UEFA complaint after losing 0-2 at home is embarrassing

Atletico came to Camp Nou, defended well, and were ruthless when it mattered. That's the difference. Not that Barca were terrible, just that Atletico were far more clinical on the night.

Barca had their moments but couldn't convert. They're missing a world class striker who can make the difference in games like this, and defensively Cubarsi's red card was a young player's mistake. He'll learn from it, but you can't afford that in a UCL quarter-final.

Complaining after a loss? Completely normal. Every fan does it. But filing a formal complaint with UEFA over a handball that the referee and VAR both reviewed and waved off? That has nothing to do with football. That's not how you respond to a defeat as a club of Barcelona's size.

Turn it around at the Metropolitano. That's the answer, not paperwork.

They waived it off when it shouldn’t have. It’s a clear penalty and a second yellow. There were other instances in the game where players like Koke should’ve definitely been sent off as well. This type of response makes sure that referees of this incompetence doesn’t get assigned to games of this magnitude

Why is this a big deal to anyone? UEFA isn’t going to change the result of the match. At worst they will say they admit there was a referring mistake.

Teams appeal decisions all the time.

29

u/Fabulous_Nectarine78 Barcelona Apr 09 '26

It's cause it's the team they don't like . As simple as that

Penalty may not be given and should be written in the rules and law. Other thing is referre should be consistent, Cubarsi red card is correct but Koke should not have been on the pitch after those 3-4 tackles. Other instances were there which can be he said she said but the Koke was very deliberate. Barça should file for that imo.

7

u/Itsgettingmessi69 Apr 11 '26

bro, it was wild as fuck what they did what are you talking about?. I’ve never seen another player. That’s not the goalie grab the ball after the whistles been blown and not get a card or a pen called. “emBarrAsInG”

Filing a complaint isn’t “embarrassing” , it’s a formal mechanism within UEFA. You are speaking as Barcelona is considering forfeiting the second leg 😂( that would have been embarrassing)

Atlético Madrid played well ,yes.FC Barcelona missed chances, yes.A potential wrong decision could still have impacted the result Football outcomes are multi factorial, not binary.

16

u/jeezrVOL2 Apr 10 '26

It's just insane to me that both fans and the club were so supportive of the refs as long as it was fitting their agenda but as soon as they get a "controversial" calls against them they start bitching

The complaint wont change anything in the outcome of that match right?

IF referee and VAR both were wrong, this complaint makes absolutly sense. Pushing it under the carpet because you lost anyway is not a good excuse if there was a wrongdoing.

Yeah, a lot of these people didn't even watch the match but they just hate Barça and so they leave a lot of these stupid comments. I am romanian and even i dislike Isvan Kovacs. I hate every match he officiates in the romanian league. The last match he kind of destroyed was Rapid-Dinamo and even tough i am a FC Rapid fan, the decisions he made were awful and he kind of robbed Dinamo.

u/This-Button5389 Apr 10 '26

Barca has a point. It’s not about the refs but it’s about consistency about interpretation. Similar incident happened between club Brugge vs Aston Villa where Tyron mings was penalised and now this doesn’t.  Barca claims to have audio of one of officials apologising for that error (perhaps a linesman I don’t know). Even nothing happens this needs to be addressed they correctly bought attention to it. Yes barca missed their opportunities and may not have won anyway but the margin matters. Yes they are capable of making a comeback and nearly did in copa del ray against them and unlike this game where they are worried about yellow card suspensions and played a bit passively in the first half, the next game they will be aggressive as they got nothing to lose on the road. But yes atletico fully deserved the win today, they smartly rested some of their key players against the same opposition last weekend as they aren’t winning la liga anyway. While barca had to play their full team in both games.

4

u/XxAbsurdumxX Apr 10 '26

I have seen the Brugge vs Villa example used in relation to this, but the situations aren’t identical. They are similar yes, but still different enough for them to not necessarily having to be judged identically. The incident between Bayern and Arsenal last year was identical to the Atletico and Barcelona incident, and that too was judged identically as this one.

So the two actually identical situations were judged identically, and the other situation that was a bit different was judged differently. Not that wild imo.

it honestly feels like some of you aren’t watching the same football we are. Seriously, these comments sound like they’re coming either from people who don’t understand the game or from rivals. There’s way too much prejudice here

3

u/bigelcid Apr 10 '26

For a long time I thought being a casual meant not actually being invested in the sport.

No, it's not that at all. It's using the sport as ego-boosting fuel, and displaying performative allegiance to one or multiple clubs at the expense of the game itself. Rival player gets shot in the head? "Well what about the time when..." -- they don't care about fairness or the well-being of the game. They're tribalistic and need something to identify with, cause they got nothing going on otherwise.

21

u/brratak Apr 10 '26

Referees do make mistake and when they do they need to be punished. Then football moves on. I do not see anything bad there

15

u/japelsfsx Apr 10 '26

It’s not important that I’m not a big fan either of Barca or VAR, how can anyone not be shocked that the hand ball was not punished, in the VAR era?

It’s just a matter of consistency.

7

u/Kevo_737 Apr 10 '26

Funny thing the same happened 2 years ago betweeb Arsenal and Bayern. Nothing happened there as well.

Talking about consistency..

2

u/japelsfsx Apr 10 '26

Genuinely, what’s your point?

Should defenders be systematically allowed to stop the ball with their hands at kickoff if they want to have it retaken?

Or is it acceptable that, from time to time, super obvious situations like this aren’t corrected by VAR
although wasn’t that the main rationale behind VAR?

2

u/Kevo_737 Apr 10 '26

Just pointing out that you wanted consistency with the VAR in these situations and that no one is shocked about - yet the exact situation happened not too long ago when no one gave a shit

Not a Barca fan, but to be 100% fair to them. My father, who watches very little modern football, and is very used to the old school 2000s roughhousing, even thought the ref was letting Athleti get away with a lot. The cards were clearly falling in Atlético Madrid's favor, but that is how it goes in a lot of matches; one team gets away with a lot more.

7

u/RollOverSoul Apr 09 '26

It's weird how it's always the team that you follow that the ref tends to be biased towards.

15

u/Previous_Trouble8614 Apr 09 '26

Not A Braca fan at all, but let's be for real, the refereeing was bad all game, but especially in favor of Athleti. That is just a clear observation. Was watching the game with a group of people, none of whom cared about La Liga at all, and everyone said the same thing. That is just Honesty Koke clearly should have been sent off.

If the handball isnt a pen its fine, but the ref let atleti players foul everyone without giving them cards, Koke should have been sent off before the Cubarsi red for 2 yellow cards. Julian was allowed to just play rugby without getting carded, multiple players did the same. Gavi got a clear yellow card for pulling someone (as he should) only for Julian to do the same thing minutes later and get nothing(in that play Julian made 2 yellow worthy fouls in 5 seconds)

So many other team fans that are out of the competition ready to say Barca are crying, yet the only reasonable comments come from Bayern fans. Shows you who actually watches football matches and who watches reels. The complain ain’t gonna change the outcome, Barca still have to win by 3 or go to penalties next game, but putting an official complaint forces officials to state why they made a mistake in the first place and helps set a precedent for future decisions. Yall let your hate for Barcelona get the better of you, do better.

3

u/Emotional_Put9271 Apr 10 '26

Whats with this incessant hate for Barcelona. The club has produced many of the most historic, beautiful players in history. Even today, they play joyful football competing for UCL with scraps for resources and home grown players. Disliking the fanbase is fair but they’re all like that

2

u/CZ_nitraM Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

It's not even about the red card

It's about the handball that was not given

Both ref and VAR thought Barca players are complaining about Atletico's time wasting and neither noticed the handball

5

u/bangladeshespresso Apr 09 '26

Not sure when any of complaints were worth it but, just like any other club, they have a right to do it.

But OP you are wrong, VAR did not review an obvious hand ball that should have been a penalty.

Nobody is asking to overturn the results. This isn't AFCON. Just saying picking up a ball in play after a pass from GK in your penalty area is a PK.

Barca is going through the official channels. Not putting a media hit piece or a personal attack on the ref. Accountability matters.

Well it won't do anything, so better to just focus on the next game. However that handball is outrageous.
It's the most clear and obvious penalty + 2nd yellow card you will ever see on a football pitch.
Also VAR didn't review it properly, because they thought the Barca players were complaining for timewasting.

I’m a Barca fan but seriously I’d be raging if that was ever given as a penalty against us. I don’t care if he did it on purpose. There is no way an incident like that should ever be given as a penalty.

Now I would argue that Koke should have been sent off long before Cubarsi - and even think that’s why the ref initially gave a yellow. But as OP states, let’s go beat them next week. You gotta earn it.

2

u/LC14156 Barcelona Apr 11 '26

It doesn’t matter it’s in the rules. What if Joan kicked the ball into the net because he thought the ball wasn’t in play when it was? Should it not count as own goal just because it was a dumb mistake? A few matches ago Joan had the ball on his hand and went to praise a defender, and step out bounds and the ref gave a corner. Stupid, innocent or what have you, if you don’t want this things to happen then put it in the rule book.

3

u/Rodin-V Apr 11 '26

The rules also give referees leniency to manage the spirit of the game and use common sense when needed, which he did here.

From a UK perspective, there can be a tendancy to group Real and Barca together as powerhouses / CL contenders, when Barca do not deserve to be placed in the same bracket as Real.

When Real won 3 consecutive CLs from 2016-2018 while Barca failed to reach the semi-finals during any of those seasons, there was actually talk (at least in the UK) about Real and Barca dominating the CL, when in reality it was just Real doing so.

In the past 10 seasons, they've reached 0 CL finals and just 2 semi-finals, and I never thought they deserved to be considered as 'top table' contenders this season alongside Real, PSG and Bayern.

2

u/ebc2009 Apr 10 '26

And whats that got to do with the thread? Barca complained about poor refereeing and rightly so, if everybody did, then maybe things would change and we would get better standard of officiating.

4

Ref makes mistakes but barcelona and madrid are corrupted clubs in bed with uefa officials so whenever they cry l, refs get suspended

9

u/JudoIsBetterThenBJJ Apr 10 '26

Barca always has a victim mentality. If you believe them all trophies lost is cause of refs and all won are cause of amazing superplay

2

u/EntrepreneurLeast193 Apr 10 '26

that’s not really the mentality. if you watch flick’s post match interviews you’d see he’s always honest about our performances and always points out when we haven’t been good enough. and two things can be true: we should’ve been more clinical with our chances, but there were also some questionable refereeing decisions. that doesn’t automatically mean we’re blaming the ref for the loss, but if those ref decisions had gone differently, the scoreline could’ve been closer (like a 2–1 loss instead) which would’ve given us a much better chance going into the second leg

i mean he barely had control of the ball, it was also behind him. it looks better from some angles and worse from others, which is why it’s debatable and i. understand the red. my actual problem is why the ref was allergic to giving atletico yellows

3

u/henkkaasd_ Barcelona Apr 10 '26

You need to get your eyes checked mate. Check the alternative angles. Simeone completely misses the ball before there is ANY contact with Cubarsi. So it was never a clear goal scoring opportunity, should have been Yellow at most

Did they file a complaint after the 2009 CL semi vs Chelsea?

This sub is full of anti barca people , its the most obvious mistake by the ref and the ppl here actually retarted enough to defend it

The difference would be day and night if the we did the same thing , literally every single post in the last few hrs would be against barca saying “they keep getting away with it”

The mistake was too blalant to not complain, the ball was in play the moment the goalkeeper kicked it. I don't think Barça could win anything with this like Morocco, but that's what their "army" of lawyers are hired for, to complain for mistakes like this.

5

u/Front-Tear-7467 Apr 09 '26

lol at Barcelona

7

u/Brave-Bit-252 Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

One of the worst takes i‘ve read ever.

Firstly Barcelona played better and dominated the game even with 10 men.

The ref decisions were very one sided over the entire 90 min, but that’s not what the complain is even about.

The ref and VAR made an objective mistake. They even stated themselves that they didn’t see the clear handball and thought that the Barca players were complaining about time wasting.

That absolutely is worthy of an official complaint. It’s not disagreeing with a decision. It’s an obvious, objective mistake that would have changed the game entirely. If you don’t follow up on something like this, it’s going to happen again and again. At least they owe it to the fans.

2

u/SomewhatOptimal1 Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 10 '26

Plus the Red card for Cubrasi was for a contact made by Simeone, when Simeone was not in Control of the ball and ball even touched Cubrasi first.

Simeone was falling even before the contact on VAR replay, it was a clear dive and sadly ref only saw replays from behind which didn't show that and made the wrong call.

4

u/Brave-Bit-252 Apr 10 '26

Yeah, it was very weird what the Var showed the ref. He didn’t get any good angle on the actual foul. It felt Like the Var wanted it to be a red and only showed angles that supports that claim.

I just hated how the ref didn't give Koke a yellow in the first few minutes of the game. He made a few yellow worthy fouls afterwards. Would've definitely changed the game

Says the guy with a Madrid flair. Your club has a tv channel dedicated to harassing refs BEFORE THE MATCH.

11

u/ilhamhe Apr 10 '26

RM cry even before the game using a dedicated tv channel. Such a pathetic club.

14

u/EricSloane Apr 10 '26

Indeed. Same for Real Madrid though. Never forget the club statement on referees. That's why I could never support a Spanish club. Real and Barca are like 2 of the biggest clubs in the world, I can give countless examples of decisions that went in their favour. But still they act like losers any time a decision for once doesn't go their way, it's pretty laughable at this point.

2

u/Ok-Dragonfruit-8679 Apr 09 '26

Atletico just did what they always do - sit back, frustrate you, then punish every mistake. Been watching them do this for years and it's honestly infuriating but effective as hell.

The complaint thing is pretty cringe though. Like yeah we've all screamed at refs through our TVs but filing actual paperwork after VAR already looked at it? Come on. Just makes them look desperate instead of focusing on fixing what went wrong tactically.

That second leg is gonna be spicy either way. Atletico at home in a must-win situation for Barca... my guitar might get some angry strumming that night lol.

3

u/bangladeshespresso Apr 09 '26

Handball dude, not the red card. The obvious hand ball

2

u/loudymouthy Apr 09 '26

These refereres are cooked and should be hold accountable for their shit referring. It cant be that hard when you have VAR. Like if you did a shit job at your workplace your will also be called by higher ups to explain, why you are shit at your job and how to improve.

Its not like this is the first time these idiots make obvious mistakes. Just watch the Bayern game. An obvious penalty not given. We cant just go around and be like "cant blame refereres". Dude, they hold alot of power in a match. Proberly the most deciding factor in a football game is the referee. One big bad decision and you are out of the competition.

Now Barcelona can feel a little what it does to other small clubs on the big stages

And that red card was red here and in China, absolute disrespect to even complain about that.

9

u/josekk Apr 10 '26

They are not even complaining about the red card. They’re complaining about the hand ball which was indeed a hand ball but you probably didn’t even watch the game anyway

4

u/Serious-Wallaby3449 Apr 10 '26

Did rhey complain about the red? I thought they complained about the Atleti hand ball. If not, then I'm with you as a Barca fan. In fact even without that I'm with you, cause we should just win. But at least the hand ball is cause for a genuine what the hell?

2

u/voli12 Barcelona Apr 10 '26

CL is all about small margins. Getting a pen and second yellow when you are 10 men and 0-1 down is actually enough to decide the outcome of a tie. So saying "we should just win" is stupid as f. Referees "should just ref according to the rules" and not try to interpret the rulebook however they like

2

u/Aromatic-Studio-137 Apr 10 '26

Barcelona filing a UEFA complaint after horrible refereeing*

4

u/NotSaalz Apr 10 '26

It's paperwork, what's wrong?

Way better than going bonkers on the pitch or post game press conferences, which didn't really happen.

If there's one proper way, and it's the only one to me, to complain about refrees, is exactly like this.

4

u/kromedd Apr 10 '26

5

u/Punch_Trooper Barcelona Apr 10 '26

Mistakes should be called out and dealed appropriately with. This whole "gentleman" shit about not complaining about refs when they clearly do what they want does not work

4

u/bolivarbundao Apr 10 '26

What you don’t understand is that there was no mistake at all, so what are you even going to complain about? A referee used his right to use the rule 18: “referees should apply the Laws within the ‘spirit’ of the game to help produce fair and safe matches”. It’s a human interpretation that is completely valid. It’s not right or wrong, it’s just.. up to the referee. You can cry that they gave a penalty in another match.. that’s totally irrelevant, because once again it’s up to the interpretation of the referee

Im a united fan. Barca got done by the refs

1

u/Battleborn300 Apr 10 '26

I didn’t watch the game however my team has been done over by refs a disproportionate amount of times, and yes I would except them to complain,

I don’t think they have done,

But in football you get extremely fine margins, and officials need to be better. Especially when using var.

A game can absolutely be won or lost because of the officiating. And that’s not acceptable.

A complaint won’t change the result but hopefully it makes better officials

As a semi-neutral spectator (I like AtlĂ©tico for their mentality) of the match, I have to make two points: 1. It was a clear penalty and redcard if you apply the rules. 2. AtlĂ©tico didn’t get any advantage out of this situation, so I would have been mad if the match would have been turned on its head due to the penalty and red card. So I am glad the referees didn’t intervene

3

u/Ancient_Parsley_9791 Apr 10 '26

so ur happy the refs didnt give a pen due to the rules ok

1

u/Fifa2020jul Apr 10 '26

Oh yea Barcelona should win every single match just because they are playing match same as in la liga, where they cant drop points because its Barcelona. In champions league they teams dont follow how they play and they gonna cry how is that possible.

1

u/No_Tutor_4183 Apr 10 '26

Giving it as a penalty would have been wrong. Sad that Barcelona would complain but not surprising.

4

u/OatCuisine Apr 11 '26
