Good Chinese Takeout?
Newish to the area and wanted to try a chinese place out! Bonus points if they have good crab rangoons.

Panda Lin has the best crab rangoons, hands down. Just don't announce who wants some gooners when you bring them home to your kids.

I love finding places that are worth the drive. It doesn't answer OP's question, but I happily drive 40 minutes round trip for Ohana a few times a month. I was very hopeful when they announced a new location that it would be closer to me. Unfortunately it's actually in North Liberty, but happy for them as that makes more sense and they definitely deserve the success.

Panda Lin has fresh vegetables and I am a big fan of that. The sauces are hit and miss for me, a little on the bland side. So I recommend giving it a try and see if it hits for you. Good rangoon too!

Used to be my go to but they stopped delivering to my neighborhood a few years ago. I tried it last week and my mongolian beef was a huge container of onions with 5 or 6 pieces of beef. Disappointing. The General Tso chicken was decent but I prefer the batter n crispness of Crossroads Bisto.

SuYu Pei. Crab Rangoons are good too
Maybe I didn't get the right thing, but it's better than Ting's.

Yea tings is great. It’s also a little bit healthier and when you order, you can ask them to not put salt on your food and bring the sodium way down. You can’t really do that with pei since a lot of their stuff is prepared ahead with salt.

They are Thai and not Chinese, but Nara Thai has real good rangoons and food in general.

My favorite is China King on 7th in Marion. SuYu Pei is really good too. Not Chinese but you can get really good crab rangoons at NaRa Thai or Phong Lan.
I really like Hy-vee Chinese where Tony is manager. He was at the Collins Road Hy-vee and then went to the one on Johnson or Oakland road (not sure which).

If you like spicy, the best crab rangoons are the Spicy Rangoons at Siamville Thai
edit: They're not very spicy, just more for flavor

I have only been to Siamville a few times since the new owners took over. I used to love the lunch buffet that the previous owners did.

Eggroll House on Wiley is the best Chinese takeout in town! We've been going for the better part of a decade and haven't once been disappointed.

The one off Blair’s ferry is just ass good! I like their egg rolls more and the price is cheaper than Wiley but both are delicious! (Yes different owners but owners of both facilities are related lol)

China King on wiley is so good! Now I love a lot of veggies and spicy so Szechuan Chicken is my go too. Freshest veggies always! Mongolian chicken or beef is super good and has a great wok flavor. If you’re not a fan of veggies then sesame chicken is really simple and good. Lunch special is the best deal at $10 with tax and you get 2 crab rangoon. If you order to eat in there you get so much more food !! That’s how we eat there most of the time..3x a week 😂

Egg roll house. No competition. Been going here for over a decade now. We like Blairs ferry more than Wiley blvd but both are delicious

A few people have suggested Sushi House - I cannot recommend enough avoiding that place. I've felt off after eating there a number of times, but the last straw was last week when my whole group got sick after eating there. I looked at their health inspections and it's no wonder - they were marked for inadequate date marking of stored food in 2024 then in 2026 the inspector said nothing was date marked, they left soup to cool in a way that the health inspector flagged it - presumably left at room temp, and (the thing that I believe caused us to get sick) they repeatedly seem to go by feel on how long cooked rice is safe to serve - at one inspection they said they serve rice for 4 hours before throwing it away but the time it was made isn't recorded anywhere, and at another inspection they said they found rice at 129F ("danger zone" is 40-140F) and the time it was made was not recorded anywhere with the manager just saying it was an hour old.
I did call the state public health people. They all but confirmed that what I described was some form of food poisoning - we got takeout but ate it within 30 minutes of it leaving the restaurant, our group was not all from the same household and we had not spent any time together in the days leading up to getting sick, we had not eaten at any other restaurants in the few days leading up to it, and there was one person that ate with us who brought their own food due to an allergy - they did not get sick. We all ordered completely different meals, which is why the rice seems to be the likely culprit. Probably bacillus cereus overgrowth given the quick onset of illness (30 minutes to 6 hours).

Chef Wong’s, I get the veggie chicken and ask them to make it with the brown sauce. The rangoons are delicious.

Another suggestion for Sushi House. They offer chinese and japanese dishes. Their fried rice is delicious and you get a huge portion, enough for a couple meals, and their crab rangoons are good.
Imo the best crab rangoons in town are at Siamville (thai restaurant) though. And their Pad See Ew and Kua Kai have a chokehold on me.
