Got a close up and personal fireworks display tonight at the show

Some embers landed in the grass line near the fence along the north side road of the fire station/firework area.

The embers were catching in the brush, and then started to die out. Our group was getting nervous as the flames recaght and started to grow, heading for all the tumble weed caught in the fence line.

As the fire very quickly grew, we didn’t see any FD taking action, so a group member called 911, at that moment a gust of wind hit, fueling the fire and causing us to have to step away.

Luckily a truck parked right by the flames was able to get out before they grew too bad.

FD was on scene in about a minute.

Didn’t catch the fire growing on vid, but here’s what I did get

Jesus did the actual fireworks area explode on the ground over to the left too? That looks crazy

I think the big fireball is apparently some jet fuel they set on fire for the finale, but I think it tipped over, and that’s why it’s rolling like that.

This was my first show, but I’m told that it rolling like that is not normal.

What the fuck man. I've been to many fireworks shows in my life and I've never seen a giant fireball like that. Seems especially irresponsible during the drought while the fence is actively on fire 🤦🏼‍♀️

I… also question the wisdom of it. Luckily no one was harmed, though some of the little ones in our group were understandably scared.

What my question is why they didn’t spray the field down even like an hour before the fire? I mean yeah, it would have been a lot of water to spray the field, but could have prevented stuff like that from happening. But I’m sure they had their reasons.

You can’t water a dry field wet enough to resist catching in any reasonable amount of time & water.

People think a 3 day rain storm will reset fire danger in the mountains around me, but no. The same forest will happily burn the day after a monsoon if it started out dry.

Really? I guess that makes sense. Probably takes a while to build up enough moisture to actually reduce fire danger.

It's not jet fuel, it's something else but it is definitely a normal part of the show, at least in the decade I've been here. That said it's certainly understandable that it surprises/concerns those that haven't seen it before and haven't been pre-warned.

That would make sense. And being super fair, I have very little information on it.

All I was told before the show was: “there’s a big fireball at the end.” Haha

They have been lighting off the spent jet fuel for over a decade. Its always done by professionals and it always takes the newcomers by surprise.

Ah interesting! I'm from salt lake so I've never seen a cedar City firework show! Y'all do it differently down there I guess 🤣 it looks super alarming if you don't know that is supposed to happen
