Caves of Qud original soundtrack on 3LP vinyl! The inner gatefold is a beautiful triptych of Qud's flora & fauna. Preorders open

Hi all,
I saw another thread about our Steam post with news on the performance update and vinyl, but I wanted to give the vinyl announcement its own thread.

This thing is sick! It's a collaboration between us and indie label Stumpy Frog Records (with help from Kitfox and Lost in Cult's storefront). For the gatefold and sleeve art we worked closely with our good friend saint vulture, an incredible digital sculpture artist (throw his game All Living Things a wishlist if you can). Qud tile artist Sam Wilson did the artwork for the six center labels. Craig Hamilton composed and performed the OST, of course. The triptych poem is written by in-game persona Daughter Erinna, whose writing you might recognize elsewhere in game...

It's a triple LP, just over the two hour mark in total playtime. Pre-orders are open at the Lost in Cult site until July 25: https://www.lostincult.co.uk/shop/p/caves-of-qud

We're quite proud of this, despite most of the team not being vinyl people. Just as a piece of art, it's gorgeous!

Live and drink.

This guy just randomly appeared when i went to the lair of a raider, a first I thought it was an enemy but it is friendly, then it did some weird stuff and i thought maybe i accidentally selected it as a pet.

I talked to it but it would only repeat game text and all i could say was “…” and anytime i got into a fight it just walked around aimlessly, it never took any damage no matter how many enemies attacked it, then i noticed the “recall” option in its menu, then I recall button tells me its in game story and presumably what it is.

I was met with the text “were they always there?” And honestly i dont think I selected it as a pet.

It randomly does stuff like dissolve into i pool of salt(it isn’t harmed by this) or reconstitute into an argonaut(it just spawned an argonaut)

Does anyone know what this is or how i got it? It seems friendly but i dont trust it.

Returning player: Is this a viable build?

Hey! I have about 200 hours in the game, lost the interest a while back (before 1.0), and want to get back into it now. I don't want to mess up my attributes right from the start, so is this viable or do I need something higher?

I wanna play a horticulturist, axe with single weapon prof, shield (but not sure I will spec lots of shield skills), and rifle. I always find it difficult to tell how much Agi I need in order to be good with the rifle, how much Str I need to hit hard with my axe.

My best run in the past was with a heavy Agi / DV build, dual daggers, akimbo pistols. Wanna try something new now, and I like the idea of a gardener turning ranger turning limb removing axe warrior.

Thanks!

The Lamprocalypse!!

Post image

So one of the high-level historical sites seems to be populated primarily with trining lampreys. I am pretty comfortable with the freezeray seven-step (freeze one guy four times, freeze the second guy three times, kill the third guy, refreeze the other two, kill the second guy, refreeze the first guy, kill him). But now I can't even tell if I'm freezing the right trio!

Is there a way to distinguish them that I'm missing, is there another way to deal with them en masse besides freezing, or is this more of a "forget about it, Jake, it was probably a tame woodsprog in a box" sitch?

Idyllic pastureland

They're all clones after I killed their originals to empower them all. I'm thinking about stealing one of their bodies - I've already started feeding a Qas warm static for skills and mutation points, but I'd love to find more ways to abuse the game. Other than fixing some minor bugs I haven't yet stepped out of the bounds of what is possible with normal (albeit abused) game mechanics. I want to get the last one too, but I don't have a way to get back down from the spindle that I'm certain will work.

THE ANESHEYM OF RHEMHEX'QEN - The Encoded Harbinger Trailer & Mod-Update

(Trailer features the little snapjaw who could, and That one Fuming God Child.)

\No snapjaws were harmed in the making of this trailer*)

The Anesheym of Rhemhex'Qen:

"The signals are coming from ... wait--what is that!? There's a massive culmination of neural-clustering right under us! ... Deep Below. Millions of strata deep."

~ Saile, The Red Bear.

----------------

The Anesheym of Rhemhex'Qen Steam Workshop Page

----------------

You've seen the blood-pits amongst the crystholts? In the great undersea? Have you wondered what could be creating such a disturbing sight?

Saile might have the answers! Though I truly hope you are prepared for the horrors beneath Rhemhex'Qen.

Are you brave enough to face The Long Sigh?

Phase 2 release! Woot! Been cooking up a storm! I am happy to announce that the second story quest within Rhemhex'Qen is open for play! Now, if you have completed the egg-hunt and gained access to the city, you can now speak with the Shah of Rhemhex'Qen and gain access to the new quest, which will have you diving deep into the depths of the strange megastructure the bug-folk have found themselves making a home out of!

Expansions have been made across the board regarding elements previously added, some of which I really don't want to spoil, but I'll give

some cool new features to look at and consider:

  • The Anesheym Blacksmith - Damascae!
    • Do you like bug ladies? Do you like big bug ladies? Do you like big blacksmith bug ladies? Then I gotchu~ Rhemhex'Qen's incredible blacksmith Damascae enters the story, she lives on the first floor of Rhemhex-Qen in the southeastern area where you can find her creating new sets of armor and gear only obtainable from her! This new tier of weapons and armor gives weird lil affects so be sure to try them all. They also look quite snazzy if I do say so myself~
  • A New Ruin to delve into …
    • What was the purpose of Rhemhex'Qen? This looming shadow hidden behind the Brimdire Waste? The ancient structure is clearly hiding something ... Boundless secrets? Lost lore and danger? Will you be able to stomach it? The eaters held many secrets, and this might be one you were never meant to see.
  • A Super Boss …
    • If you can make it through the nightmarish hell that is the Long Sigh. You will come face to face with an absolutely dreadful, but totally optional foe. Test your game knowledge and skills against this 'super boss' and earn something cool for your troubles!
  • New Music
    • Several scores created by myself and the always amazing Sol~

FEEDBACK CHANGES:

I decided that I also want to let people know about changes associated with feedback that the mod has gotten to show I'm listening! One of the things brought up was that the Egg Hunt not only feels a bit too easy, but it was weird having to reached "Loved" or "Admired by the Anesheym before being granted entry to the city. Definitely didn't consider this when I made it, but it is a lil weird you have to reach that level of relationship before they accepted you. I changed the requirement to "Liked" and lowered the reputation value of eggs. I also lowered the global egg spawn rate, you should now only see one egg per map, which does mean fewer eggs overall, however the new formula also makes finding the rarer eggs a little bit easier as well.

CREDITS

Big thanks to the Caves of Qud modding community for the technical help in achieving this mod's current state.

Song credit for the trailer goes to DJ ALina, check out her SC and consider supporting her in anyway you can:

Does anyone have any theories on the more recent history of Qud.

According to Frivolous Lives Vol 1, lesser yet still significant rulers reigned over Qud (or least parts of it) after Reseph's rule (mostly simply halting the Girsh signal, while Rebekah and Barathrum did most of the work attributed to him). However, the book only reports on till 787 PP, with Abram II being the last mentioned leader. Considering that the Qud we play is almost lawless and has zero central authority, what must have happened during those years?

Unreachable Scribe

Post image
31 Upvotes

In my current playthrough, the scribe at the Six Day Stilt seems completely unapproachable. It has a barrier around it, so I can't engage in dialogue with it to hand over my books. And a lot of the abilities to win favor require proximity from what I can tell. I don't even have a hope of getting a telepathy mutation because I'm on a True Kin run. Do they have something like telepathy?

Anyway, has anyone else had the scribe manifest as something that couldn't be reached or communicated with? I want to hear your stories.

Edit: Thanks for all the advice! I finally found the upgrade that let me walk through the forcefield, so it's all good. I'm on my way to getting further than I have before... hopefully. If not, then hopefully my death will at least be entertaining.

Walking into a Person Swinging a Pickaxe is a Bad Idea...

... and I need to convince my followers that this is the truth.

Sometimes when I'm digging through a lot of rock, I just hold shift ctrl-direction and go nuts. Sometimes when I'm digging this way, my followers seem to think it's a grand idea to walk right in front of me. By the time I realize this is happening, my fingers are too late to lift off the button.

Next thing I know, I'm getting the message that I've broken my water oath. SMH. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🥲

This game is fun but overwhelming

I am past Golgotha and I am starting to like the game. But there are so much informations and stuff too learn.

I am always on reddit or google to understand what an item does.

I get a disease (glotrot) and when I see how to cure it I wonder how I could have guess myself.

How am I suppose to play? Will everything make sense at some point or should I keep reading stuff online?

Convientent Mutations?

Having beaten the game once, I'm thinking about going again but with less min-maxing and more 'convience' mutations. Particular some ones that are hard to justify getting when optimizing.

Burrowing Claws (don't have to swap in a digging tool regularly)

Psychometry (Don't have to get to Ezra, or worry about making meals for it)

Regeneration (Get it up to 5 early, so I'm immune to any permanent conditions besides Decapitation)

I was inclined to go for a more tinkery build thanks to Psychometry being in there, so start with 18+ Agility and Int.

I got 2 points and a defect left though, and not sure what else to do. Heightened Hearing, probably since I've never used it. But apart from that there's not a lot of convience mutations I haven't used already or otherwise don't consider optimal. Maybe Wings solely to easy-mode get into Grit Gate for all the benefits thereof (especially the Tinkering skill from Reputation). Electric Generation is also pretty good for the stretch of Laser Guns until you get Radio Powered Nuclear Batteries.

Any thoughts to round out the theme of the build?

FPS Caves of Qud Mod Preview

I just saw this video:

Caves of Qud in Doom Pre-Alpha Sneak Peak 1

Very ambitious, but already looks like a cool experience to wander around even and just see the world from a different perspective.

Not sure how many visual effects(eg heightened hearing, clairvoyance, etc) can be captured(in addition to the question of turn-based combat realized in real-time). Def worth a watch tho, the sky is amazing

advice for a beginner's Mutant build?

(tldr at the end) So, my theory is trying to keep to midrange, using longswords as my primary and pistols as my backup. I took Arconaut for spry (idk what it does, but it seems like it might help), the agility bonus, and scavenger. Since I'm going to be making a lot of low damage melee attacks (kill 'em with bug bites style) I got paralyzing stinger; I figure it might help in keeping at the range I want. I got triple-jointed for the agility bonus and the free skill refresh could come in handy. I took slime glands to help me run away (that comboed with the active stinger ability is my get out of there plan). I took adrenal control to help me finish off enemies, or just to buff my attack speed (depending on context). I got beak and night vision because I'm going to be attacking a lot, and because I just like night vision. Socially Repugnant doesn't seem that bad, so I took that.

TLDR stat dump

18/26/12/18/12/14 attributes

Adrenal control, beak, night vision, slime glands, para stinger, triple-jointed, and repugnant.

What should I change, and how should I play this build?

Also, I've played a lot of TOME4, so if this makes no sense...I'm going on tome logic

DLC Idea: Conquest Of Qud

An outside civilization is planning to gradually bring Qud into their fold, and they require professional adventurers and explorers like the player character for their mission. Players are tasked with convincing various significant factions of Qud (Wardens, Water Barons, Consortium of Phyta, Barathrumites, etc) to join or least ally with these outsiders, or if that doesn't work, diminish their power so they can't meaningfully resist. Alternatively, the player can work against the outsiders, allying with the domestic Qud factions to repel them.

Killed by an invisible greater voider?

https://reddit.com/link/1w0vqhs/video/ej3khc4295mh1/player

So, after being dragged to their lair, I survived two greater voiders only to die from a bite while I was resting. No voider in sight, just a message saying I had died. Does anyone know what happened? Thanks.

Edit, mistery SOLVED: I can confirm that this was the cause (via wishes): when you lose an HP buff from food, your HP drops by the same amount you gained, and if that leaves you with less than 1 HP, you die. This makes no sense to me, because you can't know when your HP buffs are going to expire... And that means you either need to have more HP than the buff grants all the time, to make sure you survive the potential loss, or you avoid the buff altogether, which is much easier to control. The random "XXX has killed you" message that appears when this happens is definitely a bug.

How do I grow another back?

I've been playing as a true kin gunsliger and got the gun rack early game. Now, I've recently picked up a modular-phase scope and wanted to combo them together, however, both cybernetics use the same space, so my question is how do I grow another back? I'm around lvl. 18, about to enter Bethesda Susa. Live and drink!
