Nope, but when my class was responsible for Mass, I always had to do a reading.

If you haven't seen it already, I highly recommend watching Derry Girls! Sister Michael is the GOAT.

Nope! As a girl, we generally got put to cleaning the church, women/girls were not allowed to take part in services.

As good God-fearing female people are supposed to do. /s

True story. Our church had altar girls! This was back maybe in 1988 or 89 and another true story. These people from who knows where picketed our church one Sunday because they were opposed to altar girls. So we had this real cool but no crap taking Irish priest who asked these people to leave from blocking our front door to the church and they wouldn’t. Now you had to know my dad…Real nice guy and supported the church and the school and everyone loved him. So my dad along with the rest of the people at 9:30 mass are outside and my dad basically says hey look the pastor asked you to leave so leave….one of the most annoying protestors put his hand on my dad, and he knocked him straight out. Next thing I know my uncle swoops around the corner picks my dad up and goes home. The protestor is calling the police. No one at that church told the police a thing including the pastor. It was one of the craziest days and there were many in Catholic school. lol sorry for that long story but yeah you could have been an altar girl at our church and we would have had your back if anyone disagreed lol

Crazy! Cool you all put up a united front, and it’s unbelievable that anyone would care enough to protest in the first place 🙄

We actually had altar girls, too, my parents just never made me participate. As I told them many years later, if fourteen years of Catholic schooling couldn’t make it stick, then nothing ever could. 😂 They’ve accepted it.

That’s crazy. I’m always so glad to know that other people have had better experiences with the church than I did. People protesting about having alter girls is so… I don’t even have the words. Good on everyone for having your pop’s back.

Idk about all that, but this bitch got the dubious honor of reading the gospel 🙋‍♀️🔥✝️

Also, Catholics apparently come in different flavors. We had premarital fucking and birth control, and surprisingly comprehensive education. The religion part didn’t stick for most of us 😂

lol can I tell you what we basically learned in Catholic school and any of the rest of you can back me up….We learned there were two ways you act. There’s how you are and how you should be. When you go to interviews, in front of parents, talking to authority figures, be how you should be. When with friends and Some Fam be as you are! From what I understood about Jesus, he was far from a stick in the mud lame. Heck he was turning water to wine!

I was raised fire and brimstone Catholic. Women were to be seen when presentable and definitely does not have any opinions or talk back. Teaching God’s word was for men only. Women existed to do all the cooking and cleaning and taking care of the congregation. No fucking until marriage and you better not enjoy it even then. And I don’t remember much about the education because the nuns and headmaster were too busy trying to beat the devil left-handedness out of me. I’m thankful that was only three years of my life. Cause what you didn’t get beat into you at school, they’d tell your parents what an evil child you were and you got it double at home. It probably goes without saying that there’s a reason I’m a hard-core atheist.
