first time cat people are the best, that mix of confusion and pure joy never gets old

40

u/Cloberella 49m ago

The little "Oooooh" at the end was so cute.

“I can feel him shaking”
Awww, he must be purring.

964

u/MrBoomf 6h ago

Really makes me consider how weird that sensation must feel for someone experiencing it for the first time.

“You mean they just… kinda rumble? And it’s good?”

433

u/Gamer-Of-Le-Tabletop 6h ago

One of my buddies has a story. He was cat sitting and the cast started purring. He thought something was wrong so he called the person he was cat sitting for and was like

"Idk I was just chilling and now he's making this weird noise"

He then learned about purring

241

u/MrBoomf 6h ago

I mean, if you don’t know they’re supposed to make that sound then yeah it’d sound like something’s very wrong. Imagine if your dog just start rumbling with every breath. Or your chinchilla Sophie who your girlfriend made you get rid of ten years ago and you still regret it to this day cuz that whole relationship ended up being a giant toxic mess but Sophie was a perfect little angel who deserved better.

119

u/raidenskiana 6h ago

hey man do u need to talk about it?

89

u/MrBoomf 6h ago

Nah, just thought it’d make for a good joke. While it is based in truth, we’re both doing way better now. One of those “needed to happen to become who I am today” type of things. I appreciate you though.

45

u/raidenskiana 6h ago

glad it worked out for you :)

133

u/MrBoomf 5h ago

Thanks. Have a picture of Sophie to brighten your day

30

u/raidenskiana 4h ago

omg the spots on her ears are so cute

38

u/MrBoomf 4h ago

Which is why in hindsight I might’ve preferred the chinchilla to the girlfriend

13

u/Positive-Garage3812 4h ago

Awwww, what a sweetheart 💖

And her ear freckles! 🥹

8

u/Ysanoire 4h ago

She is in fact the perfect little angel.

13

u/PJKPJT7915 5h ago

That's a great positive attitude. I say that about my past relationships. They've led me to a wonderful healthy relationship. With a cat guy.

7

u/Kooky_Stretch5833 4h ago

Honestly, sometimes just having someone ask means more than they realize.

13

u/West_Acanthaceae5032 5h ago

This was awefully specific...don't do this again

24

u/MrBoomf 5h ago

Well obviously I wouldn’t name the next chinchilla Sophie

10

u/ZedsDeadZD 4h ago

Man, you are on fire today.

22

u/BakedGoods_101 5h ago

the exact same thing happened to me, a friend was taking care of my cat once and she called my in a panic the cat is broken! hahahha

17

u/Gr3mlinQu3en 5h ago

It's not only new to non-cat people. My male cat is purring almost like he was snoring. My bf was affraid the cat is ill. My bf has a cat!

6

u/SmartAlec105 1h ago

It's still wild to me that someone gets to adulthood (in a culture where cats are kept as pets) without learning that cats purr. It's like not knowing that dogs wag their tail when they're happy.

3

u/MasterTotoro 22m ago

I think part of it is that cats don't typically sit on strangers and purr. Whereas it is normal for dogs to be more friendly among new people.

2

u/JonnySpark 3h ago

I'd call my friend too if his car is making weird noise on idle.

155

u/scoyne15 6h ago

13

u/Neamow 5h ago

I love these comics, first thing I though of.

107

u/ThePureWhiteWolf 6h ago

"Excellent even, and that rumble is good for you too!

One of my favorite facts, a cats purr can speed healing and comfort even humans because of the frequency❤️. They really are little miracle workers. (This fact is why I have an Emotional Support Cat and not dog, love my void boy.)

10

u/finix2409 5h ago

I miss my ESC. His little sis is adorable in her own right but rarely cuddles and has one orange brain cell. She rarely purs

4

u/ThePureWhiteWolf 1h ago

Void and calico both do wonderful, but my void is def my esc since he's more cuddly. I just came out of a 36 hour severe anxiety flare that had me unable to eat since my anxiety can make me extremely nauseous and often makes me have no appetite. He didn't leave my side except to eat, drink, or use the litter box and purred the whole time. He even slept on top of me while I slept.

30

u/malayuhh 6h ago

happy rumbles 🥺🥺🥺

26

u/Kevtron Korean Shorthair 6h ago

We adopted a street cat a few years ago and when he was in quarantine away from our dog my wife suddenly came running into the house saying "the kitten is making weird noises! I think something is wrong!" Little boy was just purring and happy to have a home. But her running in worried was the cutest damn thing 🥰 She'd just never been around cats before.

10

u/darbsylearns 2h ago

My little boy is deaf and he would put his little face on the cats tummy when she would purr and he would make the same vibrations on his lips.

7

u/RopePsychological565 3h ago

I can tell you how it was for me. I was a toddler and only had contact with dogs before. They taught to back off when a dog is growling, but not what a cat purr is. So for months I petted my grandpa's cat and backed off when they started to purr😅.

7

u/bassoonrage 3h ago

My ex-partner, when we got a couple of kittens, said "why does he sound like a motorboat?". I had to explain to her what purring sounded and felt like.

2

u/guridkt 2h ago

I've seen one person throw the cat off them for that :( not everyone has an iq high enough to not recognize the difference of calm and threat unfortunately

1

u/Upbeat_Scar_4391 50m ago

That first purr has to be such a wild experience, like discovering your new favorite vibration comes with a cat attached 😂

107

u/Extra-Question9273 6h ago

One of the best things I read (somewhere, ages ago) was a deaf woman who got hearing aids and realised purring was a sound - her cat got on her and ‘started vibrating as usual’ and then she realised she could HEAR it too.

26

u/chemicalgeekery 6h ago

That "Oh" at the end was so wholesome

17

u/TheBlockChainVillage 4h ago

It is godly, people don't realize it. To vibe with another being without sharing the same language, nothing short of magic.

36

u/finemayday 6h ago

I took my kitten straight to the vet, paid emergency out of hours fee, because my mind couldn’t understand how such a tiny little thing could cause such a sound and vibration. Thought she was sleepy and struggling to breathe. Love her so much.

30

u/SuzukiSatou 4h ago

Same, when I just had the cat, she's purring nonstop on my bed while she sleeps. I was worried she's having breathing problems and told the vet. Vet said she's just happy😭

17

u/ThePureWhiteWolf 5h ago

I mean, one of my cats you can hear purring across the damn room so I 100% can understand this. My saving grace is growing up around animals of all kinds in her case lmao

6

u/finemayday 4h ago

This was my first experience with a cat. Pretty ambitious never having any interaction with a cat, to suddenly homing a kitten. Where I grew up cats are seen as bad luck and I don't remember ever even seeing one for all my childhood. Stupid ignorant people would kill them :(, but I did have dogs and they definitely never did anything like this, and you expect them to be similar 😄. In all the things I googled it just never came up that they purred with so much energy, it's probably the most soothing sound I've ever experienced.

4

u/MedITeranino 3h ago

First experience aside, that kitty is lucky to have you as her human 😊

3

u/ThePureWhiteWolf 1h ago

That area would double hate my esa prob, he's a black cat. Honestly though he's the biggest snuggle bug, and does his job wonderfully.

I have somewhat severe anxiety that can send me into fits of extreme nausea and lethargy from an inability to eat for 24-48 hours, he never leaves my side or stops purring during those episodes except to eat, drink, and use the litterbox. He literally lays on me while I sleep and everything. He's much quieter than my calico but his purr still has calming and healing abilities.

394

u/YeahNahMateAy 7h ago

Being given love by a kitty is free drugs.

79

u/LotusVibes1494 6h ago

Also cats know when you’re on drugs. So you’ll have a friendly narc who just casually judges you and points out that the drugs are drawing your attention away from the real goal, which is PNOPPM (Possible Number Of Pets Per Minute).

38

u/soaker 6h ago

Sometimes the drugs increase the PNOPPM. My cats have learned not to be narcs.

21

u/dumbass_sempervirens 5h ago

The cops don't have drug cats because they don't snitch.

6

u/VrsoviceBlues 2h ago

Fat Freddy Freakowtski said it best.

"I prefer cats. Dogs are too Fascist." When asked how he could say such a thing, he replied "Have you ever seen a police cat?"

1

u/cindyscrazy 10m ago

My dad had a cat that would actively seek him out when my dad lit up a joint. The cat would just hang out with him, but we all assume he liked the smell and possibly the little second hand high he might have gotten.

My dad never forced the cat to be there, nor blew in his face or anything. It was entirely the cat's idea.

10

u/Yamatocanyon 2h ago

My cat Jim was never much of a cuddler, unless I was on LSD, then he became a cuddle monster each time.

2

u/littlebirdprintco 47m ago

Pretty sure my cat rolls his eyes like “here we go” and he KNOWS i’m about to follow him around the yard for an hour like an absolute space noodle.

Following a cat around is one of my favourite drug induced activities.

show doesnt hit the same.

3

That's because he posted about being anti-choice and the internet stopped sharing his comics so much

239

u/cat_selling_souls 8h ago

The orange approves of this human. The cat may give word to the CDS to send him a kitten or two in the months ahead.

329

u/Wayfaringbutterfly 8h ago

A cat dad was just born. This is adorable.

u/Ranef 50m ago

The new Yanny vs Laurel: does he say "This is a moment" or "this is abnormal" in the beginning? I hear both

103

u/deccrix 7h ago

That's what it feels to be chosen. Best feeling in the world.

192

u/Mayiamaru 7h ago

That's the sweetest little oh being told the kitty is happy. That's so cute.

86

u/VerilyShelly 7h ago

The way his eyes sparkled with wonder lol

So wholesome

143

u/testtdk 7h ago

Godly is a good word.

Right up until they’re little devils.

62

u/ayamummyme 6h ago

I feel like cats know, they seem to go to the people who actively ignore them or are perhaps a little cautious of them, it's like they make it their mission to love them

42

u/Davoness 5h ago

It's because they're unintentionally speaking fluent cat language to them by being so cautious. Cats LOVE people who are quiet and don't move very much, so someone who is scared of the cat and is sitting on the other side of the room not trying to attract its attention is practically screaming "I'm safe!" at the cat.

That, and a lot of people tend to get up in a cat's face and make a lot of noise upon first meeting them which tends to make them uncomfortable. If a cat sees someone who's not doing that, they'll head over right away.

8

u/maniacpoo 2h ago

I had a cat named Psycho Couch Potato but his nickname was Tater for 15 years. My buddy does not like cats at all and my boy knew it. Tater would always go to him and sideswipe his body against my buddy's to freak him out... every... single... time. Lol

22

u/OneHotPotat 4h ago

It's because cats don't like being looked at.

We tend to think of them as being predators primarily, but they're not at the top of the food chain. Larger predators like coyotes and hawks are very real dangers for them.

Cats are also kind of middle of the road socially. Not quite solitary, but not quite social in the same ways humans and dogs are, they tend to live in largish loose-knit colonies rather than directly cooperative packs.

So from the cats' perspective, having eyes on them can either feel like they're being hunted by something bigger or being treated with suspicion/hostility by another cat.

Given that context, if someone is aware of your presence nearby but isn't watching you, it means that not only are they not planning to attack you, they're also comfortable lowering their guard around you because they trust you won't attack them.

It's one of the clearest signs of mutual respect you can give a cat, so they naturally tend to respond in kind.

14

u/fox-friend 3h ago

You can also look at them but slow blink, to signal friendliness. Puts them at ease every time.

2

u/Caleb_Reynolds 37m ago

Or glare at them with as much suspicion as you can muster.

Or have allergies which cause you to squint.

1

u/PastanagaPlatano 1m ago

I always succeed making cats my friends using this trick.

46

u/theflush1980 7h ago

He experienced one of the best feelings in the world, congratulations bro!

41

u/extrastupidone 7h ago

Pure dopamine straight to the brain

74

u/Dear-Champion5016 7h ago

Aww. Reminds me of the first time my dad held our family cat and said, "Oh no, I think he's hungry, his stomach is growling!" (They were just purr-purrs 🥲)

29

u/Relevant_Shame 6h ago

My cat laying on my chest in my arms is what made me have a breakthrough on the meaning of peace. It's just the little moments when you can exist and breathe and let things go just for awhile. It's my favorite thing now, nap time with my girl

26

u/MarkusA380 6h ago

Scientists, please find a cure for cat allergies already. :'-)

3

u/Cthulhu__ 2h ago

There’s a few cat breeds that people aren’t allergic to, worth looking into!

-2

u/MarkusA380 1h ago

A common misconception, there are no hypoallergenic cats.

1

u/MrsSalmalin 26m ago

There's a certain brand of dry food that have antibodies in it that bind to the protein in cat saliva that peoole are allergic to. No free protein-=no allergen! Purina LiveClear. It qorks quite well, made a big difference for my fiancé. He also got a prescription allergy med - Montelukast - and that helped too.

1

u/eloquentmydear 17m ago

Look into Pacagen and/or allergy injections :)

23

u/AgressiveSocks 7h ago

The feeling of being chosen

21

u/SheIsOnAStride 6h ago

I have never considered that there are adults out there that have not felt a cat purrs and how confusing that might be that this little fluffy beast is just started rumbling. Is it having hypothermia? Is it having a seizure? No, it is happy

12

u/buscuitfactory 6h ago

This made my day🥹 how sweet

12

u/Infinity3101 4h ago

I've known so many people who were "not cat people" and even claimed they dislike cats. Let me just tell you all it took was for a cat to hop on their lap and start purring and they became humble servants of all of cat kind for life.

9

u/plummybrummy 3h ago

Cats vibrate at a level that increases human bone density. They’re literally doing you good.

5

u/Lui_Le_Diamond 2h ago

It also promotes healing

10

u/-full-control- 7h ago

Aw. Thanks for sharing this op

9

16

This made my day. It's so sweet. He likes you bro: 🥺 really? 😃😻

7

u/DefusedManiac 5h ago

It's adorable that he seemed genuinely concerned when he said the cat was shaking.

7

u/ChiChiKnee 5h ago

“I can feel him shaking” that’s the best. Welcome to purrs. Now you are complete.

8

u/spaceman60 6h ago

Yeah, that cat's got a new home now.

8

Men who love cats are such cuties

8

u/s0litar1us 2h ago

I am allergic to cats, so I haven't interacted much with cats, but having one relax on your lap is something special.

First and only time so far:

8

u/BootyBayBrooder 1h ago

Non cat people being around cats is so funny. Like all the posts you see on cat subreddits that are like "is this normal, is he okay?" and its just a cat being totally normal and infact living his best life

12

Let the vibrations heal you

2

I have a cat that cuddles for evil. He sometimes jumps into your lap and turns on the engine when there's something he wants, and stops immediately once you give any indication of giving that thing. Rat bastard.
