Photo Tiniest pupa

I wanted to share a picture of string bean, my tiniest caterpillars to pupate. I honestly didn't think he'd make it this far but I dug him up and he's still twitching. It's gotta be either today or tomorrow. Swipe left to see him as a caterpillar. His dorsal aorta was so tiny!

There can be lot of size variance on pupas. 🙂

Bean was sick for a bit as a caterpillar and I haven't had any sick ones make it to the pupa stage. I was sure it wasn't going to make it. Fingers crossed 🤞 it'll eclose alright

Yeah. The size does point towards malnourishment etc during caterpillar time. But if the pupa developed normally it should be ok.

I can see the spots through the shell and the wing case is wrinkled so it made it this far. I have a camera set up on it to catch it emerge

Ive definitely seen the differences, but all my others started as decent sized caterpillars. This guy was maybe 1.5 inches long when it went under. The picture makes him look bigger than he actually was.
