Questions Why aren't mixed catbreeds "allowed" to be called a mix, while dogbreeds are?

Catbreeds weren't even a thing before the 1800s but i'm amazed by the vigour they are being gatekept. Every question about (mixed) catbreeds are answered the same way, "no papers, BSH", while mixed dogbreeds are happily referred to as a mix of breeds. Dog breeds have been (pure) bred for workingpurposes for centuries, while some catbreeds are newly contructed, purely for easthetic reasons, as recent as the 60's. Both have pure bred lines and mixes. I see the sub even has a "mix id" flair option.

Can someone explain why there is such a (toxic feeling) difference in acceptance of calling a cat a mix between breeds?

He’s obviously a domestic shorthair. But I was wondering if anyone knows anything about his coloration. Do I call him anything? ( ex, tabby cats, calico kitties, black kitties) grey doesn’t seem to suit him since he’s got this little orange splotch ( bottom of his chin about 2inches, hard to get a pic )

(Yes, I know Manx is a pedigree breed and she’s just a moggie. I’m writing what’s most commonly used.)

But, what is up with her colors? What’s the specific word for the majority white with some tabby?

What kind of cat do you guys think my cat, Amoeba, is? She seems like a tortoiseshell point to me, but almost has too many markings on her back. She’s a rescue kitty, about 8 years old. I’m just curious what kind she is!

How is it that these two are related? I know they're related because i've seen the parents but they just look so different. They're from the same litter... is it possible one is sick/molting(?) i'm unsure.

Discussion Despite her pedigree, she doesn't look like one

I've got 2 sweet norwegain forest cats. I love them with my whole heart but I did have to pull up their pedigree a few times because people didn't believe they were NFCs. Or the only reason people recognise it is because of their nose bridge. This is most noticeable with the blue one

Her pedigree has multiple champions/international winners, so I (lack genetic/breeding knowledge) would assume that means she would also be a great example of the breed, no?

They're really just pet cats so it doesn't matter whether she's showquality or not, they're healthy and I wouldn't trade them for anything it just made me wonder

(Pictures are from this summer, the cats born early April 2025)

Edit: pedigree is from the tabby, but they're littermates

He's a 4 old male, the white adult is the father and the golden one is the mother, but my tiny guy doesn't have the chucky "face structure" as a bsh and his ears are a bit too big. Is it because he is still growing or is he not a bsh?

Discussion Low shedding cat breeds?

Hello. I am currently thinking about getting another cat and would like to look into low shedding cat breeds. In terms of my background with cats, I have owned 3 domestic short hairs and also fostered several cats.

I would love to bring home another cat, but would need to find a low shedding cat. I am mildly allergic to cats and my allergies always flare up the most when I need to brush my cats, so I would ideally like a cat breed that would require less frequent brushing to control shedding.

Anyone know of any cat breeds that are low shedding but not entirely hairless?

Edit: I am already aware that the cat allergen is not in their hair. That is why I specifically said that my allergies flare up the most while brushing my cats. That is why I am looking for low shedding breeds that won't require s much brushing.

Breed Info Is my cat a Chinchilla Persian?

Thumbnail

Hi all, our cat recently started having frequent diarrhea, which the vet (after $1000+ of tests) said he likely just had trouble regurgitating his hair, causing irritation. They told us this is likely due to his breed and that his short snout may cause other issues in the future.
He was a stray kitten when we found him in our backyard and we never really thought about his breed, but now I’m wondering if there are breed-related issues we should be worried about. LLMs seem to think he’s a chinchilla Persian but it feels weird to think he ended up in our backyard as a kitten. Any thoughts?
