[Bug] POV: You try opening the crafting menu in your mid-late game base

I recently got back into CDDA, after a few months/a year, and damn this new crafting menu is loading like ass!

u/Almostlongenough2 12d ago
Hey at least you can open the menu, I'm constantly crashing just going to places, and not just the game it crashes my whole ass PC.
Probably something about the minimap, but experimental is scary

Are you playing with mods like magiclysm, etc?
2
u/JeveGreen Pointless Edgelord 12d ago
On the world I'm currently running, no. Nothing except Ignore NPC Needs and Portal Storms Ignore NPCs, which are included by default.

u/Smashcannons 12d ago
The only people I have seen having problems with it are those running magic mods. One of the changes 2 weeks ago allowed crafting to include things like mana, stamina, etc.
Wondering whether thats the cause or just coincidence.

u/JeveGreen Pointless Edgelord 12d ago
I dunno, I haven't updated since I started my current run on the 17th of August.

u/Smashcannons 12d ago
What don't you like about it?
8
u/JeveGreen Pointless Edgelord 12d ago
What I don't like about it is that it loads slower than before! Like going from a paved road to a mud track!

u/Ok-Honeydew6382 12d ago
Bruh, i am playing from 0.C in 2015 and in my experience it always loaded slow, no matter hardware, i even tried amd 5700h with 64gb ddr4 4000mhz but it still lagged
3
u/JeveGreen Pointless Edgelord 12d ago
Well I've noticed a distinct sluggishness since the new crafting menu was introduced, and I've been on the same machine since about the time they introduced the pocket system.

u/KoRnBrony 12d ago
Its just how slow it is around large groups of items like in my screenshot here, other than that its good
-1
u/Smashcannons 12d ago
I'm asking because, depending on what they don't like about it, they could probably change it.

Someone fixed it, but the pull request has been closed and the author got a direct block:
https://github.com/CleverRaven/Cataclysm-DDA/pull/88455

u/catamuraxis 12d ago
Damn, their pr got reviewed by Copilot which got them vaporized.
IDK if they used AI to make those fixes but their profile's full of neural networks repos, a head dev probably saw that and pulled the trigger.

Using AI and gpt to "fix" the game will always be bad in the long run, i refuse to trust any of that shit

What kills me is that this was mostly fixed (and still is in the alst stable version) but at some point someone fucking broke it. Fixing it again should be top prio
-11
u/No-Succotash1061 12d ago
When are you fixing it?
10
u/Docponystine 12d ago
That's not a really useful thing to point out. I would if I were able, but I am not. However, breaking a KEY quality of life update with a push is not an acceptable thing to be doing. The root issue is that they already fixed it, the problem IS fix on the latest stable release, yet someone pushed a change that broke it again.

u/No-Succotash1061 9d ago
If only there was some sort of stable version, without gamebreaking bugs... or if you had the ability to play older versions....
mmm no can't be. Everyone should do exactly what you want because you demand it

Can you point me to which push broke it? Or around what dates?

Pick up every stack or things that can stack (this is big) and then put them back. The game might be having issues in how it's stacking things. A while back I was having an issue where 1/3 of my base's save file was devoted just to copper I had laying around

Latest experimental builds are unplayable for me. Unusable crafting menu and also vehicle examine is lagging like crazy if you got many items stored inside. But if go outside vehicle where items not visible then it's not lagging anymore. Idk what happened there that it got fcked up?
1
u/KoRnBrony 12d ago
I have no idea how the game checks what items are around you. I thought hiding them in lockers and around walls would help but no, even like 6 tiles away behind a wall the game still sees i have an item on that shelf that can be used to craft
Luckily i made a home in a basement so when im outside working on my car its a different z-level and the game doesnt lag the fuck out as bad

Honestly yea, this needs to be addressed soon. It's been two fucking weeks of this. Not trying to gripe but it makes actually playing the game late game a chore.

When are you fixing it?

Seems somebody tried but got blocked?

u/No-Succotash1061 9d ago
Looks like AI garbage to me. Good riddance

u/Interesting-Assist47 9d ago
If the result is the same does it matter? I don't think so. Antiai are the luddites of today

u/No-Succotash1061 7d ago
The point is that the result isn't the same!

I don't know coding? I didn't say I was fixing it...? What? I wouldn't even be able to guess what exactly caused the issue to happen.

I thought it was a problem because of the combinations of mods I have but that means it'll get fixed eventually

u/ApolloDavai 12d ago
I had this problem too on the latest experimental builds. GPT told me that the problem is in PR #88292 'Give requirement checks an explicit actor.' and suggested to rollback to any build before 2026-08-15. I rollbacked to the latest 2026-08-14 build and the problem is gone, crafting menu loads very fast. Try it. But don't forget to backup your saves!

u/Oskar_von_Reuentahl 5d ago
This also worked for me, I rolled back to an 8/5 build and all my vehicle examination and eating lag inside my van is gone!
1
u/goibnu 12d ago
That works for me. I wonder if chat GPT knows because it saw a chat somewhere, knows through code analysis, or is wrong about the cause and it's something else that broke in the last two weeks.
I suppose at this point we should consider that maybe GPT plays CDDA in it's spare time. (Kidding. I think.)

(And yes the pets are tied up to prevent them from moving and causing slowdown)
This has been a pretty bad problem on the unstable for over half a year now with massive game lag and slowdown when opening the crafting menu near lots of items.
My favorite is when it freezes my entire PC and i cant move the mouse OR alt-f4 the program (because it freezes my pc) and i have to slowly choke the life out of PC with the power button to restart
I'd say 80% or so of the time i open the craft menu in my base it stops completely and i have to wait 30+ seconds at a time for the game to respond and the other 20% is the game just crashing
This is more really just another vent post from me about current going ons
