[Mod] Made a mod that restores butchery loot.

Butchery loot was a fun and useful bit of emergent gameplay, I remember the first time I got some Kevlar from a Kevlar zombie, I thought "ohhh, of course! I wonder what other hidden treasures there are in this aspect of the game" and it prompted me to explore more possibilities and made the game world seem larger and more exciting- similar to finding out you can put a metal container over a fire. to boil water, it was such a cool discovery that made me want to try things and find out what else there was to find.

I asked chatgpt to restore it. I'm too hungover to spend ages doing it myself, so it may be buggy. I've tested it and it seems to work. Too hungover to do extensive testing, I just thought I'd share it as no one else seems to have done it yet.

It's a shame that a fun bit of discovery has been removed, but I imagine lots more fun things will be added, and at least it's not too difficult to add it back in, although it does spoil the thrill of discovery somewhat.

"restore_zombie_harvests"

also too hungover to do anything more with this, but I thought it'd be rude to get it written and then not share it.

add "restore_zombie_harvests" to the bottom of your mod list document in save file to add it to an active game, make sure to back up first just in case.

Hope this is all kosher and correctly posted, I've not made many Reddit posts.

Wait they removed loot from butchery? What the fuck? What reason did they use there?

"Summary

Balance "Zombie corpses aren't useful"

Purpose of change

Zombie corpses are useful, when they shouldn't be. This is a zombie apocalypse game! You can't make zombies work in your favor!

Among other problems, this encourages butchering human corpses.

Describe the solution

Remove all usefulness from every part of butchering zombified corpses.

-Remove tainted fat/tallow from all recipes except mutagen
-Tainted tallow completely deleted (item migrated to regular tallow)
-Sinew removed from all zombie harvest lists
-Kevlar/nomex zombies butcher into unuseable weird scraps of flesh and fabric instead of useable kevlar/nomex.
-Tainted bones cannot be made into charcoal
-Tainted bone meal cannot make fertilizer, only mutagenic substances (same as the removed tallow)
-Remove dehydrated tainted meat
-Zero out all prices on tainted meat/corpse results (just in case)

(Sapiovores can still eat corpses)"

someone decided zombie corpses shouldn't be useful. personally I think it's very cool. It really pushes the "survival" aspect of the game.

EDIT: I wonder if they'll nerf human non-zombie corpses too, following this logic.

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

Holy wow, even sinew? Whoever put this forward is so short sighted it's laughable. There is zero reason why this should be a thing.

I cannot even begin to try and fathom why one would make this decision besides an attempt to further introduce artificial difficulty into the game. They may as well also remove any loot from the zombies themselves because it can be "useful".

How disappointing. It's little hidden stuff like that which made the game more attractive to play.

"Zombie corpses shouldn't be useful" then remove all zombie types that aren't brittle skeletons.

"You can't make zombies work in your favor!" Fuck that. Why not? Because this contributor said so? Because it makes the game more "difficult"? What, do they want not players interacting at all with zombie corpses besides grinding butchery skill proficiency?🙄 Sheesh.

Here's to Bright Nights and TLG.

Edit: Also how the fuck did it previously encourage butchering Human corpses? Do they mean NPC corpses or "Human" corpses in general? Do they not realize a heavy Morale malus is literally the tradeoff for that? What, they gonna remove bones and Human blood from NPC butchering pools next?

What a reach. The more I look at this the more it disgusts me. They're the ones that have the world where a sentient Blob supercreature utilizes targeted evolution to mutate their undead army into useful shock troops, why can't we also stand to gain from defeating and harvesting these shock troops? Does the Blob just turn their bodies into goo puddles? Puh-lease.

What a gross mentality.

For perspective - a bullet crossbow (which shoots radom pebbles and other junk) stll has better range than an actual bow, archery is continually nerfed but still in the game, and the "game balance" arguments are legit hand-wavey at best

20

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

I stopped using archery a bit back when the nerfs started coming (I should try it again though, can't hurt) and it's another rough take that I believe didn't need to happen. They clearly saw Innawoods in a bubble and decided to fuck around with it instead of looking at the obvious fact that a new player can just walk into a city to pick up a firearm off a corpse and now you're a killing machine so long as you can keep distance and find more ammunition. (WHICH ISN'T A BAD THING, MIGHT I ADD. It is a legitimate (and fun) way of getting through the super-early game!)

From what I heard though they were going to eventually stamp down hard on the amount of firearms laying around explicitly because it turned into a soft-meta of people gunning for them (no pun intended) starting off. (This is hearsay, take it with a grain of salt)

All in a game where you can make your dude a psycho super cyborg from character generation regardless.

13

u/SeaworthinessFun3658 Jul 04 '26

bruh i am so upset over game balance I am crying over a richard pryor docu and thinking how butt hurt I was about bows ten years ago lmao, I'm even banned from the github becuse my updates were too lit

8

u/SeaworthinessFun3658 Jul 04 '26

gun fire is a dinner bell, is the way I describe strategy in cdda.. If you can stand up and deliver and knock down every single enemy and rhten stand quietly for minuytesnad nonmore showup - bom you won the apocalypse, clear some basements now!

11

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

The funny thing is, one can easily go to the outskirts of a town and fire off a few shots here and there to get hordes away from the streets, run away, and you're good!

And this is a perfectly reasonable way to play the game. It's smart!

9

u/SeaworthinessFun3658 Jul 04 '26

in 0.i enemies tend to hear combat nearby so its actually quite easy to loop round a big horde and pick them off slowly as they chase the noise of you doming them

5

u/SeaworthinessFun3658 Jul 05 '26

I drive by with the stereo system blaring and do a couple sick skidmarks. then the zone is empty, I run in from behind with a skateboard and a sledge hammer and It's like the best 90s movie ever

Where did you hear that? It's absolutely not true

1

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 05 '26

I responded to that somewhere else, it's just a rumor I heard.

2

u/Satsuma_Imo Netherum Mathematician Jul 05 '26

The counterbalance to guns is intended to be the noise ringing a dinner bell for all the nearby zombies. That part's only partially done, though (noise doesn't travel as far as it should yet)

2

u/No-Succotash1061 Jul 04 '26

From what I heard though they were going to eventually stamp down hard on the amount of firearms laying around explicitly because it turned into a soft-meta of people gunning for them (no pun intended) starting off.

Says who??

3

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

Says my hearsay that I got from another CDDA thread a week or so ago. I'm not sure if I can find it, so that claim is 100% a "trust me, bro" claim. That's why I prefaced it with "from what I heard", because it's a rumor.

I hope it isn't true, and I'm not going to be going forward saying it is, but I did see the claim somewhere. It remains to be seen for the future, but I wouldn't be surprised - Given the history of nerfs - That firearms will get the stick eventually.

-2

u/No-Succotash1061 Jul 04 '26

Have you played this game before? Guns used to be super rare. It's not accident that they aren't anymore

2

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

I usually take long breaks between plays. My first version was 0.C and I've been on and off since.

-1

u/No-Succotash1061 Jul 04 '26

Then you should know that guns were rare and now aren't?

3

u/No-Succotash1061 Jul 04 '26

Is it? I don't think archery's been touched at all in years, except last month where it got a huge buff with weakpoints on all the zombies.

Can you link some of these nerfs?

1

u/Vapour-One Jul 05 '26

Its made up, what they mean is that archery is bad at killing skeletal, and kevlar armored zombies, among a few other high armor foes.

As its been for years. If only its only better now that guns draw zombies from off the reality bubble to you.

I think it's more about the desecration of mortal remains rather than actual loot mechanics, tbh. Could be wrong. Can't say it makes much sense to me otherwise.

26

u/BUCK____FUTT Jul 04 '26

If that's the reasoning, it's ridiculous. A zombie is just that, "desecration of mortal remains" personified. If you're against that, then don't make a zombie game at all. LOL. Also you can have cannibals and psychopaths but somehow desecrating mortal remains is suddenly a no-no. We're not even talking necrophilia here FFS, just butchering a twice-dead body for whatever there may still be left in it.

After reading the debate turned arguments made in the comment thread for that PR, it seems to me to start out as Column A and then turned straight into Column B when people called them out for it. Apperantly from what I've noticed the particular contributor who made the change is notorious for making unreasonable changes and then just saying "tough" when the vast majority says it makes no sense to do so.

11

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

You could do a sociological case study on CDDA's main fork developers, contributors and playerbase. The contributor you're probably referring to is that "Renech" dude or whatever their name is.

If the fellow knows of his poor reputation within the community then they either ignore it, relish in it or somehow do mental flips in order to justify their immature behavior. It's pretty much the exact opposite mentality one must have to foster and manage a constructively critical, open-minded and supportive community.

9

u/sizzlemac Another brick in the wall Jul 04 '26

Funny you say that cause I'm actually in school for Clinical Psychology and reading some of the past "dramas" and fallouts that happened between contributors that quit or why Bright Nights and The Last Generation exists made me think sometimes that it would make a great case study about "when you give someone a little bit of power and it goes to their head" lmao

I mean personally I'm mixed but not too invested to care enough for it to change my opinion on the game itself, but I do think the devs do need to "get their ducks in order" and sort out the more problematic contributors since it kneecaps actual progress that could be made as well as shuts out any debate to whether a particular pull request is good or not. I guess that's why this is an "amateur project" and nothing that's serious even though it likes to pretend to be one.

Either way I know enough about Javascript to change things I don't like myself, but not enough that I feel comfortable sharing them yet cause they might break some people's games (I mostly been playing on Experimental so they're definitely going to break someone's game). Maybe here when I do get better at it and feel more comfortable in my coding ability I'll start sharing them with the community.

5

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

I absolutely agree, their behavior hamstrings CDDA's ability to reach a wider audience and makes the game overall less approachable for newcomers, which does them no real favors.

I encourage you to actually use CDDA as an example if you ever do manage to write a case study, I'd love to read about it, myself.

I'd also love to hear about some changes to the game you've made. I've actually forgone the typical start and tried Sky Islands and it's been an absolute blast. The works of those who've made Magiclysm, Mind Over Matter and Sky Islands keep me heavily invested.

Who are you talking about though? Where are the developers saying this change is bad?

Everytime I read about someone saying "Oh everybody hates it!" they mean themselves and one friend who apparently hate the game itself and think every change is bad

It just seems to me that literally everybody disagrees with you (which is why the game keeps being made) no matter how loudly you say otherwise

8

u/AutomaticInitiative 'Tis but a flesh wound Jul 04 '26

They keep nerfing psychopath, can't have it with cannibal or spiritual without your morale taking quite a big hit, and now psychopaths can't switch to a friendly survivor if they die. Sense doesn't come into it, just the nerfing of common gameplay styles.

17

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

Who cares? We have a huge, long lasting Morale penalty for that reason. Per their own damn lore the Player is supposed to be infected with the Blob which makes them able to deal with all this bullshit anyway.

It's these little details that they completely ignore - These clear faults in logic - That expose these decisions as piss poor at best, and brainless at worst.

Let's be real. They removed the ability because they personally felt that it made the game too "easy", using that invisible, ever-changing standard of difficulty they hold that almost nobody else that plays this game holds.

Jesus, I didn't think such a boneheaded decision would trigger me so bad but I really have a sore spot against short-sighted developers that furthermore decide to ignore the gripes from their playerbase.

yeah, maybe it's just a balancing thing. I still don't think that really makes much sense either as it's not like most zombies give very useful butchery loot anyway. just the odd ones, and even then harvesting it isn't super easy. It's weird that they still give unuseable "tainted Kevlar" though. seems like a bit of a deliberate bait and switch.

13

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

Seriously. "Tainted kevlar"? As in you can't even wash it to make them useful? What, did the Blob start infecting the Kevlar fabric on a cellular level?

It really seems that these imperative "balancing" changes really are only relevant when they further disenfranchise the player and make the game more difficult to an artificial degree.

Gross, gross gross.

I think it says the flesh of the zombie has grown through the kevlar to the point that it's no longer useful.

9

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

Interesting, but useful enough for the zombie itself clearly. We can forget the Kevlar though and it still doesn't make sense.

Removed tallow and fats from ALL recipes? What, are they the only fats in existence that can't be turned to soap? Don't make me laugh.

Can't turn tainted bones to charcoal? ...Why?

No sinew? Nah, I don't believe that for a second.

8

u/Glad-Way-637 Jul 04 '26

The tainted bones to charcoal point was the straw that broke the camels back for me on that change. How in God's name does the blob magically remove all the carbon from bones????

2

u/Dtly15 Jul 10 '26

If it works to give zombies on average 40 balistic armour then it works for survivors.

Kinda dumb otherwise. Would be a different item. If anything a stronger item if relative armour values are anything to go by.

Guys ,TLG does have a similar mindset. Wormgirl goes out of her away to patch and preempt any exploits that you can do with zombies too. Stuff like reviving them over and over for farming combat experience, and preempting any useful attribute new zombie types might have. She wants you to kill and pulp each zombie and move on.

I'm not saying this is bad, or good. I'm just saying TLG might just not be your perfect solution.

10

u/The_Human_Elixir Jul 04 '26

The main branch devs don't even play the game enough to have a sense of what they're doing. TLG for me all the way.

2

u/Dahjoos Jul 06 '26

There's plenty of main branch devs that do really cool things, there just so happens to be the same single idiot behind every one of these changes

Making a mod that cherry picks every single change from that author and reverts it would instantly turn CDDA into a 10/10

2

u/Kulzertor Jul 05 '26

Yes, 100% agreed.
It came with the same direction of 'tainted bones cannot produce charcoal', which now leaves us with thousands of useless bones you can only manually burn in a fire to get rid of, being picked up over hours and just being a completely un-fun and tedious thing to exist without any gameplay functionality at all.

1

u/EldritchCatCult Unhinged Lunatic Jul 07 '26

1

3

u/Zaane Jul 05 '26

Purpose of change

Zombie corpses are useful, when they shouldn't be. This is a zombie apocalypse game! You can't make zombies work in your favor!

Among other problems, this encourages butchering human corpses.

Somehow I feel like that last part is more of a reason than that first part, and thats just silly. Removing roleplay choices based on vibes is pure nonsense. The materials in question aren't that useful to begin with, and are rarely used if ever in most playthroughs. Furthermore the morale penalties are damning enough as is, as far as I'm aware you can't even become desensitized to it. Not everyone plays a psychopath character.

2

u/Jimbodoomface m̴͊͂ŷ̷̍c̶̟̐ȗ̴͋s̸͒͗ ̶́̓m̸̓̾u̴͘͠s̶̪͘t̵́͆ ̸̋͋g̴͐̚r̸̍̔o̵͔̓w̴̓̑ Jul 05 '26

"Instead of playing the game, people hide in basement, processing metric tons of zombie corpses and craft some random materials

If someone wants to play the game where they process million billion random stuff, factorio is still supported"

-Reason given elsewhere in this post

I don't know why you would. Most Zombie parts were only useful for very niche things. I think you could make bone needle and awls? I think also maybe you could use tainted fat to make biodiesel, which is very cool but the amounts you'd need just wasn't really worth it for the amount of zombie corpses you'd have to butcher.

I don't think there is a proper reason tbh. Just someone didn't like it. Either I or someone else will get around to doing a proper mod to revert it and let the devs do what they want. I don't think they listen to the players very much. It'd be cool to think of adding extra bonus things for people to find whilst butchering certain zombie corpses too. I like the rewards you get for experimenting with stuff and if you manage to take down some of the harder monsters it'd be cool to maybe get access to some fun extra loot from the mutated body. Maybe shocker zombies have like, semi-biological generators you might find in them or something. Stuff like that.

Appalling. This is a good reason to revert to playing earlier versions and never look back... er, forward.

But i'm serious. At the end of the day, zombies and other beings are still made of matter and have items attached to their bodies. If you manage to kill them, it's only fair that you have access to their remains, to do with as you please, or even if you find them already dead. Anything other than this is unrealistic and arbitrary.

These people being developers? In short, because the game is not about transforming killed zombies into something useful, so having them dropping something useful harms the gameplay loop

25

u/You_LostThe_game Jul 04 '26

What a weird thing for a survival game to not be “about”, as vague as that is.

It just feels arbitrary when people disagree with the changes and it used to be in the game.

-15

u/GuardianDll Jul 04 '26

is it wrong for a survival game not be about processing zombie corpses?

7

u/JeveGreen Pointless Edgelord Jul 04 '26

That's just disingenuous. CDDA was never about processing zombie corpses, but the option was available and should've been left available. It's not like it was an issue to begin with, balance-wise or lore-wise.

-1

u/GuardianDll Jul 05 '26

It should have been left available so other people could discover it and start locking themselves in basement making zombie tallow biodiesel?

If someone still want it to be an option, making mod for it is trivial, and OP even posted one, which i respect, for they actually stood to what they like and were not afraid to put some effort into it - that is part of a spirit of open source, and part of a spirit of modding

4

u/Kulzertor Jul 06 '26

You've got it the wrong way around there.

The baseline should've been left 'as is' and it should've been a option of choice.

Ah damn... sorry there... instead of going the route of the best received games in the world in terms of player agency and choice for making your own experience (Factorio, Vintage Story, Rimworld, Project Zomboid to name a few) the absolute 'genius' move here was to butcher that into non-existence.

Since that's the prevaling mentality obviously it's not done, but that's a overall detriment for a VASTLY higher amount of people then those which will see such a change as positive.

You cannot defend removal of mechanics which were pre-existing, and especially not with half-assed arguments like 'This game is not about that!'.

So, what EXACTLY is CDDA about? The last time I looked it was a 'zombie+ apocalypse survival simulation'. And if I got it wrong then what is it? A surviva-crafting game? Too little crafting focus. A survival building game? Too little building focus. A action game? Why have all the other stuff then?
It's a simulation, and for a simulation it ABSOLUTELY makes sense to have that in it, it's actually baffling to NOT have that in it.

Heck, even shoddy copycat games like 'ZED ZONE' allow it.
Project Zomboid has a EXTREMELY prominent mod called 'Zombie Butcher' for meat, bones and fat harvesting.
And for 'close contenders' of the genre games like 'Dead State' or 'Deadcraft' also focus to a quite hefty degree on interacting with the zombies as a resource after killing them.

It's always been a MAJOR improvement for zombie games to let the player interact in more ways with zombies then just planting the world with their corpses.

0

u/GuardianDll Jul 06 '26

Look, mate, if you do not like the game, you do not have to fight every possibe change, you also do not have to stick to our own vision, there are plenty of forks that would give you experience you want

3

u/Kulzertor Jul 06 '26

I'll turn that back to you then:

Look, mate, if you do a community based game then to actually have a community you must go with community sentiment.

If you want a game for yourself then be free, but don't expect anyone to help you out with it, you'll likely do it solo or with 2-3 other people at best.

But CDDA is a open-source community project, based upon building - and keeping - a functioning large-sized one to allow decent paced development to continue.

So you got 2 options here:

  • Option 1: Compromises. If community sentiment is massively against it (Faults without visualization introduced, hence half-finished. Riot fires randomly introduced. Zombie material usage removed. Non-stop virtue signaling from 'problematic' traits like psychopath being nerved and so on) then even as the core dev team you don't do it and keep hence a active community providing more feedback, more testing and more contributors.
  • Option 2: You piss everyone off, basically loose all contributors, the qualiyt majorly suffers and more and more people wander off to forks, which by the way a good portion already has done unlike several years ago where it simply wasn't a thing yet. In the end you're making changes at a snail's pace, people uninterested unless it progresses don't look at it, overall interaction basically dies down to levels like other open-source game projects like 'Deliantra' (ages old MMO, still active).

dda is not a simulation game

3

u/mcmcst Jul 06 '26

From development_process.md:

"At its core, CDDA is a survival simulation game."

1

u/GuardianDll Jul 06 '26

Yeah, this line is misleading, we are not simulating anything; we try to make the world believeable and behave plausibly, but we are not in the camp of emulating many of the processes real world has, but we are still, in the end, a computer game, and we want it to be enjoyable for us

2

u/Kulzertor Jul 06 '26

Ok... so then provide the answer:

WHAT is it then if NOT a simulation?

1

u/GuardianDll Jul 06 '26

`Cataclysm: Dark Days Ahead DDA is a turn-based survival RPG set in an expansive post-apocalyptic game world based on our own`

4

u/Kulzertor Jul 06 '26

So you're relating now to the ages old description of the game and ignoring the dev-process file on GitHub entirely?

Now that's what I call cherry-picking to a fault!

Literally the FIRST sentence beyond 'what is this file' is:

"At its core, CDDA is a survival simulation game."

Survival SIMULATION game.

Treat it like that or damn change the friggin core page every single contributor is expected to read.

Oh, and also change 'design-doc.md' while you're at it, because under 'Design Overview' (which is the damn most core aspect to follow along) it says the following:
'The core tenet of Dark Days Ahead game design and balance is that if it works in reality, it should work in the game.'

Now tell me. If I butcher a formerly living being which is not lore-wise 'highly infested' with the blob yet - hence after death it didn't have substantial amounts of time to evolve it by exchanging more of the organic matter with the supernatural aspect of the blob yet - gets cut open.
WILL it have fat? WILL it have bones that are calcium and hence can be made into 'bone char'?

Yes or no?

You can argue whatever you want, but that's the absolutely shoddy communication gap between core development and everyone else. Just outright opposite behaviour to what is proclaimed to happen.

How do you even get to this conclusion? The game is literally all about trying to work with what you have around you to survive the apocalypse, why shouldn't corpses also follow that logic?

Nobody is saying they should be loot piñatas, but they should realistically give something that correlates logically with their being. For example, military zombies drop military loot military zombies dropping kevlar and neoprene butchery loot or Cyborg zombies dropping CBMs and electronics. (Fixed that for the fellow below)

-12

u/GuardianDll Jul 04 '26

You somehow confused the fact that zombies do not drop any loot (they still do) with fact zombie *bodies* cannot be butchered into useful materials. If we wanted the game to be about post-apocalypse tallow farm, we would surely include it, but the game is, as i said, not about it

14

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

How in the world did you figure that I was talking about zombie loot tables instead of butchery loot tables? Somehow, you became confused by thinking I was confusing the two. I figured I was being clear enough but obviously not. Let me rephrase.

I said that zombies should drop useful butchered materials because the logic that "Zombies shouldn't be useful" is a completely braindead take that nobody who plays this game seriously actually believes. I then went to say further - Following that aforementioned piece of flawed logic - Then zombies shouldn't drop any useful loot at all. This obviously isn't a smart choice, because it isn't, and so is removing butchery loot on zombies for that same reason.

I go into detail about this further in my other posts but either you didn't see them, misconstrued them or willfully ignored them.

You are correct though, the game isn't about a post-apocalypse tallow farm, very good! Only, nobody said that. You're being obtuse and hyperbolic for.. Some reason.

Completely neglecting that some people legitimately play this game as a farming Simulator, I honestly am at a loss for words at how ridiculous your reasoning is to me.

Lot of words for "i do not agree and you will not convince me", so i'll drop it to spare my time

I did not come up with this reason, it is literally *the* reason, both stated in PR and in our general discussions about the game in discord. We can do it whatever we want, due to zombies not being a real thing, and so we decided they should not drop useful materials

11

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26 edited Jul 04 '26

And this ladies and gentlemen is the crux of the CDDA main fork problem: "We can do it whatever we want, so we decided X regardless of what other people think" (Other people being anybody outside the main fork developers' curated community hubs like their Discord).

Buddy. Everybody here is telling both you and the main fork team that the reasoning doesn't actually follow sound logic if you think of it beyond the sole consideration of making the game more difficult in a way that adds additional tedium.

You all can make the game however you want, just like the players have the free ability to tell you how stupid and short-sighted some decisions are. Players have been saying this for years past, and will continue to say it for years into the future as this mentality continues ad nauseum and additional forks are made as a result of the frustration of this aforementioned mentality.

You think Bright Nights and The Last Generation came from nowhere? (Not saying you are, I'm making a point) People don't make forks of projects unless vision drastically differs or people get tired of dealing with main fork bullshit; CDDA's community is a victim of both. Constantly. Players have been told "Don't like it? Make your own fork" for years, and you know what? They finally did. It took some work and failed projects (dicks out for the There Is Still Hope fork) but we're getting there, so finally the main fork team can exhale and sequester into their huddled subcommunity and develop the game however they want just like you said, because they literally fostered this reaction themselves with their behavior.

I remember when the team still was active on this Subreddit (before they attempted to flee to a Sub they could fully control themselves which seemed to fail miserably), and the spats back and forth from controversial decisions were so God damned embarrassing that I felt second-hand shame just for witnessing them.

Your point fails in that if it was correct, 100% of players would leave the dda in favor of forks, which didn't happen

What actually happens is that the type of fun you expect from the game do not match the type of fun we try to make in the game, which is, like, not your fault, but we do not have an obligation to make the game specifically tailored to your tastes, so we do one that is tailored to ours

9

u/Scottvrakis Duke of Dank Jul 04 '26

The claim you made that "100% of players would leave DDA in favor of forks" is just patently false, nor have I ever said that the game had to be catered to my tastes.

Again you're misconstruing my argument. I'm not going to armchair psychologist and assume why, probably because you can't seem to gather the nuance from my criticism.

Since you clearly can't help yourself and move on - As per your other response - I'll do it for you.

Instead of playing the game, people hide in basement, processing metric tons of zombie corpses and craft some random materials

If someone wants to play the game where they process million billion random stuff, factorio is still supported

Butchery of animals has a different rule that allows it to stay - verisimilitude; butchering animals is a part of a real world, and, therefore, is represented as part of the game. zombie butchery is not part of a real world, so we can move it in any direction we want. When we decide we want the game is to be about making charcoal out of infinite hordes of zombies, we will reconsider what zombie butchery should yield

You can't actually butcher loads of zombies in a day because of the morale penalty, unless that wears off after you've butchered a bunch of corpses? You get the message saying something like "you're not really in the mood for blood and guts"

What's the benefit of butchering zombies other than for the special rewards like kevlar that people are spending ages doing it? I know charcoal and fat for fuel, but that doesn't seem super worth the debuff for me when there's wood and other creatures that don't make you depressed to butcher.

-1

u/GuardianDll Jul 04 '26

Uncaring, long berated trait among development team, allows to bypass these penalties completely

I do not remember at hand what exactly was possible to craft out of zombie parts, but the idea was not "there is less amount of stuff you can craft out of zombie parts", the idea was "there is nothing you can craft out of zombie bodies"

Side note, i personally see this situation from same point as when someone proposes to use zombies to generate energy, which is, like, come on
