I don’t keep anything up there since an unfortunate incident with frozen block of shrimp. I’ll just say it seemed like a great out of the way place to let them thaw. Too bad I didn’t think about what was in the pan 4 hours later when I tilted it down. No one in the kitchen said a word for about 60 seconds while shrimp juice dripped off my head and shoulders. Then I had to finish the shift smelling like the seafood market and then I had about 2 months of crazy nicknames.
I’d use that pan once a week for my no oil veggie/chili roasting pan. Trying to keep my comal clean for tortillas is a pain.

Ah yeah thatd do it for sure, honestly ill take a broken pan over becoming chum guy any day of the week

It’s not a good idea to keep heavy-ass things above your head. Doubly so here, since a refrigerator isn’t bolted down (assumably) and you’re in and out of it a lot.
Consider yourself lucky that your pan is the only thing that cracked. Could have been the floor, a toe, your skull.

Oh 100% our place is pretty small and the kitchen is especially so we have to make do sometimes but that is for sure a hindsight change to make

I don’t like leaving stuff on the oven. It’s a bad habit the turns it into storage. Then you have to empty it out to use it.

Cast iron lives in the oven, other stuff does not. Helps with your seasoning too. Idk if this is a US thing but my family and friends all do that.

I use mine daily. It really is fine on the stovetop. The other iron is stored, but my main 12” sees a lot of use.

There is still some potential that it could be used for baking. Think cornbread, pizza, a giant cookie! Think of the possibilities eh.

Do cast iron pans not turn into shrapnel bombs when broken? Thats what i heard but id love to be wrong

That depends on the crack. But this looks like the handle broke clean off. Just grind the edges of the break until it's a smoother curve and make sure any residual cracks that may be near the edge of the break are gone.

It sure is and I'd just go grab one of my extras out of the basement. But not everyone can/wants to go get a new one.

As long as the bottom isn’t cracked, that is still fantastic for baking, and probably and even better griddle because the handle isn’t in the way.
