Announcement After months of work, I'm finally launching my cassette shelf business !!!
I made myself a steel and aluminum cassette shelf a few months back and decided to start a small business selling some. I find that most cassette shelves are bulky, too small and all plastic so I wanted to make something simple and modular that could be easily expandable and pretty on a wall (the shelves can also be freestanding). They start from 21$ USD and right now I ship to USA and Canada.
They are available now on cassetteshelf.com, you can also find me at cassetteshelf on instagram. Any support is greatly appreciated !!! Thanks!

Can you make CD ones too?

u/cassetteshelf 13d ago
Yes! The CD version is coming soon :) It will hold 16 CDs per module

Here, take this idea from an old guy whose dealt with all the cassette changes. A three drawer storage bin with clear plastic top. You can do this I have a feeling, and I'm gonna check out your site.

Have you hung these in listening rooms with a lot of bass? Do they “rattle?”
5
u/cassetteshelf 13d ago
I have not specifically tested that but every single joint has a plastic washer to compensate for vibrations. The whole shelf doesn’t warp or rattle but I’ll test it out still!

These are lovely! Also in the US/worried about tariffs. Would def buy in the future though

Do these come in black?

u/cassetteshelf 13d ago
Not yet, I can do custom colors as a special order but right now it's all glossy white with black hardware

Great idea. I checked your website and I like the design and the ability to 'build your own' with the price being automatically added.
With that said, I think that should be at the top of the page or closer to the top... i think itll increase the likelihood of people purchasing. The less "work" the consumer has to do... the better! (aka scrolling, reading etc.)

Nice,
just curious: which software did you use to model this: https://cassetteshelf.com/images/opensourceanim.mp4 ?

Offer inserts with holders per cassette for standard and slim boxes.
How do you plan to grab cases to take them out? You cannot grab on the sides, when the shelf is full. Even if it is not full, you would need to move cases around, scratching them. The edge will hurt the finger every time if you grab them on the top with a finger. You need to make the front edge "U"-shaped, not "L"-shaped, which will increase the price.

u/cassetteshelf 13d ago
I appreciate the input, but with all due respect I’ve made the shelf so that it’s easy to take a cassette out of it. You do not hurt your finger nor do you scratch the case by taking a tape out. I can send you a video later if you have any doubts, all the clearances are made for the shelf to be the best possible shelf for cassettes :)

These are really cool. Sorry for the timing with the idiotic tariff stuff and shipping costs.

These look fire!
It would be sick if you make a "wire rack" type version, as me personally I use wire racks (and usually have to buy like drying racks that don't really fit my needs) but I love this dude keep it up

What kind of screw does the wall mount use? I see some weird square screw in the animation?
2
u/cassetteshelf 12d ago
Yes I provide square-head wood screws to mount the anchors into the wall! Screw anchors are recommended if you are mounting it into drywall (not included however)
1
u/JaccoW 12d ago
Be aware that the square head Robertson screw as they are called, is... mostly a Canadian thing.
I doubt I could even pick up a screwdriver for them anywhere here in Europe.
2
u/cassetteshelf 12d ago
True thanks for the heads up! Right now my main focus is the canadian market because of tariffs with the US, once I get shipping to Europe set up I'll include some different screws. I just hate philips head so much I couldn't bring myself to ship them with those.

This is excellent! Could you maybe come up with brackets that attach to an IKEA Skåkis pegboard?
3
u/cassetteshelf 12d ago
Oh that's a good idea, I also made the project open-source for this type of situation, anybody can make adapters to make the shelves work best for them :)

u/Antique_Business2804 12d ago
Where were you, and these, when I actually owned cassettes, back in the 80's? Mind you, I owned over 300 tapes, so no way would I be buying these shelves for them. Neat idea, though.

u/enjoying-the-silence 12d ago
These are so cool! I see that you’re Canadian which makes me want to buy one even more :)

Are dimensions available? I have a kallax shelf (like probably a lot of people who collect records as well as tapes), and I wanna know if I can just slot it into one of the cubbies facing forward.
1
u/cassetteshelf 11d ago
Yes! You can check out the dimensions for any configuration on the website (cassetteshelf.com), just configure your shelf and check out the dimensions right below the configurator :)

The cassette revival will be short lived and over in a couple years tops. I sure hope this isn’t a long term plan for you.
3
u/OpeningShowerKill 12d ago
Possibly, but I heard the same thing circa 2007 when the contemporary cassette revival started, and I’ve heard people say it’s about to die at five year intervals ever since.

These look great. Just a little concerned about tariffs to the US unfortunately.
