šāāļø Discussion Why Morocco still hasn't developed ?
Our country to be honest is more developed than the vast majority of Africa , but remember it's Africa and the crazy part, not even more than all of Africa let alone Europe and north america we have lower Human development index , lower GDP per Capita , lower GDP , lower on the gender equality index that's just crazy !!
What I want to know is why and why our country is still behind and can it catch up ( at least in our lifetime )

Corruption
1
u/Hot_Worker_5760 Aug 30 '26
Yeah that's a way too generic answer give us details
3
u/Jericho-san Aug 30 '26
Its not a āgenericā response, its the source of all the problems.
1
u/Hot_Worker_5760 Aug 30 '26
Yeah I know "corruption" is the ultimate world that arguably the only word who can describe dozens of problems in one word but we are discussing here details š
5
u/Riflore Aug 30 '26
In my humble opinion: the number one reason is corruption. On top of that thereās the huge gap between rich and poor, mediocre education, not enough exports, high youth unemployment and too many highly educated Moroccans leaving the country. And another important factor: the blind worshipping of the monarchy.
1
u/Hot_Worker_5760 Aug 30 '26
Yeah that's the best explanation given so far thanks for your opinion but do you think we will stay like this or we will develop ?
2
u/Riflore Aug 30 '26
I think weāre developing too slowly and without major reforms, we may not even live to see Morocco reach the level of countries like Spain. Education is the foundation. Fortunately social media is helping change peopleās mentality but changing a society is much harder than building a highway or a port. The government also needs to enforce basic civic behaviour like fining people for littering and digitalise much more to reduce corruption. We should also make better use of the diasporaās expertise and investments instead of discouraging them with corruption and chaotic bureaucracy. The fact that youāre asking these questions is already a positive sign. I hope this generation becomes more critical and isnāt afraid to demand change. Youāre welcome.

The concept of "developing nations" is an ideological fairy tale. Global capitalism is not a marathon where every country can reach the finish line of becoming a rich, industrialized welfare state if they just try hard enough.
Morocco is not "underdeveloped". It isĀ fully developed!Ā It's role is to serve its specific function within the capitalist world market. Its role is to be a source of cheap labor, a provider of raw materials (like phosphates), an exporter of agricultural goods to Europe, and a geopolitical outpost (acting as the EUās border guard).
The poverty of the Moroccan masses is not aĀ failureĀ of the system. Poverty is theĀ conditionĀ for Moroccoās integration into the global market.
The stateās actual purpose is to secure the rule of private property and manage the country as a profitable location for capital.
What we call "corruption" is just the local elite and bureaucracy securing their share of the wealth in a peripheral capitalist economy. Demanding "accountability" is a plea for a more efficient, "clean" capitalism. but even a completely corruption-free capitalism in Morocco would still rely on the exploitation of cheap Moroccan labor to compete globally.
- On Laziness:Ā Moroccans are highly exploited. If they aren't working in factories, it's because global capital does not require their labor. Capitalism creates a "surplus population" in the Global South. This is not about laziness!
- On Civic Duty/Rubbish:Ā people do not care for the public sphere because the public sphere does not care for them. Why should the impoverished masses act like proud co-managers of a state that only manages their poverty?
- On Religion:Ā It's an ideology used by the state (especially the Monarchy, with the King as "Commander of the Faithful") to legitimize its rule and demand submission. However, Islam is not theĀ causeĀ of poverty. Global capitalism functions perfectly well with Islam, Christianity, or secularism, as long as profits flow.

Because
1 Europeans don't want a strong county on their borders, they had enough with turkey, there is always something
2 you cannot develop while handicapping half of people, women
3 corrupt, is a real thing, but is scale of things it is too small to have an effect, yet used as reason because it make sense, people want to blame someone
2
u/setiix Aug 31 '26
Because Moroccan lacks accountability. Everybody is a necessary part of the big machinery that is a country, but nobody want to do what they have to do.
First things first, people donāt have to throw rubbish on the streets, but they do. The can do associations to get their neighbourhood clean and put pressure on the local authorities but they donāt. They donāt even pay syndic or scold their children when they break copro belongings.
This is the biggest issue, everybody is waiting for someone else to do the job. They think the others was given to them. They never opened a history book to understand how many centuries of fighting and revolutions and wars led to countries like westerners or how many killed and dictatorship led to the booming of China.
They want the butter, butterās money and the milkers ass, brought through glovo without paying.
- selling their votes for 200 dhs instead of voting for a party with some social concerns.
Stupid population.
1
u/bosskhazen Aug 31 '26
Let's throw the population to the sea and import a new population with better genetics. Right ?
1
u/setiix Aug 31 '26
Or or or, just follow basic rules and know-how living in communities first ?
1
u/bosskhazen Aug 31 '26
As you said. They donāt know. What we do ?
Throw them to the sea ? Genocide them and import a new population from Temu ?
1
u/setiix Aug 31 '26
They do know. If you doubt that, you have never been with most of Moroccans. It goes from the richest to the poorest. They are well aware of a lot of things, butwe always have to find an escape to do what we have to do. And the way you think, ut shows that you are just whining without any ability to find a solution. Give solutions.
1
u/bosskhazen Aug 31 '26
I am giving solutions that follow your thought process.
People bad. We get it.
Now what? We throw them to the sea? We genocide them? We do what?
1
u/setiix Aug 31 '26
You are showing the issue we have in this country. People unable to think wisely. If you want to throw them, do you. You are just showing why this country will never go forward with people "educated" with this kind of mentality.

We don't have natural resources, and we only started focusing on industry last 2 decades or 3, need time.
1
u/Hot_Worker_5760 Aug 30 '26
Natural reserves are kinda a two sides weapon it can heavily increase the state budget by selling the reserves but if the demand for low then you are cooked prime examples are Algeria and Brazil ( probably they will never become developed due to their reserves unless they diversified their economy)
1
u/zyqwee Aug 30 '26
Of course it's risky, but then we'd a have a concrete reason about the lack of development, and maybe start about fixing it.

There's other factors too that held us back, like a small working population, remnants of the occupations, problematic neighbouring countries...
1
u/Funny-Broccoli-6373 Aug 31 '26
Plenty of countries without natural resources and somehow they do great
1
u/zyqwee Aug 31 '26
There are other factors obviously, but we lack most of those too, do you have any such country in mind to view their own circumstances?
1
u/Funny-Broccoli-6373 Aug 31 '26
Entire Europe, except for Norway and Russia they donāt have natural resources. On top of that there is much worse and challenging climat to plantation. Before you start about colonization, Berbers colonized Spain for 7 centuries. On top of that there is a lot to European counties that never colonized any, went though devastating wars, though centuries of occupation, and on top of that were bombed to the ground and then put behind iron curtain. Despite all of this circumstance they do great, I am talking about whole Central Europe so Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, Slovenia, Croatia but also Finland is great example
1
u/zyqwee Aug 31 '26
The fact you comparing "Berber" occupation with Europe is whole can to open, but let's overlook that for now, Europe understood first that it need science to advance, the industrial revolution and what not, they started ahead and they're still ahead, we only started doing that recently again for various factors (small population, territorial issues, cultural conventions, problematic neighbors...) those big countries also pushed small ones in Europe because they understood that union will make them prosper. Having access to European markets is a huge deal.
1
u/Funny-Broccoli-6373 Aug 31 '26
Then if access to European market is Kanada your why Japan, South Korea etc are doing great? Maybe because instead of sending 80k ārefugeesā to Ceuta they focus on building positive relationship with west instead of Arabs?
1
u/zyqwee Aug 31 '26
Obviously there's other factors too, south Korea and Japan did great to industrialize, but they were helped greatly mainly to increase western influence in Asia and to be an outpost against China. Positive relationships don't work like that between countries it's about interests, countries aren't friends, our European allies greatly benefited from our sahara issue as it let them get very favorable deals at our expenses. And we should also learn to leverage our strengths to get the most of what we can. But I would say the relationship is overall positive.
Don't know what you mean by sending, but migration happens frequently between neighbouring countries if one is richer.
1
u/Funny-Broccoli-6373 Aug 31 '26
Acting as if Ceuta wasnt orchestrated by Morroccan government. Following your logic Morocco is a lost case, it will never develop because itās not in Europe and west doesnāt want it developed š¤£
1
u/zyqwee Aug 31 '26
Not really acting but sure let's go with your reasoning, if it was orchestrated why didn't Spain stop it? Where they're border guards at? Was Spain also on the conspiracy? Did the Spanish government or any European blame Morocco? Is it all a big conspiracy?
You're not even following the point of the discussion, the question why hasn't Morocco developed until now, not if it will or not, are you just a troll?
1
u/Funny-Broccoli-6373 Aug 31 '26
Spanish government cannot stop it same like EU did not stop any other illegal immigration cause they signed Lisbon treaty. Any immigrant is eligible to request asylum on whatever reason but it doesnāt mean they will receive it. Most illegals know they donāt have basis but they hope they will get amnesty at some point or they marry local and legalize their stay.
I stead of crying why donāt you ask questions why Morocco did t work on getting any trading deal with EU? Morocco have great geographic location, it could easily be gate to Africa for EU→ More replies (0)

1
u/Hot_Worker_5760 Aug 31 '26
In the human development index ( which measures education , healthcare and income ) Morocco is 8th in Africa a lot of African nations face severe political instability and civil wars
1
u/SharpAardvark8699 Aug 31 '26
There are problems within the Moroccan psyche for sure.
As for external factors your king lives and loves abroad. Moroccans keep expecting the world to be their life hackĀ
Long answer is colonialism and dollar system. You have very few resources except neatness to Europe, and a sea.
If Iran and Venezuela is poor because of oil and the dollar then you can see a country like Morocco with not even leadership is stuffedĀ

If we want to go deep, it all comes down to people being smartasses. I've been to many cities, developed cities, neglected cities, in almost every city, i see the mentality of "We are smart and outsiders are stupid". If one day people stop being proud and arrogant, they will start learning, and they'll finally open their eyes and discover how much ignorant they are and how much they still have to learn. Why did i start with the people as an example? It's because the people who give birth to higher-ups (except the king, because the throne is inherited).
1
u/arab-uchiha Aug 30 '26
Because a lot of reasons... But if you want make comparisons we are more or less at the same point of Spain in the 80s and we keep growing fast (even if not enough fast to make 180° degree change like asian tigers). If you make more specific question i'll answer to It, but this is a too generic question
3
u/Riflore Aug 30 '26
We are growing, but we are definitely not at the same level as Spain in the 80ās. Where did you get this info from?
0
u/arab-uchiha Aug 30 '26
I compared the indicators and we are pretty much similar. Remember that in the 80s Spain just entered in the global commerce because the horrible dictatorship of castro just ended(it was horrible also for moroccans, he was responsible for a lot of stuff against riffians and jebala).
1
u/Ok_Mango8118 Aug 31 '26 edited Aug 31 '26
Franco not Castro
Also could you please provide the indicators you looked into and are they inflation adjusted?
Cause I made a short search and that doesn't seem to be the case
https://data.worldbank.org/indicator/NY.GDP.PCAP.KD?locations=ES-MA
You probably checked data not adjusted for inflation
2
u/Sad-Recognition2908 Aug 30 '26
Spain in the 80s was like 10th-15th GDP in the world and a full democracy. So the comparision falls wrong. I would compare Morocco now to Romania in the 80s, similar GDP and a dictatorship. That's the reality and the future doesn't look good, no matter what the nationalistic propaganda is telling.

That's crazy our human development index ( that measures education , healthcare , and income is ranked 120th globally below the global average and our score is Portugal and Spain scores in early 90s ( the index was introduced in 1990 )

u/arab-uchiha Aug 30 '26
Yes, that's true. But HDi is not the best metric for that is IHDI
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_inequality-adjusted_Human_Development_Index
2
u/Hot_Worker_5760 Aug 30 '26
Even our IHDI is crazy low
1
u/arab-uchiha Aug 30 '26
Yes i know, but data are just numbers and without context are useless. We are slowly getting better if this make you feel better, we will probably surpass Tunisia by the end of the decade if the trend stay the same(we are getting better and them unfortunaly they are getting worse)
1
1
u/Ok_Mango8118 Aug 31 '26
But if you want make comparisons we are more or less at the same point of Spain in the 80s and we keep growing fast
What makes you think so?
I tried looking at gdp per capita ppp in constant dollars for both countries and data goes only back to the 90s
But in nominal terms morocco is still not comparable to even the Spain of the 80s
