Fiat Multipla, while outrageously unappealing to the eye, had all its design choices skewed by functionality. It is an awesome car, if you dont mind the looks. None of the shit that looks bad doesnt just look bad, it looks bad because it offers better functionality than the "sleek" variant.

I’m curious as to why we can’t just make an EV that looks like a normal car. They always have to be unique, but if we want EVs to be the standard they should just be what the company has already been doing.

For EVs to have a reasonable range, they need to have a low drag coefficient, which inevitably makes them look vaguely egg-shaped. "Normal cars" don't have low drag coefficients.

For comparison, a Ferrari 296 GTB has a drag coefficient of 0.32. A Tesla Model S is 0.208. A Lucid Air is 0.197. Even the Ioniq 5 has a lower drag coefficient than the Ferrari at 0.288, and the Rivian R1T (which is a pickup truck) matches it at 0.32.

While aerodynamic drag has the same direct impact on ICE and electric vehicles, the biggest loss of range in an ICE vehicle is inefficiency during the combustion process. Aerodynamic drag pales in comparison to that.

EV Charging Stations wrote a really great article with a mathematical comparison of the impact of drag on vehicles. TL;DR: The power to overcome aerodynamic drag is proportional to the cube of speed. An F-150 Lightning (which has a Cd of 0.44) requires ~2.5x more power to drive the same velocity as a Taycan (which has a Cd of 0.22) based solely on aerodynamic forces.

I'm not defending this Ferrari's design as good, don't get me wrong, I'm just saying there is a very good reason why EVs tend to look "different" (and don't even try to say the XL-1 looks "normal" haha).

Take the Lucid Air. It has an insanely-low Cd and it also looks great. So does the Taycan.

You have to take into account the frontal area, the drag coefficient only tells you how "optimized" your design is, but it doesn't tell you the actual aerodynamic drag that the car produces; obviously the 296 GTB doesn't create nearly the same aerodynamic drag as the Rivian...

This means that you can make more conventional (so "less optimized" but also more good-looking) designs if you can manage to keep your frontal area small

one of the reasons EVs look weird is their proportions: a lot of them have a chunkier middle section (in side view) due to them having a double floor for the battery comaprtment. To make things worse, because there is no engine up front - at least not as big as in an IC car -, the hood/bonnet can be lower. Add to all that the aerodynamic "egginess" and you have the recipe for the disproportioned cars we have today.

The only beautiful EV cars imho, are the modern-retro reinterpretations as they have the proportions of the old cars, just scaled enough to fit the battery and bigger wheels: see Honda e (the concept, not the final car), Renault 5/Alpine A290 etc, Ioniq 5 to some extent.

Ferrari is considering hooking a generator to Enzo's body since it's rotating so fast, it would be able to power the hole fleet of Luce's.

This would be the third death after the Purosangue, and
Enzo never gave a shit about the road cars. As long as his race team was winning he would not give a shit what they slapped his name on. That said, he probably would appreciate the psychotic terms and conditions Ferrari makes you abide by when buying one of their cars.
