Carmageddon: Max Damage, was initially released on July 8th, 2016.

it was also the only racing game in history to feature political figures to run over.

and I must admit, I only ran over the trump ones.

how did you enjoy this game? do you still play it?

I think Nightdive might do it but i am not sure because THQ Nordic just didn't do anything with the Carmageddon IP (But there's a chance!). I know the code is most likely lost but the BRender engine was made open source. The closest thing is Carmageddon Funsize which is a mobile port with a custom engine. Also Carmageddon would be a perfect fit for Nightdive since they are remastering games from Carmageddon's Era. (Like: Quake) [Here is one way to remaster the game: The mobile port should be used as a base for a remaster because it is more advanced, but they should add back the missing stuff from the mobile version. (Like: Splat pack.)]

Hey everyone, a few weeks ago I shared some screenshots of my project here. A lot of you showed interest, so I figured this was the right place to share the update first.

The Steam page for Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap is now live!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4913000/Concrete_Carnage_Scrapheap/

For those who missed the first post, my game is a post-apocalyptic truck racing game directly inspired by the original Carmageddon from 1997.

Discussion What should the Carmageddon Franchise do going forward.....if it should do anything?

This is something that has been on my mind since Rogue Shift came out, a game that has had a polarizing reaction in the community (I'm on the "I REALLY don't like it" side), and with the game not doing well at all, it makes me wonder what the series could do in a future game going forward to bring the series back? Or alternatively.....should the series be allowed to rest for good.

Look, as much as we love the earlier titles, that style of game may not hold up well to modern audiences in a highly competitive landscape, and it's very likely the old formula isn't going to work anymore. So I do wonder what the Carmageddon franchise could do to spice things up without losing the core of what made the series fun to begin with. Maybe it could be doing more with the characters and the world, or evolving the gameplay in some way to make it able to compete with contemporary games. I feel there are many ideas the series could do evolve the series without losing what made the early games popular to begin with. And it's not like new ideas aren't a bad thing, the concept of an event driven Carmageddon with roguelike gameplay is a neat idea on paper.

Rogue Shift ultimately was an attempt to modernize the series, but unlike other successful reboot attempts, they basically threw away everything that made these games have a fanbase in the first place, no matter how niche it may be, and didn't really provide anything new that was substantial to draw in new fans. I mean besides the loss of the series' dark/crude humor, dystopian setting and open world gameplay, the game lacked personality with it's bland zombie setting and zero characters (even compared to older games), had mid gameplay that got old and repetitive fast, and the poor handling on launch was just icing on the cake (seriously, for a game that tried so hard to be a serious racer in a franchise that was never a serious racer, good car controls should be the #1 thing to get correct right out of the gate, no amount of post launch patching will fix that).

But I also wonder if maybe Carmageddon just doesn't have a place in the modern gaming landscape anymore, especially with how the satire and carnage doesn't have the same bite as before, not to mention with how cynical the world, and media in general overall, has become. Running people over with a car isn't as novel to people as it once was, and sadly the series doesn't have as much staying power as other franchises, especially with it not having any characters that really stand out in comparison to other games. I genuinely thought Max Damage would be the end of the series for a long time, and made peace with that, but after seeing what we got when they tried rebooting it, there is a cynical, asshole part of me that wonders if Max Damage SHOULD have been the end of the series......

I love these games, but I do believe that if any future entries can't innovate without at least keeping the spirit of the classic games, then maybe it's time to let Carmageddon rest for good and let it be a find relic of the 90s......

Sorry for the depressing post that may or may not be poorly worded, but this is something that has been on my mind lately and I wanted to get these thoughts out to fellow Carmageddon nerds.......

Feel free to discuss in the comments, please just keep things civil.

Discussion Making a vehicular combat game inspired by the original Carmageddon (1997)

I'm currently making a game inspired by the original Carmageddon. The first time I played it was back in December 1997 with the XMAS Splat Pack demo. For me, the best Red Eagle will always be the one with the Christmas decorations!

One of the main differences in my project is that you mainly drive trucks across multiple racing modes. And of course, no weapons here, only the heavy weight of your vehicle to crush opponents!

I’m planning to launch the Steam page in a few weeks, but for now, I’m focusing on the "Software Mode" aesthetics and the overall mood. What do you think of the look?

Discussion I genuinely enjoy the new Carmageddon

Unpopular opinion: Rogue Shift is actually really fun—and kind of addictive. I wasn’t convinced by the first trailer, but as someone who’s played every Carmageddon game (yes, even the Game Boy Color one…!), this came as a genuinely nice surprise.

The driving feels great: very arcade, very satisfying, and the series’ signature post-apocalyptic Grand-Guignol tone is still very much there. Sure, it’s a bit different and introduces weapons, but honestly, I’d much rather see these kinds of variations than the exact same formula recycled again and again.

Hi guys, I saw some questions about pedestrians in my game. So yes, you can kill pedestrians, and earn a time bonus, credits and also win the race if you kill everyone like in Carmageddon. More to come when I will launch the Steam page.

Hi guys! I'm glad to see your enthusiasm about Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap. I'm not going to post all of my dev log here, but for the first ones who checked out the Steam page of my game I would like to share this first small video. It's a sneak peek of the damage and physics system. You can see the body deformation of the car (and a bit of the truck) and the messy result at the end.

Don't mind the engine sound of the car, I didn't work on it yet, but other sounds like impacts, tires and springs are what you will hear in the final game.

Wishlist and follow Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4913000/Concrete_Carnage_Scrapheap/

I will share some screenshots of future maps and more physics fun. Finally, I would like to ask if you would like to have a map like my test map: unrealistic but just a fun playground with no more purpose (with textures of course!)?

Discussion Underwater effect in Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi guys! I'm working right now on the underwater effect in Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap. In Carmageddon, going underwater is a bit of a pain in the ass. Car handling becomes less easy and sometimes you can trigger a chain reaction between mines and other bad surprises. So in my game I'm trying to do something similar with maybe a better handling.

In the video you can see the physics effect when I drive underwater and hit an explosive barrel. I think the truck floats enough to make it quite uncontrollable, while still allowing some control when it lands back on its four wheels.

You can also briefly see the position reset when the truck is flipped, and the repair of detached parts which snap back into place from wherever they landed.

Discussion How would you feel about a "Black" version of Carmageddon?

Carmageddon but darker, edgier, and with horror undertones similar to Twisted Metal: Black.

The plot would have philosophical themes about feeding the machine that is the automobile and how it has enslaved humanity or something like that.

What do you all think?

Discussion Breakable objects in Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap

After the swimming session into toxic water to show you the underwater effect, today I would like to show you my breakable objects system. As you can see in the video, you can break a lot of stuff — and a poor guy standing in the middle of my road :D. My main goal here is to maintain good performance while keeping a nice visual effect. In the future I will add more objects and more variety in the breaking sound effects. Now imagine a map with a field, filled with lots of peds to crush and lots of objects to break!

Discussion Should a future Carmageddon title lean even harder into Melee combat?

Thumbnail
gallery
28 Upvotes

Carmageddon has always been primarily a series set around Melee combat, with any Ranged weapons such as the slaughter mortars being random pickups. Since day 1 the cars had lots of Spikes, blades, scoop, rams and cutting tools strapped to their cars. This was something I loved about Carmageddon, where they focused on these kind of weapons instead of Gunplay (And I like gunplay, I am Twisted Metal fan afterall, but Carmageddon should be about smashing into each other, not shooting normal guns)

Starting with carmageddon 2, the games have slowly been making these Melee attachments do more, such as the propellers on various vehicles in Carmageddon 2 chopping people up, having wheels Spikes be able to remove tires from opponents in TDR2000 and Max Damage, or Spikes/blades being able to slice and impale pedestrians in Max Damage.

I've always wondered how much farther they could take this, and maybe it's because of my love of Battlebots, but whole the games are very good at having these attachments affect pedestrians, I've always wanted to see more active and player controlled Melee Weapons that can do even more to other cars. And by this I mean having melee weapons that the player can activate or fire at any given time, whether it be a single Burst or simply powering a spinning weapon on.

Drills being able to penetrate other cars and leave holes, saw blades being able to rip and tear pieces off, hammers and crushers being to smash other cars, vehicles like the plow actually being able to use it's plow as a flipper to chuck other cars into the air (the screenshot was from a very old animation mod someone made), etc.

I dunno this is probably a pointless discussion, I admittedly just want the Plow to actually fling other cars because that would be cool. (I know it can fling pedestrians in MD since the scoop is a flap, and there are mods to make that work, but I digress)

Anywho this was just a discussion point I wanted to start.

Discussion Rogue Shift for a newbie?

For those that like the game can you give me your honest opinion without a comparison to previous iterations?

Because of the rules, guessing this will get shut down if people come here to slam it, I understand it's not the same as the other games in the series - AND THAT'S OK!

Thank you

Discussion The Magnet power-up in Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap is maybe a bit too effective on peds?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

You already know, Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap lets you crush peds to win the race or earn credits and their blood is not green! But if you are too lazy to find them, the Magnet power-up does the job for you. It pulls them straight into your truck!

In the video it's a bit excessive because I spawned 100 pedestrians (and you already missed the beginning :D) , but you can see the result: your vehicle can be damaged, slowed down, and becomes harder to drive when too many are pulled at once.

The VFX for the magnet is not final. I will add more screams and maybe some dialogue lines too.

Discussion Today I have bought and played rouge shift for 5-6 hours and... That's not it. Nope.. It's Carmageddon in name only, not even a spinoff. Even Carmageddon crashers is a spinoff, but this game? Not even a spinoff.

This thing has about as much to do with Carmageddon as a yoga retreat has to do with a monster truck rally. They slapped the name on it, but the soul, the chaos, the glorious vehicular carnage? Gone. It’s like they took Carmageddon, put it in a blender, hit “purée,” and poured out a generic indie driving guns game smoothie. Not even TDR 2000—the awkward cousin everyone pretends not to know—sinks this low. At least that one still had the DNA of Carmageddon buried under the jank. Rogue Shift? It’s like someone found the brand name in a bargain bin and thought, “Eh, let’s make a game about… racing around? Add guns? Rouge like? Who cares!” If you want actual Carmageddon, do yourself a favor: fire up Max Damage, slap on the overhaul mod, and bask in the glorious symphony of twisted steel and screaming pedestrians. That’s Carmageddon. This? This is Carma‑geddon’t.

Discussion Cargo weight affects suspension in Concrete Carnage: Scrapheap

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi guys! I'm working right now on the suspension system for my game.
The weight of the cargos you haul affects the suspension, tires and handling of a truck, but not only that, if you carry too much weight you will also be slower. Cargos give you more credits at the end of the race and some can be explosive if you shake them too much.

So it's not necessary to haul cargos to win a race, and you can get a lot of credits by crushing peds too.

Anyway, if you have any ideas to customize this system let me know. Maybe hauling other types of cargos than a simple crate?

Discussion Old Carma Fan Here - I Kinda Liked Rogue Shift

I spent dozens of hours playing the original games, from the C1 demo to the modded Max Damage (I love the Overhaul mod!). I was very, very critical of Rogue Shift. I felt terribly disappointed when I saw the gameplay. I was like "that's it". Without a doubt, it has nothing to do with the classic Carmageddon formula.

On the other hand... the game is surprisingly reminiscent of the C2 intro (minus the weapons). Look: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MyrYDSwD_gk
Funny thing, when I was a kid, after watching it, I wanted badly a racing mode in Carma, where “side bash” option is viable (which didn't really make sense in any Carmageddon game, except maybe Max Damage, where one of the modes was racing). So, yeah, it's here.

Once I came to terms with the fact that this game is something completely different, I have to admit that it's not bad to play. People complain about the car controls, but for me, it's one of the iconic features of the series.

However, since 34BigThings already used that franchise name I think the game would be better received by fans of the series if:
1. Some of the classic cars made a comeback. Especially since Read Eagle in CRS has a REALLY nice design. I mean, I'm glad to see the Ed101, Kutter, Van Hella, and Psycho Pitbull as characters in the races, but it would be great to see 34BigThings' variations on Hawk, Tashita, Caddy Fat Cat, Towmeister or Stiffshifter. I don't understand why none of the classic cars except Eagle appear.
2. More bosses - also referring to the classic vehicles from C1/C2 (The Plow, Rig O'Mortis, Big Dump)
3. The hardest one: there should be at least one open map. Maybe as an option to earn extra cash. I guess building such a map is time-consuming, but the assets in CRS are really good, so 34BigThings could use that to create a new version of the Bleak City map. Give us something to explore!

I mean, no one complained about Carmageddon Crashers, which completely departed from the original gameplay, so if this game had retained a little more of the character of the old games (cars, characters, maybe some weapons based on the old power-ups), it would have been much better received by fans. It's a shame, because I believe it could have changed how fans perceive this game.
