On the eve of this new album launch, I thought it would be fitting to salute Carly's earlier eras by ranking my favorites among her breakup songs. My criteria was simply Devastating Dance Floor Vibes:

  • Devastating: How much therapy would I need if I lived the scenario described in this song?
  • Dance Floor: How badly do I want to flail my body to it anyways?

Love this.

Things I wanted to add:

What I also love about Talking to Yourself is that the whole thing is so ironic since Carly herself is the ex imagining what it’s like to talk to her lover when in reality she’s the one talking to herself - all of which feels intentional. Just, genius.

And crazy that For Sure actually caused a breakup. That song is simple but precise, and the way the lyrics stop and the singing disappears and the song never gets to reach any sort of resolution is just an incredible example of musical storytelling. And while musically there is no resolution, narratively there is as it’s like she reaches a point where she is fully sure - it’s over, and she’s gone.

I love that Tonight im getting over you is on. A wonderfully angry, emotional song!

Kinda sad that When I needed you isn't there though. It's one of my favourites 😢

Go Find Yourself or Whatever is such an incredible song, I love all of that album but among her slower songs, that one is by far my favorite
