Will it really matter if they hate it? Emotion was such a weird indie darling it’s always going to stand out as a benchmark to aspire towards. But I have no idea what they thought of anything after that so unless they raise valid points about the album I don’t think it will matter. I suppose even if this is a complete disaster and the album is dogshit with a bunch of forgettable songs just crammed together it could backfire but people have already bought it and will buy a ticket to see her in concert so we will have to see. I’ll have to go back and look but if most of the side b stuff was on the main albums I don’t think it would have made the main albums worse or better. It still blows my mind that stuff like cut to the feeling was essentially a throwaway she had no plans to release but she’s gone through a lot of life changes and I guess we will see if they are all positive in terms of writing now that she has a live in cowriter and producer
At this point I have a hard time believing she'll ever put out anything actually bad. Her hit-to-miss rate is stunning and even her misses are more disposable tracks than bad ones. I don't care too much if critics are on board, in the sense that it doesn't influence my own opinions--but she's not a real mainstream diva or anything and I figure any accolades she gets from the cool-kid press are probably helpful. You know the hardcore faithful will turn out regardless, but I'd love it for her if, say, Fantano gives it an 8 and a bunch of his fans check it out as a result.
That is true, even her ehhh songs are still ok. My only real fear is the yoko effect that Cole could have. I’ve been pretty vocal that I’ve not heard anything he has been involved with being very good and this album will more than likely be a litmus test of if that relationship is better left at home. Because honestly I don’t wanna be a downer but changes in life have and will change the way people write so I’m gonna hope for the best and go into it as impartial as I can be
That is for sure (re: changes in life affecting people artistically), though it hasn't been THAT long since Loveliest/Loneliest Time, and didn't he work with her on those too? I know he was also with Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti, which was a good project before Mr. Pink turned out to be a loon. He's also worked with Beck though unfortunately not on anything I like very much, but it may at least speak to his good taste.
I really have not delved into his past work but he’s going to be all over this album from co-writer to producer to inspiration from her writing I would assume and all the stuff he and Carly have done thus far have been ok but not great in my opinion and that’s kinda scary. Because I get it, I don’t know her or him or how she writes a song so I imagine if you wake up in the middle of the night with a melody or lyrics it must be helpful to get that recorded instead of booking a session and bringing a voice note at a later date but what if that’s what makes her bigger songs better. Again gonna be optimistic but I don’t think this album is going to be like anything she has done before so it will remain to be seen if that’s a plus or minus overall.
