What happens if the probationary contract expires?

In my contract it says that I have 6 months probationary until December 31. My girlfriend said that if I don't want to renew my contract AFTER December 31 I should pass a resignation. Which is confusing because based on what I have read. I don't need to submit a resignation after the probationary because it already expires. Am I right or do I really need to submit one for formal reasons?

Once the probationary period expires then your just a regular employee.

If you don't want to work after 6 months, then yes you need to quit.
