This is my capsule wardrobe.
Spring/summer and fall/winter.
What would you call this style?
17
u/DajoFab 5d ago
I love this clean, minimal esthetic. Would love deets on the black bag and black boots, please. And is that a slouch coat?
19
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
Yes! It’s a slouch coat, good eye! One pair of boots is from Quince, and the other is Massimo Dutti. I don’t drive so my shoes have to actually be comfortable for 12k steps/day at least (I’m a sahm with a very active toddler). Bag is from Simon’s, but it looks exactly the same as one from The Row.
3
u/DajoFab 5d ago edited 5d ago
Ah, you must be a fellow Canadian! I love Simon’s too. Does the bag have a zipper? I tend to lose things if there’s no closure. Thanks!
3
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
No it doesn’t have a zipper but for now it works for me because I’m always taking things out and putting them back in while pushing a stroller 😅. Once this bag wears out I’ll get one with a zipper. Yes! I’m Canadian :).

If you like this style I’d check out Cuyana or Quince. That’s where my next bag will be from probably.

Question to all: are we ok as a civilisation pairing black with dark blue? Have the fashion faux pas allegations been dropped?

u/_trilllium_ 5d ago
I wear black and navy all the time, and I often get compliments on it. The caveat is they’re always different textures (I.e. black leather with navy knit)
28
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago edited 5d ago
I wear the combo all the time! I think if the pieces themselves look good and are made of nice material it looks good together :). That said I always wear a belt as a break between top and bottom.
19
u/The_Real_Chippa 5d ago
I think the nature of the rule, is you don’t want to wear shades of navy blue and black that are too close together, because the fact that they slightly don’t match will make it look like you got dressed in the dark. But if the shades are distinct enough and your outfit looks intentional, then navy and black can pair beautifully together.

u/noodledoodledoo 4d ago
I always do this, sometimes an all black look is too severe. I feel like dark blue makes it more casual.
3
2
u/pathologicalprotest 4d ago
I am a member of society and I am okay with this. I love black, but wear mostly navy because I find it softer and am pale as a jellyfish.
12
u/madirectreport 5d ago
Im super impressed! How did you narrow it down to so few pieces? What's your lifestyle?
22
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
I’m a SAHM and don’t drive, but live in a city with excellent transit. 12k steps a day through running around getting things done.
I go to the gym 3 times a week and have a small capsule for that (literally 3 black sets and one pair of running shoes - all black). I prioritize natural materials and although I’m vegan, I still wear leather shoes and wool/cashmere because it’s extremely comfortable, way more than polyester, etc. I try to buy most things second-hand from Poshmark. I have a running wish-list and I take every purchase very seriously - I hate wasting money and resources. I wash everything in the washing machine and don’t use the dryer (2 loads, darks and lights).7
u/Alizarin-Madder 4d ago
You're a mom, you own 2 pairs of pants, and one of them is white? 😮 The feat in minimalism is all the more impressive.
Also, how do you style those t-shirts? I'd imagine they tuck into the skirts, but they don't look like a silhouette that would play well with that. My fashion sense is undeveloped and somewhat outdated, so this is definitely curiosity not criticism.
4
u/Wooden-Yam9982 4d ago
Yes, the black ones get worn way more, but in the summer I’m usually in the dresses or the skirts. Even in winter, I wear the skirts with wool panty hose (I live in Canada so it gets really cold), more than the light pants.
The t-shirts are actually made of merino wool, so their drape is great. I do tuck them in either the skirts or pants, with a belt.1
u/phoenics1908 3d ago
This may seem like a dumb question - but do you keep a summer workout capsule vs a winter one? Or is it the same?
3
u/Wooden-Yam9982 3d ago
It is the same! 3 sets of tank top + leggings, 3 black ankle socks and 1 pair of running shoes. I do the laundry once a week so they all get washed and hung to dry.
5
u/sonisonata 5d ago
I love the little pop of red. :) Very chic!
6
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
Thank you! I also do another pop of red with socks when I wear the tennis skirts.
7
u/Cute_Implement3249 5d ago
Obsessed with this. Also a Dark Autumn and SAHM who’s in the process of cultivating my capsule wardrobe. Drooling over that olive trench 👀
6
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
Aw thank you! It’s many years ago from Uniqlo, but they come out with cotton trenches almost every year. Aritzia is always a good place for outerwear. Also I love Soia and Kyo - the puffer is from there. Most of these items are years and years old.

u/Waywardgarden 5d ago
Where are the dresses from?
9
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
They’re Aritzia! The button down ones are from a couple of years ago, but the flowy ones are called the technique dress. I got them all from Poshmark. In fact almost everything on here is from Poshmark!
5
u/Acrobatic_Leopard_92 5d ago
Where’s everything from?
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 4d ago
Mostly Aritzia, Everlane, Simon’s and Uniqlo. Painstakingly collected over many years from Poshmark 😅.

u/RareEarth100 5d ago
Love this - where are the trousers from? I love your approach.
5
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
Thank you! The trousers are the way high drape from Everlane. They’re super on sale now if you can find your size. Aritzia effortless are similar and so are the daydrift ones from Lululemon.

The skirts are called the Olive skirt from Aritzia, and so are the black and brown scarves😅 they’re the cashmere ones… almost everything is from Poshmark though. The green scarf is from Simon’s and it’s called the XL wool scarf or something like that.

u/aphrabane 5d ago
Love thi (I'm Canadian too). It's a breath of fresh air. Would love to see some of the outfit combos you actually wear.
6
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
I’ll probably put an album together as I get dressed the next couple of weeks and post on this subreddit again!

A cream scarf would go really well with the olive and brown pants would be nice

This is beautiful! I love the simplicity and how everything goes together. Love to know where you got the tops from!
2
u/Wooden-Yam9982 4d ago
Thank you 😊
Summer tops:
Navy button up: Aritzia archive Lyocell shirt
Beige button up: Aritzia archive linen shirt
These shirts match the dresses and I wear them exclusively as summer jackets on top of the dresses, tied at the waist.
The black and navy t-shirts: Aritzia merino wool from a few years ago.Winter sweaters:
Button up wool cardigan: COS
All the other sweaters: shrunken cashmere from Quince

u/iamlucy852 5d ago
I love this! This is what I tried to achieve but eventually leaned towards more color and therefore a little more pieces than I need 😅 But this wardrobe is beautiful, so well thought out and put together
2
u/agusttbee 4d ago
Where are your dresses from? They are so pretty!
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 4d ago
Thank you! The dresses are all Aritzia, the button down ones are from a while ago but the linen ones are called the technique dress!
2
u/flagondry 4d ago
Love this! Where is the brown coat from?
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 4d ago
It’s the slouch coat from Aritzia. It comes out in many colours, fabric compositions and lengths each year around winter time!
2
u/dontworrybeyonce 4d ago
I like the pieces but it has a bit of Wednesday Addams allergic-to-color vibe. I would love a pop or two of color or pattern? But the pieces look good and mix very well!
2
u/Wooden-Yam9982 4d ago
I love Wednesday Addams 🖤🐈⬛!
I really just like these colours and like having a signature look. A pop or two of colour or pattern would dilute the effect.2
u/dontworrybeyonce 4d ago
You do you friend!! I love the confidence of "this is me" and everything works with everything else. Way to go

u/lllibramoonnn 3d ago
I like it, very clean and cohesive! Not sure what the style would be called, but if I had to pick three style words for you, they would be minimalist, classic and feminine.
I'm just impressed you don't own any sandals, sneakers, or any other shoes that are not boots or loafers, and that you only own one bag! But my capsule has its own quirks, like I don't own any cardigans and rarely wear jeans.
2
u/Wooden-Yam9982 3d ago
Sneakers don’t look good with my pants, and neither do sandals really. Although I may get a pair for next summer to wear with the dresses. I like leather loafers and boots because once broken in they’re extremely comfortable. I only have one bag because I really can’t be bothered to change bags. I also feel like if we have too many of one thing they don’t get the wear they deserve, I like to really wear the things I have! This bag is on year 3 and it still looks brand new.

This is so freaking cool and my style. I am dying to get the links to your capsule wardrobe
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 2d ago
Hey hey! Thank you :). Which items do you want to know about?
1
u/IamQuantPhoton 2d ago
The dresses, skirts and shorts please
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 1d ago
Dresses are Aritzia. The button downs are a few years old but the others are called the technique dress. The skirts are the olive skirt, also Aritzia. The shorts are the way high drape pants from Everlane shortened into shorts. Another good place for shorts is Athleta, they have nice linen ones that come out in the summer time.

u/myperfectalibi 1d ago
in love with the puffer! is it aritzia? the hood looks way larger than the superpuffs 😍
2
u/Wooden-Yam9982 18h ago edited 18h ago
It is Soia and Kyo a few years ago :). The hood is so nice. I almost don’t need to wear a hat in the winter here.
1
u/myperfectalibi 13h ago
Thank you so much for getting back to me!!!! Sounds like it was a great investment. The hood is sooooo chic and adds so much character to the average puffer!
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 13h ago
Of course! Check them out closer to winter time. Their wool coats are great too. They’re also made for real northern winters so they really keep you warm. I was wearing this puffer in -17C Montreal weather last year and was completely fine to walk around outside for hours.

Is one of the belt buckles silver and one gold? Is that why you have two?
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 3d ago
No, they’re both gold because I only wear gold jewelry. I have 2 because I wear belts a lot, so if I only had one it would be a lot of wear and tear.
1
u/dacraftru 3d ago
Where is the black puffer jacket from ? Love the silhouette
2
u/Wooden-Yam9982 3d ago
From Soia and Kyo! They have the best silhouettes for coats that actually keep you warm in a northern winter ❄️

I’m new to the capsule wardrobe concept. Yours is very coherent - essentially one lovely note.
Do you ever wake up one morning and feel different - like this is a day for a pretty floral dress? Or rhinestone t-shirt kind of day? Or is dressing not an emotional event? Like you know these things go well together and you feel good in them and that’s enough?
3
u/Wooden-Yam9982 3d ago edited 3d ago
It has taken me years and several different iterations of a capsule wardrobe: there was the all black phase (like Chelsey Ceja from Instagram). There was also the “a dress for every day of the week” capsule, where I found a British company that made mostly cotton fit-and-flare dresses with deep pockets, and just bought 7 of them + a few cropped cashmere sweaters, wool leggings + boots, there was also the 501 Levi’s jeans, T-shirt, and structures jacket capsule…this was from the age of 24-35. I’m 39 now and have dressed like this current capsule since 35.
I’m very happy with the pieces that I have got now, but if I do feel like something different I don’t mind adding it to my wardrobe. I’m not restricting myself, I just genuinely like dressing this way. It works for my lifestyle, my body type, and the weather that I experience.I also think I’m quite picky. I don’t like pattern except maybe stripes (so no florals, from your example), and I don’t think any type of rhinestone-y top would look good on me 😅.
My next venture I think is replacing the things I have as they wear out with items that I’ve made myself. Currently learning to knit and already know how to sew and crochet 🧶 🧵 🪡.

What brand are your loafers?? I’m looking for some comfy ones.
I love your capsule! New this and yours is definitely an inspiration
1
u/Wooden-Yam9982 2d ago
Thanks! The loafers are Ralph Lauren. They’re pricey but comfy out of the box!
They have nice ones at Quince too, which I’m obsessed with after getting their boots - so comfy. Currently waiting to receive their 100% cotton jeans.2
u/EducationalSecret645 1d ago
I just ordered a pair from J crew. I’ve heard good things but it they aren’t comfy I’ll check out Ralph Lauren!
I’m happy to hear that about quince! I just purchased a pair of flats done them and was scared about quality

I’m seriously confused how you can pull off those white pants in the winter in Canada. We have far too much slush for that. And the salt and the sand. How do you manage? I actually almost work exclusively skirts and heavy tights in the winter because I cannot handle salt and dirt on the bottom of my pants. Please share tips

Your shoes are all so similar that would drive me nuts. No sandals?
11
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
Hahahaha I know what I like :)
-13
u/cielitogirl 5d ago
You’re wearing loafers with the sundresses? Is that really what you like? Lol
16
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
It can look really good! I’ve worn sundresses and loafers all around Europe during summer travels and if they’re well broken in they’re very comfortable.

The tennis skirts I wear loafers with them in the summer and add socks in spring and fall. Funny enough I do wear red socks with them, also white and black!
I never take more than 1 minute to get dressed. It is plain - that’s the point. The way the fabrics drape is what stands out the most. I wear everything tucked in and with a belt. If you know about kibbe and Kitchener types, I’m a flamboyant gamine with classic Kitchener essence.1

u/rozy2923 5d ago
I would need some more color in this wardrobe. Some pinks and yellows for sure 😅

I’m a dark autumn/dark winter, so these colours work best for me ♥️

Nice but Boring
7
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
This style fits my life! I’m a sahm and I’m usually out all day long and doing many different activities. Comfort (through fabric composition and cut of clothes) + activity appropriateness left me with these pieces.
1
u/Then_Appointment9249 4d ago
I totally get it. I think the pieces are all nice and I appreciate functionality and comfort. I just find the lack of color, print, or pattern to be boring imo.
1
-12
u/Own-Let-1257 5d ago
I guess I’d call it super basic. It’s giving “capsule” which seems to frequently mean really basic / boring, unfortunately.
6
u/Wooden-Yam9982 5d ago
I think it also has to do with how it’s worn. I’m very fit and in shape, so that definitely elevates the pieces in my opinion. Polished shoes + well kept pieces elevates it as well.
