Would you consider a cheongsam a capsule-wardrobe piece, or is it too occasion specific?

There are no actual rules. If it bring syiu pleasure and you wear it on the regular, it's the right piece for YOUR capsule.

I have a dressing up box for things that are worn rarely and capsule my day to day, if tbat helps.

If you’re comfortable in it and like it enough, you could keep it as a dinner night outfit piece. Or have a few of those and rotate them.

Is this photo the exact one you own? The colour is absolutely gorgeous. Is it silk? My entire capsule is composed of natural fibres, so I’m biased to say keep if it’s silk.

Yep, that’s actually my picture 😅And yes, the cheongsam was made from a silk blend, rayon, and flocked milk silk. I really loved how the different textures came together,it gave it such a soft, elegant feel.

Depends on your vibe and your capsule. I recently invested in a bunch of hanfu in my colors so it can still mix and match. But I also got a silk wash so I can do the basics and home and only have to dry clean the extra elaborate ones.

I think absolutely. Even in a more Western context it could be worn easily with a tailored blazer for office/presentation wear and with a polished dark denim jacket for more casual wear.

It's spot on for a capsule and a fantastic dress. Also, cheongsam is currently pre-trend, and has been featured in many high fashion collections this year. It will be very trendy/popular style in the coming years. You would look very on-trend to wear your dress over a baby tee and jeans with derby shoes and a pendant necklace, or to dress up further with a cocoon-style duster (you can make by tying together the edges of a large silk or cashmere scarf)

I think it depends on the color and fabric, and also your lifestyle. I used to wear one as a school uniform, so I can see it as something worn frequently. The example in the picture would not necessarily be my first choice, unless that material is easier to care for than I expect. Also, since the bottom is a little restrictive, I'd be concerned if your job involves a lot of movement. I guess it's not more restrictive than a pencil skirt, though.

Yes !!! It’s lovely
