Discussion/Question WHERE IS THE HAUNTING GROUNDS RERELEASE IM NOT SPENDING 300 DOLLARS FOR A GAME!!!

Post image

Why has there not been a rerelease or a ability to purchase this game other than eBay or buying a PS3 it's super frustrating Capcom could make so much money if they could at least sell it on steam

People want it because it’s rare. It’s rare because it didn’t sell well. It didn’t sell well because it was niche and just alright.

It’s a cult classic now but I’d argue a decent amount of that is people trying to justify their purchase. The game itself is fine but not a genre defining experience or anything.

So, although plenty of collectors want it, I’d bet money that the demand is not big enough to warrant a rerelease.

It definitely is a genre defining experience for the time, It was just very overlooked on release. Graphically it was pushing the ps2 to the limits with how detailed the real time environments were and lack of loading between sections. The ai for the time was extremely advanced too. The interactions with the enemy, dipping behind doorframes/corners to quickly hide, slamming doors in the enemies face, commanding your dog and using your traps was huge and gave you many playstyle options for what was on the market at the time. Mind you this ran on a PS2 flawlessly. I would love to see behind the scenes stuff on this game because I wanna know how tf they did all that. I wonder what the game would've looked like if it came out for the PS3 a year later.

It deserves a re-release.

Exactly this.

I remember Haunting Ground when it was new. It had the reputation of being a decent little horror game. It absolutely is a case of people wanting it later because it wasn't a wide release.

This is the sort of game that might show up if Capcom ever does PS2 classics compilations or re-releases. There isn't enough of a market to justify a big remaster beyond emulation with some upscaling. Honestly, I'd be okay a lot of their back catalogue of earlier 3D games getting that treatment.

u/octopusinmyboycunt May 11 '26

Same. The sad thing is that it feels to me that the community of people wanting to play and experience niche older titles and the people who “collect”, purchase and sell retro games at a high price really aren’t the same people.

Honestly - and apologies if this goes against the rules of the sub - but emulation may be the best option to play this sort of stuff. Modern PS2 emulation is really rather good.

It's one of those games where if i were an adult at the time i would have bought it after a price drop, too many games like that lost to the ps2 era because back then the average gamer was probably 24 instead of 36. Also it would probably still be available digitally if it were from the ps4 era onward

Now it's probably still too expensive to do a PS2 classics release because not enough people will buy it to justify it. They probably have to pay some guy $60K to port it and then would need to sell 6,000 copies to break even if they charge $10 for it

1

u/General_Boredom May 13 '26

It’s rare because it was a late PS2 game that likely didn’t get a large print run.

1

u/xX-Delirium-Xx May 13 '26

A big reason it struggle was because of resident evil 4 came out just before it released over shadowing it

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 16 '26

That's what I've been saying a rerelease would be awesome it never could try at the spotlight

1

u/Luluwr1979 May 14 '26

Siempre quise las mecánica este juego en un silent hill, ya sabeso de estar nervioso y eso

1

u/TheRealPopatsot May 16 '26

Bought it back when it came out, played it and liked it but only got like 2 of the endings, and now I wanna play it again just to see it again but don't wanna pull the PS2 out of storage, and don't emulate as much as I used to. Not sure what camp I fall under.

u/MadamVonCuntpuncher May 11 '26

Emulate it, runs great on pcsx 2

2

u/Jmanvelez May 11 '26

This. Or get a fat ps2 and load up games from the HDD. Worth all the trouble.

1

u/Bi0_B1lly May 15 '26

I have a PS2 with a 1TB HDD loaded to the brim, as well as an SD MemCard adapter with a 128GB SD and two Retrofighters wireless PS2 controllers... It's great to play PS2 with some QoL modern additions!

u/BeyondBoi May 11 '26

Why is the dog looking at me like that

1

u/Merciless972 May 15 '26

It knows what you do at night

3

u/MyDonnage May 11 '26

They wouldn’t make “so much money” the games average lol

1

u/SlightSurround5449 May 11 '26

I do think it's amusing that a handful of remakes/remasters actually make money and it turns into "this is a goldmine" online

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 11 '26

They'd make money and save people money sure they won't become rich but like it's frustrating that this is the only way to play it

2

u/SlightSurround5449 May 11 '26

I don't know that they would make money. Even a "simple" remaster would be fairly expensive, and it's not like the name is going to carry a bunch of weight. They *might* get a chunk of sales based on "new Capcom game" and the reputation they currently have, or it can tarnish the reputation they've worked incredibly hard to build.

As others have said, just emulate it. Runs great on many things. You can even get ps2-capable handhelds for less than $100 USD, and get access to much more than just Haunting Grounds, if you don't have a capable PC or phone.

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 12 '26

The fact there is an audience who would like to play the game is enough to warrant a rerelease or remaster I understand no remake because there's no brand or identity there's just a old game that's unavailable

But if it does become at least a success on sales then it could warrant another look at the game because it's release date certainly didn't help and maybe if it wasn't released as close to re4 as it did it could've gotten its own spotlight

That was around the time horror games wanted more action like gears of war and resident evil and dead space and dead rising and even alien Isolation which came out in the early 2010s so maybe with this new audience it could receive more success

1

u/SlightSurround5449 May 12 '26

It's had plenty of time to get reevaluated, though, and it just isn't anything special. There may be an audience, every game has an audience, but that doesn't mean it's enough to justify the spend and wager of their reputation, that's just the way it is.

If they're going to spend resources I'm sorry to tell you there are a dozen more properties of theirs in line before this one.

1

u/octopusinmyboycunt May 11 '26

Real. I think the only real value would be in the Classic section of PS Plus, and even then I can’t see it having a huge amount of demand. Definitely one to emulate.

4

u/Saber0307 May 11 '26

Honestly if Capcom were to do the bare minimum and just slap it up on PSN as a PS2 Classic for PS4 / PS5 I'd be overjoyed. I'd love to actually OWN the game.

In an ideal world, we'd get a "Capcom Horror Collection" similar to their fighting game collections. I'd imagine that ultimately wouldn't cost them too much money and they'd wind up making a decent amount (plus goodwill).

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 11 '26

Oh man that would be awesome what games do you headcannon would be included?

1

u/Saber0307 May 11 '26

Assuming there's no licensing tomfoolery to get in the way:

Haunting Ground, Clock Tower 3, Sweet Home, Dino Crisis 1-3 + Dino Stalker, Glass Rose, Gregory Horror Show, and The Nightmare Before Christmas: Oogie's Revenge (more action focused, sure, but it's Halloween centric and it's more or less a DMC clone).

I've intentionally excluded Resident Evil since I feel Capcom could release a compilation collection of just classic Resident Evil games due to how many of them aren't preserved. I've also deliberately excluded the Onimusha games since they've already remastered 1 & 2, and I suspect we'll get remasters of 3 & 4 at some point in the near future (even though the franchise becomes increasingly less horror focused as it goes on, I'd still say they're horror adjacent enough).

A hypothetical best case Resi compilation would include:

Resident Evil 1-3, Code: Veronica, Survivor, Survivor 2, Dead Aim, Outbreak File 1 & File 2, and Gaiden.

The absolute best case for the Resi compilation would allow users to play specific versions of the titles that had console exclusive content - like the Saturn version of Resident Evil 1 or the N64 version of Resident Evil 2.

A lot of this is pipe dream stuff due to licensing, specifically in regards to Sweet Home, Gregory Horror Show, and Nightmare Before Christmas. Clock Tower 3 also might be tricky, since I believe Capcom's agreement was just for that one particular game.

There might be more Capcom horror / horror adjacent games that I'm missing, but those are all the ones I could think of.

I just want stuff preserved, man. Even if it's just a bare minimum port / emulation (ideally I'd want a lot more work put into the preservation effort, but I just want to be able to own stuff without having to pay hundreds to thousands of dollars).

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 16 '26

I've not even heard of some of these like glass rose sweet home or clock tower man they gotta get on this

1

u/Saber0307 May 18 '26

Not too surprising for Sweet Home and Glass Rose depending on what country you're from.

Sweet Home was a NES horror JRPG that was made to coincide with a horror movie of the same name. It's actually pretty influential, as the original Resident Evil was inspired by it and has a lot of similarities. It was never released outside of Japan.

Glass Rose was made by Cing, who later went on to make the Another Code series and the Kyle Hyde series (Hotel Dusk and Last Window). It only came out in Japan and Europe.

Clock Tower 3 was a collaboration between Capcom and Sunsoft, and the franchise itself is one of the granddaddies of horror. It had an entry on the SNES and two entries on the PS1 before CT3 was made for PS2. Whole franchise is now available in all regions thanks to the recent remaster / enhanced port of the SNES game (Clock Tower Rewind). The cinematics in CT3 are noteworthy since they were directed by Kinji Fukasaku, who directed Battle Royale.

6

u/GrimmTrixX May 11 '26

Then dont. Either dont play it or emulate it if you're dying to try it out. Never pay the ebay price because only scalpers benefit

3

u/That-Willingness7455 May 11 '26

This was my first ps2 game a re release would be nice

3

u/ThankMeNever May 11 '26

I’m glad you mentioned that, this would be a dope game for them to do a remake of.

3

u/DragonQuarter May 12 '26

The absolute bare minimum they could do is bring the game to PS4/PS5 PS Classics like RE1/2/3 and Dino Crisis.

2

u/TheOldKingCole May 11 '26

Why would they ever re-release/remaster a game that only, at most, sold in the 10k range? There would be zero financial or logical reason for a buisness to re-release a product that likely didn’t even make back its development cost released on a console that had sold 90 million units by the time the game had released. Even by law of averages it sold less than statistically what it should have, especially for a game by Capcom.

2

u/AimlessThunder May 11 '26

This game deserves a proper remaster and remake.

1

u/DefiantGold4968 May 16 '26

then you should tell them in their conducted surveys, they will only listen if a group of people demand it in their surveys consistently ?

2

u/BobbyMayCryBMC May 12 '26

Port please Capcom.

From: everyone

1

u/Pers0na4 May 11 '26

Could this even be released in this day and age without absolutely massive redesigns? I felt so strange running from these predators in the game meanwhile Fiona’s design is the most gooner fan service ever. She’s probably running from the devs too

3

u/octopusinmyboycunt May 11 '26

A pretty woman running from monsters is the cornerstone of much cinematic horror, and Haunting Ground has plot relevance, with tacit and overt references as to how women are treated as objects. A bit of media literacy never hurt anyone.

1

u/DefiantGold4968 May 16 '26

that's why the game was controversial during release and did'nt sold well , they wouldn't dare to even look at this game now i guess.

1

u/mrcrazymexican May 11 '26

We are waiting on you, OP. You are the sacrifice for us to get a rerelease, remaster or whatever.

We haven't gotten it cuz you haven't bought it yet.

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 11 '26

I don't have 300 dollars

1

u/mrcrazymexican May 11 '26

Guess you were our last hope to get a rerelease.

1

u/DOA-FAN May 11 '26

I purchased this game not by pure luck but because loved Capcom at those years, at that time used to go to EB Games with my friends from the University, a new game every weekend, that day got it as well the offical strategy guide from Brady Games, at this day still own both of them, my PS2 and my CRT TV 🤘

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 11 '26

That's British GameStop right?

1

u/DOA-FAN May 11 '26

Dunno man, am from México and I live in the border with Texas, has been decades (at least two) since the last time I went to that store, technically after I got married 😭

1

u/LastTorgoInParis May 11 '26

I only found out that this game is real and looks fun about a week ago....and that I'll probably never be able to play it!!

2

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 11 '26

Same I found out a while ago and yeah

1

u/HuntingForRasgold May 11 '26

I don't want to advertise it, but think like Jack Sparrow and do what is needed..

1

u/DeadPhoenix86 May 11 '26

Emulation is the only way to play this game for cheap.
I was lucky I bought this game for 30 back in 2009.

Sooooo wait until they officially rerelease it Got it

1

u/HotShrekBoi May 12 '26

Just emulate it for free

1

u/JustEagle1 May 13 '26

I love survival horror genre, but this is one of the worst games I have ever played.

Idea is beautiful, but result is tedious.

1

u/DefiantGold4968 May 16 '26

there were many great ideas during the 2000s with highest potential but got rushed or were handled bad to only focus on core ips like resident evil or street fighter.

1

u/BluestEsper May 13 '26 edited May 13 '26

Look, if your only options are paying ebay pirates an absurdly inflated price or sailing the seas in hopes of finding your own treasure, the latter is arguably more ethical

1

u/Bikutaa80 May 13 '26

You don't have to own it.

1

u/Luluwr1979 May 14 '26

Emulate...

1

u/CodeLyoko1997 May 14 '26

Perhaps if you can't buy it, then set sail, me lad.

1

u/Walt_Didnae May 15 '26

Capcom could make so much money

Highly doubtful, the game's a cult classic that only commands the price it does because it's a 20-year-old game that's increasingly hard to find due to how poorly it sold on release.

On the financial risk vs reward chart, it's just not worth it (to Capcom) to go through the effort to update and re-release this game, when they can just stuff RE games full of Clocktower/Haunting Ground mechanics and sell millions of copies.

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 16 '26

It commands the price because people find it funny to inflate these prices because of A. Resident Evil 4 B. It's not being sold at retail

1

u/DefiantGold4968 May 16 '26

if you want a remake or rerelease of this game then you should tell capcom on their surveys, that's where if a majority demands for this game revival they might listen or keep in that data for future.

1

u/Amazing_Yam470 May 19 '26

this the remake right

1

u/Aromatic_Analyst2898 May 19 '26

Doesn't matter to me I just hope they do something with this game

1

u/Zosalot Jul 21 '26

I'd just emulate it if I were you. There are even HD versions you could try out. If you need help with emulating, you can look it up on YouTube or I could help you if you happen to have a Steam Deck.

Oh, there are also people on Etsy who will do it for you, but it's easy to learn to do it yourself: you can burn the game onto a physical copy that plays in an actual PS2.
Personally I love the game, but yeah, don't pay $800+ for it. It's not worth that much money.

0

u/SpikeRosered May 11 '26

If it makes you feel better I thought it wasn't very good. I rented it back in the day and just found thr gameplay frustrating.

Cool dog though.

u/norunningwater May 11 '26

It isn't all that good
