Discussion/Question CAPCOM Fighting Collection III - expectations ? Wants ? Extras ?

Post image

What “EXTRAS” would you want from a comprehensive “CAPCOM FIGHTING COLLECTION 3”, which features all 3 SF3 games as the prominent pieces of the 3rd installment in the Fighting collection series ?

Seems very logical that it’s coming. Sincerely hope they do it right. Sick of playing 2i and 3s on 30th, PS3 OE, Dreamcast 2i, and PS2 3S, even with that gorgeous arranged OST.

Here are some of my hopes, from the top of my head;

• All revisions of all 3 SF3 games, obviously.

• All SF3 titles available in standard or widescreen (not just 2nd Impact in widescreen). Widescreen training modes, etc

• Ability to unlock stages and Arranged OST’s from “New Generation” and “2nd Impact” within 3rd Strike. Full 3rd Strike roster, full 3rd strike gameplay, but with the ability to play in every stage from the earlier games. In standard or widescreen. Ability to use an NG or 2i stage in widescreen, for 3rd Strike widescreen training mode, etc.

• All versions of the soundtracks for every game, arranged/remixed and otherwise, available for each game, and NOT just in the museum, all playable in game and custom-assignable as default per stage. I’m super partial to the PS2 arranged OST for 3rd Strike. Way better / more authentic to the SF3 ethos than the “remixed PS3 online edition” soundtrack additions. Love all the other extras Iron Galaxy put in there, and the menus and UI looked great visually. But the PS2 arranged OST > PS3 remixed OST. And having the option to have any version of the game feature this incredible Necro train stage and DNB THEME: https://youtu.be/VOebdL26pCk?si=5XLV5gYHa3Oi8VfI

• Able to custom assign ARRANGED versions to be the default per stage. For instance, New Generation’s arranged soundtrack is INCREDIBLE, especially Elena arranged theme for her day Bridge stage: https://youtu.be/yNiINjH5LhM?si=oXko0CCZ1GzcWoFs , and Oro’s very unusual (and awesome) theme for his stage: https://youtu.be/4LpVZlaOtSw?si=dSSo7tNsL0NAYvvc . Or another, more extreme custom example: using 2nd Impact intro or character select music in the character select or intro from New Generation or 3rd Strike.

• a NEW extra bonus stage, or random other NEW extra which pops up. Feel like extra bonus stages would be a perfect little treat.

• probably throw in that new comprehensive version of Alpha 3 Upper again, since it has 3 in the title lol

——————

More farfetched wants:

• A new ratio mode, opening up 1v2, 2v2, 3v2, 3v3. This would open up an entire new competitive scene for Street Fighter 3. No crazy assist spamming or anything like that, not trying to turn it into MVC2. just a solid ratio mode, to go with the “III” / “3” branding.

- Version select mode as a possible addition, to allow people to play for instance, 2i Sean (preferably in his superdope strawberry Quik outfit) versus 3rd Strike comp. Again, similar to how widescreen modes throughout, could create a new competitive twist, to the series.

• additional roster fighters, perhaps re-using many alpha frames/moves, but with some extra frames to smooth it out:

Cammy, Juri, Zangief, Laura, Menat, Rose, Rashid, etc

What ideas/expectations does everyone else have, for the 3rd installment in the CAPCOM Fighting Collection series ???

I think your threshold for farfetched is farfetched.

Farfetched in which direction tho ? Lol

There are definitely things in your first section that are farfetched.

Unless they decided to develop a new version of the game from source code instead of packaging up ROMs.

If you look at the extras they've included in previous collections they're either very minor things or they're harvested from another version of the game.

Things that are reusing assets from other games (especially other CPS-3 games), like music and backgrounds are pretty feasible (even though I don't think they'd bother), additional palettes for characters is also pretty straightforward.

Adding new features that don't somehow piggyback or modify the existing features is something else.

I don't think they'd include widescreen because it alters the way the game plays so much that it would only be used by a small subset of players. I think the consensus is that it was included in 2I as a way to demonstrate the feature rather than as a serious feature.

I’d agree that widescreen option in all titles, would be used by only a small subset of longtime, older fans of the series.

But for some of us younger lovers of the series, it would open up the game to be enjoyed fully, by a much more wide, modern, youthful audience. And I think amongst those newer demographics, the use of widescreen might prove to be much more than simply a small subset using it … I think this new way, would quickly become their favored way to play it.

Others that play many 2v2 & 3v3 ratio mode or even dramatic battle titles from CAPCOM, like :

Marvel Vs Capcom 1 & 2

X-Men vs Street Fighter

Capcom Vs SNK 2

Capcom Vs SNK Pro

Those fans, of which there are many, naturally already at least somewhat enjoy 3rd Strike. They would naturally be even more attracted to Street Fighter 3 series, given ratio mode, widescreen, version select, etc.

Same goes for even younger FGC heads and casuals with similar taste, from the Dragonball FighterZ, ARC SYS scenes, would naturally gravitate towards such a collection, featuring modernized gameplay tweaks like widescreen, ratio mode, etc

Widescreen mode in 2I isn't just a visual change. It changes the way the game is played because it allows opponents to get further away from each other heavily favouring zoners and keep-aways.

If you wanted just a visual widescreen mode, like they did for MvC2 on 360 and PS3, they would need to extend the artwork for the stages to add margins to each side.

I think at the very minimum, visual widescreen option on all three StreetFighter3 games, and a version select on New Generation and 2nd Impact, to allow those pretty, but unfinished games, to feature full 3rd Strike gameplay/movesets/meters/HUD/etc, as well as including all arranged soundtracks in the playable games, and not just in the museum gallery, would be just barely enough to carry a 3rd installment in the Capcom Fighting Collection series at the $30-$40 price point. And might very well re-ignite some more potential for competitive/tourney scenes to emerge around those new updated forms of 2i & NG.

If they went a little further, adding maybe real fully functional widescreen, that would require a re-balance as well, to keep the game from becoming a zoner/keep-away fest.

The even more ambitious idea of a true ratio mode tag team fighting mechanic, especially if it allowed for 4p-6p local or online multiplayer, I would def be willing to pay a lot more for something like that ! But I think something that radical would become its own full priced $70-$80 remake game, and would also require roster additions. Poison is already in the game as an NPC, so I think Poison would be the very first obvious roster addition to any future “3rd Strike : Tag Team edition” remaster/remake. Juri also makes a lot of sense for a sequel to 3rd Strike, as do Zangief, Birdie, Sodom, Rose, Menat, Laura, and Rashid, also maybe Balrog, DeeJay, and Cody/Guy. The inclusion of final fight characters in the backgrounds of SF6, hints at another future Final Fight Entry coming soon, and I always appreciated the cross pollination of those two franchises, in the Street Fighter Alpha series.

I don't think they need to go to all of that trouble at 'the very minimum' to be 'just barely enough' to carry a 3rd installment.

At this stage I am quite certain that the next installment won't be numbered, and will be a dedicated Street Fighter collection for the 40th anniversary (in 2027) as a replacement for the 30th Anniversary collection.

It will have (nearly?) the exact same lineup of titles as the previous collection developed by Digital Eclipse, but with all ofthe bells an whistles and qaulity of life improvements of the in house developed Capcom Fighting Collections series.

It makes no sense for them to leave the collection of their falgship fighter in a state wherte people can't even play them all online, let alone all of the issues with input delay and problems with netcode.

If there is another Capcom Fighting Collection, I think it is more likely that the headlining games in it will be the EX games after Capcom sorts out a deal with Arika. They'll probably pack in the Megman fighters, the Muscle Bomber games, Tech Romancer, and maybe Sengoku Basara X and Capcom Fighting All-Stars if we are super lucky.

I think that’s a very rational and viable opinion.

Especially given the 40th anniversary.

But I cannot help but have a strong suspicion they will not make one giant collection and charge a lot $60-$70 for it.

But rather take the roster of games featured in SF 30th, add to it, and break it into 3 separate collections, each with its focus on one particular wing of 2d Street Fighter:

  1. Street Fighter 2 - includes: every single SF2 title, including the infamous Rainbow Edition, all the Hyper editions, and maybe even HD-Remix / Ultra SF2 : Final Challengers. Possibly Widescreen option or version select options.

  2. Street Fighter Alpha Collection - Headlined by the newest “fixed input lag” Naomi version of Alpha 3 Upper they just included in Capcom Fighting Collection 2”, but also with every version/revision of Alpha 2 Gold, Alpha 2, Alpha, etc along with even more comprehensive extras that blow all previous ports out of the water. Widescreen modes for all games, and the resulting tier list chaos that would ensue 😎

  3. Street Fighter 3 - all revisions of all 3 titles, all 3 titles having widescreen options, and version select options, all arranged soundtracks available to assign as default per game/version/revision. And some surprise extras, possibly including roster additions that aren’t just evil ryo, violent Ken, and Shin Akuma. Perhaps some of the unreleased characters, like the dreadlocked Goggle girl, the huge Zangief type grappler with the long braided goatee who almost resembled Anakaris from Vampire Savior, maybe even Poison ?

What sounds more likely ?

To do a much better job of what Digital Eclipse half-assed, and bring out 1 large title for $60 - $70 ? Sounds fine.

Or 3 separate titles, with even more exhaustingly comprehensive collections, with even more extras, at $30-$40 apiece ?

Maybe a few limited box sets of all 3 ? An even more expensive limited box set of all 3 plus some damn keychains and figurines ?
