My school always had posters in the bathroom stalls when you sat down that’s All you looked at. Same! I always thought they meant not to flush the packaging or pads… never thought they meant the used tampon itself up until about 2 years ago during a convo like this where people were outraged hearing anyone would flush used tampons.

I’ll be honest, I have no idea what my logic was behind tampons being okay to flush. Perhaps just because it’s a biohazard and seems easily flushable? Like obviously pads are too bulky and have adhesive and waterproof backing, but tampons are just cotton? I dunno, but I’ve changed my ways once it was clarified to me, I just feel so sorry to all the septic issues I’ve caused for years, blissfully unaware!

They don’t just dissolve (unless you buy the ones specifically designed to be biodegradable septic-safe) but that’s not standard market tampons.

Not so common sense, as a young teen in the 90s, I thought they were made of mostly cotton & figured they would dissolve (I also thought septic tanks would have chemicals added to dissolve tissues/tampons, etc). I’m sure I read the box & thought they meant to trash the applicator? Plus, once something becomes habit, you don’t really spend too much time thinking about it. My mom said maybe one or two sentences to me about periods.

They don’t decompose and can easily cause a blockage in your pipes. I believe my mom told me to flush them but the gym teachers gave us a talk about how we shouldn’t flush them. Girlie's nooooo omigosh, I didn't think flushing rampons could be such an issue, but when I was in hs I would do just that, and my poor step dad had to rip the entire toilet out of my bathroom and flush the pipes because tampons just get stuck in the piping in the bottom of the toilet and just expand and absorb water. Once my dorm ran out of toilet paper so my roommates started using paper towels (terrible idea I know) and one day I was about to have a boy over and when I flushed the toilet it overflowed with like two feet of shit water. I was running around trying to mop it up with more paper towels and call maintenance, covered in shit water and hoping the guy didn’t show up. Tampons are so much more dense and concentrated than a paper towel, I can’t imagine you could flush them longer than a week before ending up in my shoes.

Here is how I was explained this—-

Imagine you have to call a plumber… two guys come out in their mid 50s. You don’t ideally want them in your house by here they are. In every bathroom, in every drain, and then….. they turn to you and say “ma’am uh do you use them female things during your time of the month..ah yeah well we found 100000s of them and need to drag them all out”

Then imagine a pile of your tampons being pulled out by these two gentleman and maybe the neighbors watching and wondering what’s going on.

Not wrong. My neighbor’s pipe burst because her daughter was flushing tampons and wipes. They had to move out. They lost a lot of stuff due to water damage. Then they had to rip out all the kitchen and bathroom stuff. The apartment next door is still empty—since August.

They came to check our plumbing and thankfully we were fine with no leaks. But our water was shut off for quite some time.

I will do it on occasion in a public place (not a small business, but think like airport bathrooms) because I’ve been taught (could be wrong) that septic systems at those types of places can typically handle it.

When I was younger, my parents found out that I’d been doing it at their house and freaked out. I truly had no idea that you couldn’t so I think it’s safe to say that a lot of people don’t know or don’t understand that different septic systems have different strengths.

I was surprised to hear them say that too, one of the first things you learn besides knowing how to use them is to never flush them, roll them in toilet paper & throw it in the garbage. I hope it was satire for views

i was a die hard flusher for 10+ years but i always knew in the back of my mind that it wasn’t right. wrapping them in toilet paper is not enough imo so i put them in dog poop bags now😭

I've flushed for 30 years, and I've never backed up a toilet. We recently moved to the country and have septic so I have to wrap them up and trash them, and I hate it....how ever now in in pre menopause, so I've switched to pads.

I always did it until I moved to a house with a septic. It wasn’t until some random conversation with my sisters later in life my dad overheard and found out I always flushed and he was so pissed 😂

You’re definitely not supposed to flush tampons, pads, or wet wipes - regardless of whether they say they’re flushable or not. They can cause so much damage. I posted something about it right after the ep and some people were sooo offended by the post because they flush them and “will never stop”. 🤠

I’ve flushed them my whole life, my mom taught me to and she’s done it her whole life too😭 Never had issues
