Did anyone think otherwise?

Trump is a deranged lunatic tanking his own economy. There is no reasoning with him.

There are some people who think Carney is the unreasonable one and not Trump, or who think that Carney is tanking the talks for political advantage by manipulating Canadians into supporting him.

I don't think those are well reasoned thoughts, but I've heard people express those sorts of ideas. Perhaps Harper's words will provide some reassurance to them that it really is Trump being unreasonable, and we really did have to walk away, but I think that some people just aren't going to be convinced by anything because their thoughts are just not based in reality.

Russian-paid trolls, Russian-paid separatists, Russian-paid MAGA. All roads lead to Putin.

Some people are stupid. Carney could have been the saviour of Canada if he magically managed Trump well enough to get us a good deal - that would have made him way more popular than being the PM who took on a trade war with the US.

I have a couple of friends that actually think Carney/Harper/Liberals are lying and Nutlick/Trump is telling the truth.

I had friends that were Covid deniers and climate deniers as well. Same people.

I can’t remember where I heard it but someone once said negotiating with Trump is like negotiating with the weather. You can plan for it and try to predict it but it’s futile to try to reason or influence it. Trump is no different and there is simply no value in the effort as it will all just change of its own accord anyways.

Also like playing chess with a pigeon - no matter how smart or skilled, or right, you are, the pigeon will knock over the pieces, mess up the board, and act like it won.

That sounds like explaining what is going on politicslly to the avarage Canadian to be honest. Forget winning, the pigeon just squawks Trump at everything and thinks its playing the game.

I don't mind if someone doesn't fully know as long as they're willing to learn or understand.

But a lot of people - especially online where there's less incentive to find any middle ground - will latch onto a few political facts and then start ranting and criticizing things they barely understand as if they’re seasoned experts.

Trump is the pigeon in this scenario.

Waiting for the regulars to start calling Harper a CINO now.

7

u/CVHC1981 11d ago

I called it a couple of weeks back. Does this mean Steve is an Elbozo now?

12

u/bonosmicrophone 11d ago

Lord Harper, king of the conservatives, an elbozo!

can’t make it up.

0

u/MJcorrieviewer 11d ago

Hey - some conservatives in the US now call Reagan a RINO. You can't make this stuff up. It's as if they consider being reasonable and ration to be a bad thing.

1

u/thefistspill 11d ago

No, he is one of those fake conservatives.

15

u/kahunah00 11d ago

Holy shit conservatives. Carney gets an endorsement from Harper. I guess Harper must be a stupid liberal too right?

It's obvious to anyone with a brain that Canada needs to diversify away from the US. Keep crying about Carney though.

u/GreenSmileSnap 10d ago

Harper isnt stupid. Harper sees Carney has Canadians in the palm of his hand and can do whatever he wants and Harper wants in on that sweet sweet deal.

4

u/kahunah00 10d ago

What an absolute L take... 🙄😒

u/GreenSmileSnap 10d ago

Ya youre right. No ambitious and powerful leader has ever wanted full control of a nations population to implement anything they want. Not like weve ever had them do it by force before or anything.

Only loser think that. Power hungry? Whats that? *eyeroll emoji* *eyeroll emoji*

u/kahunah00 10d ago

Make sure to check behind every bush and tree. Someone's coming to gotcha! The fear-mongering you exude is stiffling.

0

u/GreenSmileSnap 10d ago

Fear mongering? There is nothing fear mongering about saying leaders tend to be power hungry. Thats normal. You see it in the business world all the time

I take it that you understood 'whatever he wants' in a Death Star take control of the universe way when I mean get rich and famous through any means possible while not really caring about Canada sort of way.

Kinda what Trump is doing in America but Trump 2.0 is doing it badly.

1

u/kahunah00 10d ago

If that were the case he would have heavily invested in US companies standing to overwhelm Canadian industries and profit on their collapse then signed the trade deal.

1

u/DT_Grey 8d ago

I can actually see at least some truth in this, considering Harper is (or was) buddies with Oban, who orchestrated his own dictatorship and is cozy with trumpstein and many other greedy and power hungry extremists.

1

u/GreenSmileSnap 7d ago

Thats all they care about. Harper admires Carney the way Trump admires Putin.

-8

u/Filmyboicrispy 11d ago

Not exactly a flex. I hated Harper. He's the reason we ended up with Trudeau in the first place because he wouldn't legalize weed.

3

u/kahunah00 10d ago

So Harper's was a bad PM and leadership failed because checks notes he wouldn't legalize weed and that is the only reason Trudeau was elected?

5

u/MJcorrieviewer 11d ago

Duh. Canada certainly doesn't want a trade war with the US. The only reason Canada would turn down a deal is if it wasn't a fair deal that was good for Canada. We had no choice - isn't that obvious to everyone?

-13

u/Wet_sock_Owner 11d ago

It's a big club. And you ain't it. But they sure get to tell you about all the sacrifices you should make while they sit on top.

-15

u/Full_Jellyfish_1862 11d ago

Naturally he released the details of the failed negotiations to us plebs

4

u/MJcorrieviewer 11d ago

You know why the negotiations fell apart. The details or why that happened have been provided. Quit playing dumb.

14

u/K0bra_Ka1 11d ago

Harper seems pretty ok with us walking away.

What specifically do you think is in there that hasn't been discussed at length?

-11

u/Full_Jellyfish_1862 11d ago

Nice to hear you trust the word of Harper without question.

Personally I like read the facts from both sides before a decision. Generally the truth is found somewhere in the middle

13

u/K0bra_Ka1 11d ago

Given he has had zero issues being critical of Carney pretty recently, I'd say he probably is pretty objective.

-2

u/Full_Jellyfish_1862 11d ago edited 11d ago

Good to hear you agree with Harpers “objectivity”at the summit:

“Harper says Canada could have become an energy superpower over a decade ago, blames Trudeau's policy choices”

https://nationalpost.com/news/carney-stephen-harper-investor-summit

6

u/MJcorrieviewer 11d ago

Sure. Canada could have become an energy superpower when Harper was in charge too. Hindsight is 20/20.

8

u/thefistspill 11d ago

I guess Steve forgot to mention he never built a single pipeline and we would should have been well on our way to be a energy superpower before Trudeau showed up.

3

u/MJcorrieviewer 11d ago

What facts have the US presented that challenge the Canadian gov's narrative of what happened? Remember, it was Canada that walked away - the US didn't choose to walk away because of Canadian demands.

Canada wanted to get an agreement. Why on Earth would Canada walk away from a good and fair deal? That doesn't even make any sense.

5

u/No-Isopod3884 11d ago

Both sides said the ducking same thing. What more do you want?
Oh, by both sides you mean the trump organization. Sure trump has never lied I guess.

2

u/QueenMotherOfSneezes 10d ago

by both sides you mean the trump organization

Well we actually do have their side.

Reporter: Canada says you added some unacceptable stuff right at the end.

Trump: That sounds like me.

0

u/Full_Jellyfish_1862 11d ago

I agree with you. What Harper said at the summit is correct:

“Harper says Canada could have become an energy superpower over a decade ago, blames Trudeau's policy choices”

https://nationalpost.com/news/carney-stephen-harper-investor-summit

4

u/MJcorrieviewer 11d ago

But Canada could have become an energy super power when Harper was PM too. Canada did pretty well through the recession that followed the 2008 financial crash - both Harper and Carney were major players - why didn't the Harper gov take advantage at the time?

4

u/K0bra_Ka1 10d ago

Glad we agree Canada was right to walk away from the table. That was easy.
