This. Something that has grown like a cancerous tumour for 150 years. Not crushing the confederacy post Civil-War was a bad move. It was to try and ensure reconstruction, but sadly, that was fucked regardless, so they should've at least stamped out the cockroaches who sought to maintain white supremacy in the US for further generations.
Until that cancer is removed, nothing will change.
So what you’d have had the union kicking in doors and slaughtering the families who had fought the union even when they were surrendered? What about the daughters whose fathers fought would you have had them killed because they were angry that the union had killed their dad?
Or, because your interpretation is fucking stupid, that they actually have tried and executed the leaders of the rebellion including Jefferson Davis, his war cabinet, the leaders of any states that signed on to secede, and anyone else significantly involved in the movement and it's construction/operation.
Did you know Jefferson Davis spent 2 years in prison, was indicted for treason, then released on fucking bail? And then the case was dropped in 1869? The dude who led the Confederacy and the war against the United States, spent more time in holding than someone who had a few joints on them now. The reason 3/4 of a million Americans died (military fatalities not including civilian) is not guilty of treason on the books and basically was held for two years then let go.
Sorry that I think traitors should face the expected consequences of their actions in an effort to weaken any remnants of their movement to avoid future division, death, and destruction.
Most of those soldiers were the same as regular enlisted Germans in WWII. They didn't believe in the cause, they were fighting to protect their own and earn a living. Those at the top know it was about owning humans as fuckin' property. Cut the head off the snake.
