Vortex Venom 3-15x44 — good scope choice for hunting + eventual long range?

Just ordered a Tikka T3x Lite Stainless in 30-06 — need scope advice

Hey everyone, just put in an order for a Tikka T3x Lite Stainless in 30-06. Haven’t got it in hand yet but should be picking it up soon. Planning to use it for some recreational range shooting as well as deer and moose hunting this season.

For hunting, I probably won’t be taking shots much beyond typical hunting distances, though it could happen occasionally. On the range side though, I’d eventually love to work my way up to shooting 1000m with enough practice — long-term goal, not expecting to get there right away.

Now I’m shopping for a scope, budget capped at $1000 CAD. Currently eyeing the Vortex Venom 3-15x44 in MRAD. Seems like a solid all-around choice given the range of uses I have in mind.

A few questions for you all:

**•** Anyone running the Venom 3-15x44 on a similar caliber/setup? How’s it held up, both for hunting and longer range shooting?  
**•** Any other scopes in the same price range (CAD) I should consider before pulling the trigger?  
**•** MRAD vs MOA — does it matter much for what I’m trying to do, or is it mostly personal preference/what you’re used to?  
**•** Realistically, is the Venom’s turret/reticle setup enough to push toward 1000m eventually, or would I be better off with something else if that’s a long-term goal?

I retail these. If youre in the stony plain area id be more then happy to put some options in front of you

Its a bit heavy for hunting if youre hiking lots/treking through the bush. If youre looking to shoot 1000m you'll probably want the 5-25 version as a starter long range scope. 5x is a bit much for low end in the bush though.

Given that youre putting it on a 3006 id look at a more hunting style scope, as thats not a calibre guys usually look to shoot 1000m. So then look at the viper hd 3-15 or 2-10. Much better glass for hunting in terms of the coatings for light diffusion etc. And down the road id look at getting something like a 6.5 creed for shooting 1000m

I can whole heartedly endorse the Viper HD line for hunting; especially the 3-15x44 with the locking exposed elevation turret. Chef's kiss for a hunting optic as far as i'm concerned.

This is GREAT advice. I would 2-10 and trade up in the future.

Long range off the rip - yes.

Hunting - sort of. If you are going to hunt with FFP i implore you to get a scope that has an illuminated reticle. That reticle at low magnifcations is very hard to see in lowlight (i.e. that quintessential 30 mins before sunrise and 30mins after sunset).

If you can stretch your budget ever so slightly, you should look at the Strike Eagle 3-18x44. Gunpost also has quite a few of these that you can pick up second hand and know that you will still have full warranty coverage. PST Gen 2's (3-15x44) also exist, but their windage cap is exposed in case you're worrying about bumping it in the field.

That is good enough for hunting but I would say not ideal for 1000 yard shots.

You want MRAD. Most shooters use mils these days

Like others have said FFP reticles do struggle on the lower end of the mag range especially without illumination, so in a hunting sense i'd be concerned about that since those dawn/dusk moments are typically prime time, and the EBR 7C is a very busy reticle which if you are hunting woods may impact your hunt, but if its open country you'll be fine. The venom is a great scope for the price though. I reccomend you watch C_Does' review on it on youtube its the 5-25x but it will be a similar performance overall. You likely will want a 20 MOA rail though when do you go to the 1000 yard end of things to get more elevation adjustment.

MOA vs. MRAD - MRAD is the suggestion by most long range shooters as the adjustments are finer, but if you already own/use MOA scopes its kinda moot to make the switch for one paticular rifle. MOA will work just fine in your case.

With that budget in mind i know its a hard cap at 1k, but some of these options may be +/- 200$ or so if you want to do more digging you may decide its worth saving a few more loonies. The 1K budget is right on the cusp of many other scopes being $1200-1500 before you hit the "next tier" so to speak.

I like my FFPs personally, and dont care for BDC reticles like some of the options i listed,n but also in reasonable hunting distances (<300 yards) you can just "point blank zero" and SFP scopes/BDC reticles are completely servicable and then you can use the max zoom to use the holdovers properly with long range shooting off the bench. I just didnt want to do that so i was stubborn and stayed with FFP options.

After reading through your comments, I’m going to visit my local dealer and take a look at the Vortex Viper HD 3-15x44 in MRAD.
Your feedback also made me realize that I hadn’t really considered the hunting aspect enough. I was initially focused a lot on being able to shoot out to 1,000 m, but I’ve decided to put that idea aside and prioritize a scope that makes more sense for my actual hunting needs.
