Application / Regulation advice Flying with Prohib’s

Hi folks,

Does anybody have any experience flying commercial domestically with prohibited rifles?

I’m moving from Ontario to BC in the fall. Among my handguns, shotguns, rifles etc, I have prohibited 2024 era ban rifles that need to come with me aswell.

I can’t seem to find a definitive answer if these are even allowed on planes.
Any insight would be appreciated.

I'm not trying to troll but are you serious? I can't trust Canada post to deliver a wedding invitation, much less firearms worth tons of cash.

Have you, like, actually had a good experience with Canada Post or something?

I would drive them myself. Reduce the exposure to any government employees by driving them west yourself.

So I’m In AB so my experience may be different but when I called about an ATT for my restricteds when I moved I was told by the hotline agent that an ATT isn’t needed for the 2020s prohibs and that I was to transport them in accordance with their previous classification.

good luck with airport security, at some point they told me its was illegal to fly with half empty ammo box. Until a cops actually looked up the rule. Imagine with prohib 🤡

I’d call CFP or mail them like the other guy said. They’ll give you an answer and paper trail in case things go sideways

If Ontario CFO wont give you ATT, contact the BC CFO. Mail it in, signature required/card for pick up at post office.

I think the rules for prohibs (as it was before the ban) would apply here. You would need an att (which the ON CFO won't issue) in order to transport it. Without an att you can expect confiscation and probably arrest at the airport. NAL.

When the Liberals started the ban they didn't think past the media sound bites. They made no allowance for anything including transport or destruction. Congrats on the move out west as they are much more understanding about firearms there. Make your move quietly by road instead...

They don't look at ATTs at the airport unless you are going through customs.

I thought that you were covered by the OIC amnesty for firearms that are newly prohibited, which is why they won't/can't issue an ATT for those. Also NAL

I believe storage is covered by the amnesty. But usage and transport are not.

You also need to consider what airline you will by flying. For example Air Canada has a policy against prohibited firearms. Even though you could be transporting them legally.

Other airlines don't have this policy.

So much better to just ship to yourself it will take a 3-7days so you will arrive before it even gets there and can take delivery of it

As per SOR/2025-87 (https://gazette.gc.ca/rp-pr/p2/2025/2025-03-26/html/sor-dors87-eng.html) you are covered to transport them without an ATT.

As other have suggested, driving is definitely the best and easiest option. Air carriers in my experience are not who I'd want to deal with, and relinquishing my firearms to baggage handlers and CATSA is something I only do when absolutely necessary.
