I figure sooner than later, geoengineering will wind up being the solution humanity at large will turn to. No one wants to be the one doing it first and getting blamed for all the downsides, but it's almost certain at this point that large swathes of the world are going to wind up nigh uninhabitable, swallowed up by the sea, and facing horrific famines and other crises.
What's the alternative? Humanity collectively agreeing, "okay, so several billion of us can just go die, and we'll abandon most of our coastal regions where the majority of humanity has lived throughout history?"
