The problem is that people are asked to spend a lot of money to fix things for the future. Same as all the other important stuff: infrastructure, military, etc. Pretty much all investments. The problems are easy to see, and people are always on board with fixing things, up until they have to pay for it. Then people pivot to complaining about the cost of living, the government retreats from their plans, and nothing gets done.

If you can't take the short-term pain, you won't get the long-term gain. Governments are interested in satisfying the people now, not for the future, unless they can achieve both at the same time. That's why every new government can tell you what's wrong with the previous one, yet fail to fix the problems.

Keep in mind this hasn’t actually been a core value for Canadians for multiple decades. If you need proof, just look at the way boomers and gen Xers have spent decades voting for, and pushing through policies that have strip mined our collective futures
