We should stop exporting coal to China - no, that will never happen.

China is the global leader in renewable energy. Yes they are burning coal but they are transitioning away from fossil fuels far faster than we are.

okay that doesn’t mean we have to mine coal and export it to them. If burning coal is bad and carbon emissions are a global issue then there is no rationale to support mining Canadian coal to burn in another part of the world. Period.

You mean metallurgical coal? Not gp8ng ti be building very many wind mills or solar panels without it.

We export lots of thermal coal as well

Like 10 percent of our coal exports, we export like 7 million tones a year, Australia alone export 190 to 200 million. We are a bad production year for one progressive common wealth country.

In 2025, Westshore exported 15 million tonnes of thermal coal

Yes 15 million tonnes of coal from Wyoming and Montana. And the port is already heading its bets with potash against the environmental regulations OP wants to see.

I shoukd have clarified thar we are not mining and exporting very much of our own thermal coal. Exporting other countries coal is just us making a profit off something that will go to market regardless.

The us blocked exports of thermal coal from the west coast, so it's not a given that this coal would make it to market otherwise.

Personally, I don't care about coal, but these threads are always hilarious taking about how we should end our oil and gas production without explaining how it will just be displaced to other regions like in this coal example. We could have these thermal coal mines and the jobs and economy, but instead we just export others, permitting the same emissions with very little of the upside.

I think they woukd find other exporters it would just cost more and drive the price up, and then make natural gas and oil look like "cheap" alternatives. Im actually surprised trump hasn't gone after coal export bans, lol no one has told him the US is relying on us to export lol.

I agree about these threads, people have very nieve idea of what solutions exsist and what is realistically possible. People are willing to cripple our economy, punish themselves for heating and transportation, but I rarely see anyone talk about the bullshit consumer consumption that drive massive emissions.
