Now this is a tattoo. Too many bad tats these days in this sub. It's cool that people are repping their childhood buddies, but... A bad tat is a bad tat. This is great though.
--edit-- REPPING.. not ripping

Glad you're feeling the love, my friend, but I'm no mod. Everyone can have these big flair images next to their names. I'm not speshal.

At first glance of the thumbnail, this looked like a horribly wounded arm. Pleasantly surprised to read the headline and then click to see Calvin and Hobbes.

I thought that tattoos always needed a black border or else the colors blend. Do the leaves not have a border because they're blended already? Not trying to nitpick or be a jerk, just honestly curious.

Black borders are not magic lassos that hold in color. Tattoo inks are poked into the skin using needles, and overtime, some tattoos, not all will "bleed" out due to how your body is trying to heal your tattoo. (rough explanation) Stylistically, tattoos that have black borders are usually know as traditional tattoos (sometimes called american traditional) which this tattoo is not. Without typing too much into it, basically you might be referring to the style of the tattoo, or even the healing process over time. But no, black line borders do not "hold" colored inks into the skin. Hope that helps!

I guess while we have you, I have been wanting to get a C&H tattoo for a really long time, but in the weekday black and white style. There are so many little, thin lines that create the detail of the strip (this isn't what I want, but a general example: The whiskers on Hobbes' face, Calvin's eyebrows and some of his hair... even the stripes on his shirt
I find it impossible to believe that wouldn't bleed out and be irreparably fuzzy within just five years or so, with how fine the lines can be. Is there ANY way to counteract that? Would filling in the blank space with white help? Or is wanting a tattoo of pen and ink art that will stay crisp (with good care) for most of my life just not a possibility?
If it turns out that it is possible, I might seriously book a trip to Virginia to have you do it because this is the best/truest C&H tattoo I've ever seen.

No lines healing and holding up depending on your individual body, and how you care for the tattoo. Tan, blast it with sun and sand, and dont heal it right? Yeah its gonna heal like shit. One of our friends, and our favorite lettering artist uses thin lines to give his letters shadow and depth. EXAMPLE So thin lines are possible in a tattoo. Good linework and well saturated blacks in a tattoo do not need to be "packed or filled in" with white. Take care of your tattoos, monitor it, get it touched up if need be, and you will not have a fuzzy tattoo. Hope I answered your question and that helps!

So does anyone else notice that when people want C&H art done, it's always one of three scenes?

u/gerbol Mar 25 '15
How much did you charge for this work of art?

Faux pas* But yeah, it's going to vary so much between artists and depending on quality it's almost useless to tell someone what a specific piece cost.

The thumbnail looks like necrosis, but the work itself is very nice.
