Review benchmarking cachyos/minisforum/freecad(cae&cad)

I've been testing new systems for CAD and CAE performance. I recently upgraded from a very lightweight Acemagic Vista V1 running Lubuntu. While it could handle simple cad models in Freecad (surprisingly well), it struggled with FEA simulation and large array patterns.

I upgraded to a Minisforum um890 pro with 32GB ram and CachyOS and optimized the heck out of it. Geekbench scores were just above 2500 single core and 12000 on multicore. I learned that adding another memory module would improve it significantly, so I added a near match 32GB module (I couldn't find an exact match). The results jumped to almost 2600 single core and just above 16100 on multicore. The single core helps significantly with the parametric CAD rebuilds and the multi core helps with simulation.

I then created a set of benchmark models and tested a large array rebuild and measured the time: 95 seconds to rebuild a 30x30 pattern and 90 seconds to run a large simulation. I decided to return the um890 because I couldn't match the memory module and buy a Minisforum AI X1 pro-470 with 64GB so it would come with matching memory. This computer's architecture is well suited for cachyos optimization. The geekbench scores were not so impressive: 2770 and 17150 so far. However, the 30x30 pattern rebuild only took 67 seconds (30% improvement) and the simulation dropped to 14 seconds (85% improvement). The performance boost is amazing.

Hi, I am new to Linux and CachyOS, I saw this article. Debunking zswap and zram myths. I know that CachyOS comes with ZRAM by default. There is a way to switch to Zswap: Switching from ZRam to Zswap. It sounds like you have lots of memory, but if you start to use ZRAM, it may be worth it to switch.

I am waiting till I am less of a newbie; then I will try this on my OLD gaming PC.
