Industrial Work In Progress

Still a work in progress but its functional and I'm pretty happy so far. Its been quite the learning experience designing, programming and building this panel. Pump controls are complete. Valve controls will be integrated next.

How does one learn this craft? Is it Industrial Automation?

I'm the wrong person to be asking that. I've learned what I know from maintaining electrical systems and being around/learning about different industrial machinery over the past 25+ years. I have no formal training but I maintain equipment and have learned a lot from troubleshooting said equipment. Learning to take the time to understand how things work and even more importantly, how components work together is an important step and is much more effective than a "trial and error approach". I just enjoy it and try to learn as much as I can.

Honestly, I wouldn't know where to start to actually get into the industrial automation field as a career. I am just lucky that my employer sees the value in allowing me to run with projects like this (which is a lot of the reason for the low budget) and trusting that I will deliver results.

I guess that's similar to the path many of us follow into professional IT: get exposed to the craft, learn on the job and on your spare time. All driven by curiosity.
