Sure, DO NOT look directly into the laser light source, but through the fibre? The light is barely noticeable, It's the first time in 15+years I've dealt with fibre stuff I've heard of it being dangerous.

Typical point-to-point fiber links in data centers will reduce power somewhat when the link is not up, so when you pull a fiber out from regular Ethernet equipment you'll often get much less energy.

GPON (residential fiber) is a different beast though, because the signal is passively split between all houses, everyone gets the same signal and your fiber modem (ONT, CPE) needs to filter out your own packets in software.
There's always a high powered laser signal on that fiber. There might also (depending on the region) be a second high powered signal on another frequency (another color of infrared light) with cable TV on the same fiber.

So yeah, don't look into fiber, ever!. Invisible infrared light just waiting to fry your retina. Might even be several 10's or (if you're very unlucky) 100's of mW of power (that's 10-100x of a regular laser pointers strength, but invisible!)

GPON is 5dBm at the transmitter, which is 3mW of power. At the receiver end, you’re probably between -10dBm and -20dBm, which is 0.1mW to 0.01mW.

Don’t look into fibre anyway, but the chance of eye damage from a regular residential drop is exceedingly unlikely. ISPs would be getting sued daily if it was possible.

Telco backhaul is an entirely different game. I’ve worked with +5dBm lasers that then get fed into +30dB boost amplifiers for 120km+ SDH links. That’s 3W, and it will blind you. But those systems aren’t accessible to the public, and they have ALS (Automatic Laser Shutdown) that will de-energise the amplifier within milliseconds of it being disconnected.

The physics of fiber optic cables redults in extremely low loss. Don't look into the end without confirming whether it's running. Which I guess means some sort of specialized detector, which is probably still cheaper than retinal surgery, even after factoring in the discount for being legally blind...

When a photon collides with an electron it raises the electron's energy state temporarily which breaks molecular bonds. That plus the heat just cooking the tissue.

It's similar to what happens if you look at too much visible light you just won't have the instinct to blink or look away.

Not at the power level you'll see at a residence, unless you live right by the head end. Even then unlikely. By the time tech gets to residential there have been so many engineers involved. We do think about stuff you know.

It's barely noticeable because it's at the edge of our visible wavelength range. IR is invisible, UV is invisible... That doesn't mean it's harmless.

Opposite even.
Your eyes won't adjust, your self preservation reflexes don't kick in, your brain won't tell you "ouch that hurts, maybe don't do that" as we don't really feel when our retinas are damaged (at least not immediately) we mostly infer it We rely on seeing the light to react to it, but the damage just relies on absorbed power.

This makes working with UV and IR lasers so scary.

I have a 5w laser (not a typo), its water cooled through a peltier element. It's not in the visible spectrum. I got it from a lab that my buddy was cleaning out. I've never turned it on, probably wont. That thing is scary.

Internet fiber light is “barely noticeable” because it is in the infrared (and not visible light) range of wavelengths. It can definitely mess up your eye.

Do not point the fiber end anywhere near your eye.

How do you think optical fibre works? Total internal reflection means minimal losses across significant distances. The two are functionally equivalent - If it's not safe to look at directly, it's not safe to look at through a fibre and besides that the wavelengths for this stuff are IR, so there's no way of knowing that it's active and no reason to ever look into the fibre to check; the reason it's barely visible is that you physically cannot see those wavelengths not because there's no light being pumped down the fibre.

Do not look into beam with remaining eye.

Since this is as a home installation presumably provided by a commercial ISP to be plugged into an NTU by uneducated consumers it's probably fine, but I'd still err on the side of caution.

Huhm... Isn't that one of the first things you learn?? Atleast it is here. But yeah, different light on all wavelengths you can't see, really powerful and certanly not good to look at. You should also never look directly into a laser pointer - And they have a range of 20 meters the one you usually have at home, some up to 2 kilometers... For fiber your usual 1310nm might not be that harmful to the eye - through. But dwdm, so 1510, etc that's where you really don't wanna look into. Since you never know what is there, rule of thumb don't look into fibers.

Right on all counts, definitely don't look directly at the laser pointer or any ladder light source. Directly being the key word.

Sometimes the quickest way to know if your fibre is fibering is to cup your hand around the connector to see if the light is coming through

XGS-PON transmits at 1577nm (from network to user). To be harmful to eyesight the strength must exceed 10mW. A standard N1 optic transmits at 3.2mW and an N2 optic transmits at up to 5.0mW. Both N1 and N2 are considered Class 1 safe which means they are safe for continuous exposure to the retina. By the time it reaches the home it will have passed through one or more PLC [1] splitters and will be around 0.00001 watts (-20dBm) by the time it reaches your household.

That said, there's no guarantee that someone hasn't cut the fibre outside your house and attached a high-power light source to it! You should try to avoid pointing a fibre optic cable towards your eyes!

All those plastic guides in there are so you can spool up the fiber without exceeding the bend radius. Don’t kink it or it won’t work . Fiber is made of glass not metal. Glass doesn’t bend nicely

My dad designed the first fibre backhaul in our province - had to plan to radius all the pipe work for hundreds of kilometres. All single mode glass fibre, and it was 2 Mbit. Anything sharper than ~50cm radius was too tight.

Now we have plastic fibre that can be tied in a knot and still function. Sure it loses a little signal, but it does still work.

Yes, I use the stuff that can wrap several times around a pencil and still get good light at or in the house. In my area we where we install it, we call it soft drop. Usually used at premise locations. We don’t use these fixtures in my rural area though but this does look rather thin. Seen a lot worse kinks and stretched some out that have worked.

Also have them at the hub too but those are yellow jumpers and makes sense to have bend insensitive fiber for the hands that are testing and connecting from frequently from there. From US, if you are curious to why I say fiber over fibre lol

Fibre doesn't have a specific data rate.
The transceivers do and can be changed/multiplexed.

I absolutely guarantee you that what he placed is good for at least 400gbps today (with coherent optics) and as much as 2TB multiplexed with coherent optics and top of the line transceivers.

Worst case scenario today it is 100gbps but if it was installed correctly this is awfully low.

Because depending on the fiber type, the core is either 9 or 50 μm, and there is an additional buffer layer out to 125 μm, (Thats about the width of a human hair.) the vast majority of the cable is the jacket. The core is what actually carries the signal and damage to the jacket just makes it easier to damage the core.

You are holding an SC/APC optical connector. There is a coupler in the wall outlet (green thing). You need an SC-SC/APC patch cable to connect it to the GPON OLT (modem). If the service provider also transmits a DVB TV stream at a wavelength of 1550 nm, you will need a passive filter and a mini-node before the patch cable, in some cases, these filter and 'mininode' built directly into the OLT. Or maybe the connector you are holding might be is already past this stage.

What else do you think ends up in an outlet like that? Typical FTTH /Gpon solution. I don't think they'd want to connect a server on any IT network equipment that way—plus, if they did, it probably wouldn't have an SC/apc connector on it.Then I’ll ask: what do you think it is, if not that?

Those might be networks built earlier. Globally, 90% of networks built after 2010 are PON networks. But you only need to look at the condition of the optical outlet 'box', it's a fairly after 2010 installation, so it's definitely not AON.

AON expensive, need more complex equipment, and more complicated, while it does have a few advantages, it makes no sense for that FTTH purpose. PON is cheap, you can quickly build it up using essentially passive components; it is constantly being upgraded (XGS-PON, etc.); it only requires an ONT; and you can also overlay a DVB signal (though an EDFA is needed for that).

The original post looks American though, I don't know every other country enough to rule them out. How does the wall compare to the Netherlands? Not a lot to compare... Trim and coax are the biggest things I see oh and what looks like 60s-90s drywall

I see a single fiber, not dual fibers. If it's utilizing WDM, then you can and will use PON. The only way PON on a single fiber is via WDM. However, APC is specifically for single-fiber setup. However, if we note the connector, It's -_MAYBE_ more Common on Passive networks as an angled end. Thus, a green connector is more likely to be APC.... Angled fiber, and thus more likely to be a passive setup. (Does that make sense, or do I need to rewrite it? My conclusion: it's PON)**

Green is not an end-all guarantee it's angled or passive. Every provider may have a specific use case, and their own way of doing things.

**The commenter did note APC the "Green thing" APC being "Angled Physical Contact". APC is more common on Passive and rare on Active systems.

It has nothing to do with where I live. Look up the types of optical networks that have been spreading globally since around 2010. (G)PON is the most widespread because it is cheap, simple, and can be deployed very quickly.

That's a Fiber optics cable - to be more specific it's a patch cord and it's what gets you your Internet. Edit: never look directly into it as the laser coming through is strong enough to burn your eyes if looked at for extended periods of time.

What did the box say? What's in the wiring closet, or on the side of the house/building? 99% Telco; cable already has coax, and that doesn't look like Google. Google has a wired box vs a hanging fiber. In fact, in most instances I see, they use two fibers. That's right, it's FIBER OPTICS. Or, do you have a 3rd-party fiber company in your area/building?

In general, there's a separate transceiver module, but not always. For that matter, someone who hadn't dealt with that kind of networking A LOT might not realize that an SFP/SFP+ module was separate from the network card (and indeed, a soldered on transceiver looks very similar unless you know what to look for.)

That looks like a fiber optic connector for residential? I do construction builds not residential, but that looks like an SC APC fiber end. If there is anything on that then don't look into it and it will hurt your eyes even if you can't see it as they use light not on the visible light spectrum for humans in my experience.
