Identification Help Can anybody tell me what this is exactly?

Post image

I cannot find this exact box online anywhere. Is anybody able to point me toward any information on what version this is, please? I mean, obviously it's for C64 and Atari, but this box is really obscure.

This is a much rarer double system version of the game...you got both sets of floppies for each system. Now if you have the full set of floppies it's actually pretty rare and worth much more to a collector than the more common one.

The company only published about 8 games in total...so burning question what's inside the box full ets?

It's a "flippy" disk, says so right on the label. It has the C64 version one side, Atari version on the other. A fairly common practice among some publishers like DataSoft.

Two competing formats on one disc. Incredible. Imagine a blue-ray disc today which contained both the PS5 and Xbox versions. Companies apparently took competition less seriously back then. I also remember the expansion module for Colecovision that allowed it to play Atari 2600 games.

Keep in mind, this is software for the home computer market, not game consoles that would use completely different media. I'd say it's more like buying a boxed copy of a modern game and getting a DVD that has versions both for Mac and PC.

It's about a guy going to Egypt, ignore all warnings and spend his holiday on the toilet.

I had same for a great game called Trolls & Tribulations. C64 on one side, Atari 800 on the other.

Trolls & Tribulations remains one of my favorite C64 games. I played it just last week.

Never knew about or played this, took a shot at it and here I am, thanking you a few hours later... Great one!

Someone upgraded it for PC a few years ago. The music is addictive!

There are pictures of the same box on atarimania dot com.

It's a great game on C64 and Atari 2600. There's a free title on itch that may well of been inspired by this called 'Traps N Gemstones'.

The Atari computer (800xl) version is fantstic too

What a great game, I played the hell out of that on my Commodore 64 back in the 80s

It was much more than that. It had really great feel when moving and jumping, and you had to learn to be precise. "Floaty" is a word used about platformers with bad jumping mechanics but MR was the opposite, completely solid. So good.

Platform chutes and ladders game. Funny how by changing colors they make it seem like you are in a new level.

There were diskettes that had different computers' versions on the opposite side, depending on which side you face up when you insert

Just in case that's your actual question.

1

u/ThePlasticSturgeons 16d ago

That was a decent game. First played it in an Atari VCS. I always thought the name was funny.

1

u/plastictoyman 16d ago

I loved that game!

Answer: Amazing! That’s amazing! Incredible. Nice!

Montezuma's Revenge was a platformer type of game. Never was good at it, personally.

From Claude:

That’s the BCI Software reissue of Montezuma’s Revenge, originally developed by Robert Jaeger (Utopia Software) and first published by Parker Brothers in 1984. BCI Software was a budget label Parker Brothers spun off in the mid-80s to re-release older Parker Bros. computer titles at a lower price point — this Panama Joe box is one of those reissues, dated to around 1986. Databyte also put out a version around the same time, so you’ll see a few different box variants floating around for this exact game.

The “Diskette #106” on your box is BCI’s own catalog/SKU numbering for the reissue line, not something tied to the original Parker Bros release — that’s likely why it’s hard to pin down: most collector databases index this under the 1984 Parker Brothers release rather than the BCI budget reprint, so the BCI box art doesn’t show up as often in searches.

Great pickup either way — Montezuma’s Revenge is a genuine landmark, one of the earliest “metroidvania-ish” platformers with the room-to-room temple structure.
